More men and women are getting tattooed. Do they honestly think they look cool? So ugly with big tats over their bodies. One or two small ones are ok, but the body wasn't meant to be a canvas painting. Hahaha.

It's an individual choice, I support others, it is their choice, who am I to judge a person, but for myself it's not really needed, I'm a guy and onlly had a sleeper in my ear, but about 7 years ago, I took it out and left it out, I don't miss it, I just worry it was going to catch on something one day, but I am over having it, I won't put it back in or get another, I will get other tattoos but no piercings, even as a guy, I am not a fan of piercings on certain body parts, like the tongue and private areas, I know why they do it, but I don't see the point, but again I will support the person, but if I was to give only a yes/no answer, I would say no, but not put my foot down, again it's your choice, not mine. I do however like girls with tattoos, especially a great design, i even find it sexy in a way, but it has to be a good design, not random images, like a spider and then a clown and then a arrow and then a set of playing cards etc, just looks out of place, a nice full sleeve is even nice if it is done right, I actually draw the line around the neck, but on the side not your throat, and the face to me looks stupid, the face for me is a big no no.Edited 06-Dec-24 19:47pm

It's an individual's choice and not anyone else's business if a person chooses to have piercings and tattoos so people just need to be mindful of that.We need to look beyond this and accept the person for their personality and love they are offering.Yes I am a tattooed and pierced lady and I'm proud of it!

People can do whatever they want. Its no one's business. I have my ears done but I also have my lip pierced. I have a large tattoo on my arm that I've had for 20 years. I wear a ring in my lip and I've had it pierced for 20 years. I work as a Legal Executive in a law firm. I take my lip ring out if I have a client meeting. I also cover my tattoo.

If this is how someone expresses his or her self, there is probably need for a therapist, as it's obvious attention is the goal.

I think these are all forms of self-expression. Tongue, or anywhere besides the earlobes, for piercings are not for me. I do have 2 tattoos. I have one on my left forearm that says Near to the heart of God, and the second one is an oriole on my right upper arm/shoulder. My Dad used to sit and watch the orioles at his feeders outside his living room window and when he passed away I knew this was my way to honour him. Not only for myself but when people ask me about it, I can tell them it's for my Dad and I remember him again and again. You are correct in that certain piercings and tattoos are offensive and when not the face of a business, the wearer is either told to cover them while on the job or not get the job. The piercings in the tongue just make you talk funny and to me that's not worth what I hear is the real reason for getting one.

Only the piercing of the ears is for me...Personally, I feel that piercing wherever on the body (and tattoos for that matter) are not appealing...

Leaving your body as God intended is the way to go. I dont reckon it's cool to put something in your nose, in your tongue in your nipples your belly button or some parts a bit beyond and so forth. Some of these things are irreversible or require major medical work . So think before you leap and don't get pressured by others. Be you because you is best.

People get a lot of tattoos and piercings in society. Someone can still get a job even if they have many piercings.

Ear piercing and tattooing did have a reason way back when people were slaves. Pirates also had their ears pierced, but I have no idea why. My great granny was a Gypsie who believed that having your ears pierced made your eyesight extra good. She was a funny old lady with long stretched ear lobes, she used some odd words and had an accent like an old English pirate, I think they call it an accent from the west country. Some piercings can be dangerous. One of my cousins had her tongue pierced and ended up in intensive care as she almost died when her tongue became so swollen she couldn't breathe. I don't like pierced noses, tongues, lips or eyebrows, and although I do have one tat I don't like to see tattooed women, or men for that matter. One or 2 tat's is fine and enough while anymore is over the top. It's ugly.

Yes it does. People do judge by appearances. Fact of life! Funny, I haven't seen too many brainy or bright people with tattoos. Mostly it's dickheads and many aren't too bright. Lol

It's very much matter of opinion rather than factual reality. Piercings like tattoos are not automatically 'degrading'. Some people may have the opinion that they are, but others will view them as fine. I'm not a fan of piercings myself. I did have my ears pierced as a teen, but rarely bother to wear earings these days. I don't agree with piercings children's ears at all, but plenty of parents choose to do so. Their problem as far as I'm concerned. I don't care. What other people choose to do is up to them. Having piercings doesn't change who the person is, doesn't negate their skills.qualifications nor personality. I wouldn't choose multiple piercings, but I don't care if others do, and it doesn't entitle me to judge them for their choice. I find spacers unattractive, but again I don't have to wear them. Someone else having them has zero effect on my life. In some workplaces they may be a safety issue, but that is a whole different issue.

People that do tatts and other bodily art are probably the same people that do drugs as well. They are rebellious and some are even criminals. How many jailed criminals have tattoos? That's another reason why many don't respect them. Btw, real ladies don't have tattoos. It makes them look ugly and butch. I don't think most men find it appealing either.

The only tatts that I ever had were the fake stick on one's you could get in your chewing gum, when I was a kid. You can buy temporary tattoos online. No need to go to the expense of expensive and real ones. You won't damage your skin either.

Wow! Some people on here really get worked up about body art on rewardia. Look at the comments of that female called FAIRY, for instance, she kept attacking others because they don't agree with her views. Same as some others on here. Good way to start bullying people I suppose! The only bullies on here today are those who don't like the truth, that rings in your nose and tattoos are ugly. The majority of people don't accept them. When you are really old ladies, you will have wrinkled old tattoos and your nose will droop from that ring you got put into your nose. Yes, it might be common in some old society's or races, but it's only in recent decades that more white people have accepted such ugliness. Don't complain when and if you get a bad infection from your tatts or other bodily derangement then. Have no sympathy for such people. Many who do get tattoos later regret it. Also the health implications can be bad years later.

I don't have any so who am I to comment? Though still I always wondered why I see so many people have more of them these days comparred to when I was younger. Maybe in a way it is a hell of a lot easier, with modern digital technology, compared to hand artists of the past. I may have heard that a reason for body piercing makes the body feel differnt. Like it's normal with out it, feel different with it. It may just all be a scam by the banks like fashion is, they just need more money flowwing. But then do body piercing's make you feel better in some way? Maybe that's why people do nipples and clit. though that is not safe for other reasons, they are removable I suppose.

Why is a piercing okay in an earlobe but not anywhere else?

We have been doing body piercing for centuries. Have a look at any old paintings and books. Mind you some of the modern piercing should have been done with a sword or a bayonet.

It's not my cup of tea but if people want to cover themselves in tattoos and piercings that is their choice. They must realise however, that it could seriously undermine their chances and opportunities in employment, and employers are quite within their rights to avoid employing anyone whose dress standards are unprofessional and not in keeping with company policy, especially when personal presentation is essential in public settings. If the jobs are in places where public presentation is not required, it likely wouldn't matter so much.

I think it is a personal choice to pierce or not. I only have multiple ear piercings. My Grandaughters have nose, eyebrow and lip piercings. They all wear very tasteful jewelry. They also have belly button piercings. Had that been popular in my Hippie days, I could have done that. One must think about work, however, and some companies will not hire or advance to higher positions if they don't think you will represent well.

Not surprised at a lot of the ignorant comments when it comes to other people's choices about their bodies. It's almost as if cultures haven't been doing this for millennia.... Just to clarify as well, having an opinion is alright, it's just how you express it. I personally like piercings and have 3 in each ear. I did it for myself and now I get to wear more jewelry and not have to choose between them all. It's aesthetically pleasing to me. I love looking at people's facial piercings and their artistic expression too. I'm not a fan of stretching ear lobes like in the picture but it others choose to have this done and are happy then I'm happy for them. I don't avoid people because they have piercings and tattoos and I have found a lot of people who have then are kind and generous sorts. On the other side I've known people who don't have any who are nasty, judgmental and abusive. I like people's tattoos as well but won't get any myself as that's not my thing.

Tatoos are a skin specialists nightmare with skin cancers everywhere in this country (Australia) I wonder how many get missed cannot blame the Doctor , it is so difficult for a complete body check with just the normal permutation on the skin, pleased I have an excellent skin Doctor who has already picked up a melanoma which was so tiny there was tattoos in the area it could have been difficult to see.

I live in a conservative community near the bottom of the world (by choice), have been an employer for the last 20+ years and would look seriously at a potential employee with loads of obvious tats and piercings - would not go well in our community and sure it would discourage customers into our business. Could NOT care about what they have that I cannot see, but "in your face" stuff is simply not a goer for me or my business customers - old fashioned I am sure but I pay the wages!!

Hate all face piercings but (some) other piercings are ok. Stretched lobes are hideous. I don't mind belly buttons pierced but there's no need to show them off! I can't stand tattoos on females unless they are small and discreet. It's totally getting out of hand now. I would never hire someone with excessive tattoos and piercings.

I have worked it out how to make money,lots of it. Open a tattoo business and change all sporting people half price. I know most are Pacific Islanders and it’s their culture but seems all are into it. I have seen people with multiple rings etc spread over their heads,faces,eyes,ears so how does a future employer hire them as front line workers.

I'm not against a tattoo or two, if they are done professionally, but not around the neck area or up & down their legs. My husband got his first ever tattoo of his wife's Christian name at 85 years old because he was leaving her for a week's holiday that I did not want to go on. We both have our ears pierced & that's enough for me, but if people want to go the whole way & cover their bodies with tattoo's, then it is up to them. Having tattoos are not cheap, so if they want to waste their money, then it is up to them.

It's nothing new. Piercing, tattoos, body alterations, etc. go way way back to pre-recorded times. You can look at the remote tribal people in places like South America, Africa, Papua New Guinea to see examples of what used to done. For centuries Asian women squashed their feet, European women squeezed their waists not that long ago, etc. Personally getting an essential injection or blood test is bad enough. I would never choose to have a piercing of any sort. As for how someone else looks, it's their choice (although very few bother to think about the consequences of that choice nor what they'll look like when they are 90 years old). I have an intense aversion to needles. It took me 49 years to work up the nerve to get my ears pierced, the first time. I got the second hole in my ears a couple years later because I liked the way it looks. I have 3 daughters that all have multiple piercings ( and tattoos ) in all kinds of places that make me cringe to think about, As parents, we decided that it wasn't worth it to fight about it. They are all adults now, married, with children, it will be interesting to see what kinds of crazy stuff the grandkids will come up with to rebel against their parents!

Some heavier facial piercings and tattoos can be confronting and wouldn't be my thing as I have never been game enough to get more than my ears done a couple of times ,, but it's not going to lessen the wearer's abilities in their field of practice.Simple smaller facial piercings are pretty commonplace and I don't see problems with other tattoos but prefer if they are one piece that makes sense or is readable rather than a whole lot of silly squiggles of badly done artwork they got just for the heck of it ! Body-piercing has been going on since the dawn of time in all races. If people want to do it then, so long as I am not required to do it, thta's OK by me.. However, that being said, the piercing I can't get used to is when people do it to their Tongues where it is always moist, always full of germs and the actual piercing doesn't get the chance to heal. The other body part to which gets pierced and, reportedly, some men attach all sorts of things to is their penis. Why? Each to his own, but what is the point of it? What does it acheive? How is a piercing unprofessional ? It’s the person that’s doing the job. What they look like has no bearing on their skills or capabilities.

My Dad sent me an email heading was `Mum why can't I get a job' and there were heaps of pictures of people with piercings and tattoos. Some were oh okay that's disgusting and I guess it's the shock factor they are seeking. The horns and ball bearings under the skin is like so gross and how on earth are they going to go through an airport? Some tattoos are pretty and I can understand them but no not all of them. Faces of people are well if that's what you want for eternity on your skin. It is definitely an individual thing. Another one that I was grossed out by was the man with a forked tongue. Seriously, that is just way too much. The guy looked like a lizard for goodness sake. A job who would employ him ( A circus maybe.) Personally not for me, but different strokes for different folks. The tattoo that does 'upset' me is the Moko that many young Maori women get that in their true culture they shouldn't have. It is actually denigrating their ancestors who had to Earn the Moko. It was not done just "to tell your life story"

People should be able to express themselves with piercings and tattoos, if they like. Tattoos in particular, are a form of art, expressed on one’s body, and many people tell stories of their life through their tattoos. There are some jobs that maybe there needs to be limitations on what is on display eg some body modifications/ facial implants etc. as sometimes they can look a little unprofessional, but otherwise, I don’t have a problem with tattoos and piercings being on display. I work in healthcare, in a hospital and know lots of professionals with both, and it does not effect their ability to perform their jobs. My Dad did not want holes in his daughters’ ears. There were 4 of us. So in my teens, I went to a jeweller who pierced my ears using a piercing gun. My dad said he would not drive me to the hospital if my ears got infected. I remember cleaning the holes a lot and praying they would heal quickly. I won that one with my Dad and the next battle with him was getting my driver’s license. But that is a story for another time. Sorry Dad! Body piercing is not for me but yes perhaps for others!

There is no skill or discipline or study needed to deface your body in order to get attention. That is why they do it...laziness. Social media has dumbed users down to the level where being an object of ridcule is preferable to not getting 'likes'. Some times people use piercing and tattooing as an extention of their personality. In my last position there were more people with coloured hair, piercings and tattoos than without and it wasn't frowned upon even though the Company is locations all around the world If you do you do if you don't you don't. It's really up to each individual how they want to express themselves and if they can afford it then go for it. As for applying for positions I know there are certain looks that are being looked for

Like fashion I feel tattoos and piercing is a form of self expression and an extension of a person's personality. It's not everyone's cup of tea,but it's more accepted now than when I was young. I know people from all walks of life( doctors,solicitors, shop assistants etc) that have either or both. It doesn't make them less in my eyes,if anything more. And I love to hear about their experiences,why,how they came about getting them. One friend I will mention had his first tattoo at 67. It was to mark the birth and loss of his first grandchild( stillborn) It's not in an obvious place,and you wouldn't know he had it unless he showed you. He is a master builder and all around nice guy.

Basically you do what you want with your body and respectfully. allow everyone else the same luxury

The one that takes the cake for me is the ring thru their nose, reminds me of pigs. That and face studs just revolting.

I'm all for beauty but not for disfigurement some of these piercing require medical intervention to correct for change of mind .Loads of infections in many areas that have been pieced. Seen a lot of blood poisoning just from ear and naval piercings ,Happy with the 8 holes that I was born with .Companies have an imagine that is created by the company and its reputation so they will hire the people that best represents this . At the end of the day, like many that have already said it on here. To each their own. While I could discuss about the turn off I personally have, the bigger discussion should be for those that pursue these body piercings that they still feel welcome for their line of work or are still able to find success in life, without having to deal with the backlash or discrimination for their choices.

Unfortunately it's because they don't like themselves or whats happening to them. Ears pierced is one thing, nose, eyebrows and lips are something else. It's the same with tattoo's. It's not until they enter their middle age that they understand what they have done and why. Then they are not sure they want to talk about it.

I had my ears pierced many years ago and wear small diamond earrings. Some of the piercings look horrible. But it is their body and their life and as long as they are happy that is the main thing.

I have 11 piercings in my ears, 1 in my belly button & a few tattoos. My mother actually took me to get my belly button done since I was only 17 & I went with her to get her second piercing in her ears. I'm not a fan of some facial piercings or over gauged ears, but a small stud in the nose or ring in the eyebrow is fine. I think if you're qualified to do the job, it shouldn't matter what kind of piercings you have. If you're the face of a company, the employer should make it clear in the dress code policy. Don't judge a book by its cover.
