Dark tourism
Rebekah 140398203-Jan-24
Do you think dark tourism is immoral or moral in your country's social norms? A dark tourist would be somebody that is from a country that shooting a gun is illegal. So they travel and go shoot a gun in a different country. A dark tourist destination would be a body farm. Last would be travelling to nuclear blast zones, towns that were evacuated during the bomb, and they never returned because of the high levels of radiation. In your comment, please state the country in which you reside and what form of dark tourism you think is moral or not. If you have parents that live in a different country, compare the two from which where you live and where your parent. Are those dark tourist destinations okay in one country and not okay in the other?

I have read where hunters go to places here on earth to hunt wild game.To each his own as long as it's legal. From United States Of America.

I’m not into hunting at all, but my husband is. He’s an excellent shot, but hasn’t gone out shooting in over 15 years. All were feral pests that the landowner of the property gave him and his mates permission to shoot. I find the whole idea gross and disgusting and can’t understand why you’d want to hunt animals for sport, but get that that’s what some people do. I don’t have an issue with feral pests getting shot, but the people that hunt the big game in Africa- yeah nah…I have a massive issue with that…especially the ones that are hand raised and are endangered. And then they have the nerve to post the photos of themselves proudly posing with the carcass as a trophy. Nope…completely immoral and wrong. We have an issue with feral pigs, rabbit and hares and other pests here in Australia that wipe out our crops and do enormous damage to our ecosystem and wildlife habitats. I guess it is what you were brought up with really. My family weren’t hunters or into that, so I’m not.

Dark tourism is not big game hunting folks. Personally, I think it is really interesting. Going to places where tragic events have occurred in nothing new. Sometimes people need to see to try to make sense of it all. Sometimes people may want to pay their respects in their own way. I do have an issue with disrespect though. People taking photos, and worse still, posting them on social media, of dead bodies from the suicide forest in Japan for example.

Is this a bit like ‘men’ with lots of money going and shooting animals that have been hand raised…. Must make you feel very masculine…. !!! Anyone asking this sort of question needs mental health in my opinion.. Australia..

What a neat idea...i suppose as long as u r not hurting anyone or any animals then all good. Here in NZ we only allow legal things, moral things are up to you but i don't think people are pouring in to enjoy our prostitution reforms, liberal gender rights and late/term abortions.

I think dark tourism is very odd. A couple of years ago a ship load of people went to look at a volcano in New Zealand and many died. I can't imagine why anyone would want to look at a volcano, or a deserted Chernobyl for that matter. In Australia hunting is a big thing, and it's called sport. How can killing a magnificent bird, a tatty kangaroo or a poor brumby be a sport? The animals don't have a fighting chance. But then I don't like horse racing or boxing either. I think a "sport" is something where all opponents are equal with the same chance of winning. I'm no adrenalin junkie and don't understand it. My idea of tourism is to visit a garden or property with beautiful flora. Bowral at Tulip Time or Canberra for Floriade. That's enjoying the wonderful and beautiful natural environment.

It's completely immoral. I live in Australia and am totally disgusted by what people do to our wildlife. Shooting kangaroos and ducks and inflicting so much pain and suffering. We truly have enough horrible people in our country that just care about themselves. Why should we let these psychopathic morons in to do even more damage?

The Minns Government in NSW is pushing shooting brumbies from helicopters. How barbaric is that?

I do not agree with it of course. These animals are beautiful but introduced and are destroying the natural ecology of the high country. It's a no win situation. Due to the crops we plant and the dams we built we have more Kangaroos than ever was in this country. Culling is a necessity apparently. I have never agreed with shooting ducks. That is just ugly. How do they have a chance against a shotgun blast. I have never gone hunting and neither have my boys. However, if everyone is so up in arms about animals being killed why not adopt a cat or dog from the animal welfare groups or pounds as they are being put down en masse due to people not wanting them after a short period or it does not suit their lives or they have had to be surrendered or taken from horrific situations. We can all cry foul but very few do any thing to help any animal in need. One can donate to groups who save some of these animals. The "hunters" that go to Africa and pay a small fortune to kill beasts that are used to people and there fore do not run away. They pose with beautiful dead creatures and think they are clever and bold. In my opinion they are low lifes. Humans have wiped out so many species and more going every day. We will be next at this rate.

At present I have 5 cats from rescues and I regularly donate to both the RSPCA and the AWL. While the brumbies are being called a problem I don't think shooting from a helicopter is the most humane way to deal with them. How can they be sure they kill them and not simply wound them leaving them to die a long slow death? What happens if there happen to be people in the vicinity that could be injured. If kangaroos are a problem why not allow them to be treated like cattle and sheep making them a "product" with value then there would be no need to cull.

My family is Australian for at least 6 generations. The only killing I've ever seen is my Dad shooting a .22 rifle to kill a rabbit for our dinner when we were on a farmer's land on holidays. I hate the idea that in Africa it is regarded as O.K. to shoot the native animals as a sport, no it is murder!

I don't mind things like visiting sites such as concentration camps or places like Prypiat so long as it is done respectfully. It is part of history and I think it would be challenging and eye opening. It's important to be able to empathise with people who lived through atrocities and disasters. What I find completely immoral and disgusting is people who go to countries where shooting wildlife is legal so they can photograph themself with a kill. For example killing a lion somewhere in Africa. Trophy hunting should be illegal in every country in the world. It is barbaric. (I'm from Australia)

I do not like the slaughter of big game, but I would find a body farm very interesting. I've shot guns, but they are illegal in some countries, so if someone wanted to visit a shooting range I don't think that is weird. I like different destinations. Bomb sites would be interesting. The Garden of Death where every plant in it is somehow deadly. Looks like I might be a dark tourist!

Where they have local guides and transport so they can chase down the animal. Lets get rid of their high powered rifle and give them a spear and have to chase the animal for miles until one or the other is exhausted, and have to fight to the death. Then they can skite how good a hunter they are!

I am in Australia and some of the most horrendous paedophilia have come from my shore to countries like Thailand to rape little boys and girls and often film them for snuff movies on the dark web, well I am VERY angry at the stance of government authorities who seem to turn a blind eye to the violation and death of innocent babies and children because these men spend a lot of money. The other form of Dark Tourism which I consider utterly appalling are the safari hunters who come from first world countries and go to countries on the African continent, mostly the Southern countries, which have organisations set up to save endangered species but who are more than happy to have Dentists and other people who can at least HOLD a gun even though they might shoot as accurately as poor "blind Freddy" pay a handsome sum to the safari operators so they can be a "Big Game Hunter" and shoot something! I AM thinking of both the incident with the Dentist from somewhere in the US who paid $50K to shoot a lion and he killed a gorgeous specimen who was known as a local "celebrity" and mascot in that area. If you "get your rocks off" by killing something that is trapped within a large compound and it was CREATED for the specific purpose of dying so that some rich person can go to a poor country and kill something, giving it a horrible death, then that is very "dark" indeed! I am referring to "big game" such as hippos, zebras, lions, wildebeasts and cheetahs, but I don't think that rhinos or elephants are included in these safari's however I am happy to be corrected if necessary. I am also not referring to a hunter in their own country who hunts for food to feed their family! Thanks for reading.

I thought you were talking about hunting humans, but you said the areas were evacuated due to radiation. Why would someone go there to hunt if there is radiation and what do they hunt? If they're hunting animals who are dying from radiation, then they are doing them a favor, and they can't reproduce offspring with deformities and keep breeding more sickly animals. Is that what you're talking about? What the hell is a body farm? Somewhere with bodies dead from radiation? I guess I've lived a sheltered life. I'm in the US, thankfully, we've never faced radiation that we're aware of. That doesn't mean, it isn't out there in some or another that we aren't aware of.

It may not happen so much these days but some countries still have poachers. Here in Australia poachers try and smuggle out lizards, birds, eggs, snakes, spiders etc etc what ever is a fad at the time or for some collector who simply just wants one. This is why boarder control and bio security in every country is so important. It amazes me what people try and bring into a country. We all know what can happen when some thing not native to a country is introduced or has been accidentally brought in. Havoc to habitats.

It is set up like a museum and memorial of all those that lost their lives during the Jewish Holocaust. I visited it as part of a 7 week tour around Europe in '95 and it is one of the few places we went that has had a lasting effect on me. I was on a coach with 50 other people and, as we drove away from that eerie place, nobody spoke for quite a while afterwards. We were all young adults in our 20s touring Europe and it was the single time that everyone sat in silence. I think places like this need to exist to educate future generations so similar occurrences never happen. Ground Zero in New York would be another example of this. If you consider these destinations "dark tourism" then, yes, they are ok.

Yet people visit haunted houses, cemeteries, mummies in museums... Wouldn't you need to pass a gun licence if you go to another country? A body farm studies decomposition for scientific/criminal reasons. I don't find it immoral but I find some people disrespectful of the culture/beliefs of the region they're visiting (like Japan's Suicide Forest - Aokigahara).

At this time when we are looking at ecological disasters why would this be moral. Also, countries that ban hunting have good reason. Taking advantage of poorer countries to vent your killer instincts could be nothing but immoral. I live in Canada and we get many hunters from outside the country that take advantage of our once pristine hinterlands.

And I believe that when you go to another country you should embrace the experience, if it’s legal to shoot a gun somewhere else, why not try shooting a gun legally while you’re there.. or visit and learn about the history of a place that may have been bombed etc. Each to their own. It really should depend on the individual and their interests on what they take part in. People should not be judged by what they may find interesting or told that it is immoral.. I don’t believe any of that type of thing is immoral at all.
