Discussion of the Day
Why are teachers striking?
Naz 129948805-Jul-23
If kid's education is so important to these New Zealand teachers, then why do they keep striking. We came from a time when there were 50 students in once class and the teachers were getting paid min wage. And today teachers are wanting smaller classes and more pay and our kids are suffering in all this, along with their parents !

    • What about the teachers Nazzy baby. How about you popping down to their joint to mow the lawn or fix a plumbing issue while they mark the tests and prepare class notes on the weekends cause theres no time to do it during school contact time with your lazy children
      ·
      • they strike because they can. Teaching is no longer a vocation, it's just a job.

        • These days people want the highest wages they can get and are no longer interested in what they are doing. Politicians are in there for what they can earn not to look after constituents and teachers are no longer interested in teaching their pupils a love of mathematics or English or science. Just want a high payment

          • Priscilla teachers are the back bone of our society. They work many hours of unpaid overtime and considering their importance to society they are undervalued. Your statement is derived from a lack of understanding and ignorance.

        • They’re underpaid and have to deal with so many students at once
          ·
          • Students should be in smaller classes. How can one person control 50 students at once? Impossible. I also came from a time when classes were smaller and wages were much lower but at least one thing that is different is the respect that students have for their teachers.

              • They are striking because they are under valued and under paid. There are fewer teachers available now and their jobs are harder. One of the reasons there are fewer teachers is that nobody wants to do the job and who would blame them! They have one of the most important jobs but a lot of them have to take other jobs in the school holidays to make ends meet.

No I am not. We will have to agree to disagree on that because teachers don't get paid enough for all the shit they have to put up with from children that have not been raised to know how to respect their elders... and their parents.

              • I was a child in 1980s my teacher had smaller classic and didn't teach me how to read or spelling. They also let me be bullet and smile at me as funny be bullet from others and teachers think was funny when I was called name all my school life with that my teacher also was a bullet to me in my school years to me. It's sad that my sister is paying for my read and writing from age 39 years old so I can get better in basic life school. I question why my sister needed pay for adults education them government that didn't care about my bullet. I became a low wage income this teachers put me down and others things they did me. I loss my childhood from this school and now my husband is and has pick up my peaces to fix my life up. And I question in the end this discussion of the day.

                  • I have little time for teachers but I do feel sorry that they have to deal with obnoxious rude and insolent children on a daily basis but what other job goes from 9 to 3 with 12 weeks holiday every year. I heard one teacher complain that she has to take the same weeks every year but would like time off at another time. Some people are never happy. The pay is pretty good as well and you never get the sack.

                    • I taught ten years in the US. All of my schools always started at 8:00 and, of course, we were on duty before then. The only work that stops at 3:00 is the actual instruction. In addition to the parent calls, grading and other paperwork, there is after school bus duty and detention duty. Some of these years I taught a federal remedial reading program so I had double paper work.

I preferred to work with the public which is much harder than dealing with children. Some can be quite rude, insulting and even use bad language, however, I kept smiling because I enjoyed my job. I didn't get 12 weeks holiday, I was paid much less, I worked much longer days and I often had homework, but it's the job I chose and enjoyed.

                    • I sometimes had to collect my children from school and almost the first people through the gate were the teachers. I would go to speak to them but they had already left. I went to speak to the headmaster one day and he had a baby rolling around on a blanket in his office. It seems the mother took the baby to school with her every day. I thought it very odd.

                  • Nobody gives a shit about all the additional time that teachers give up to enrich kids lives, all they think about is the inconvenience of the strikes. People forget that teachers have kids also and are striving to have a reasonable standard of life themselves

                    • When we allowed do gooder's to have their way and we had to stop disciplining our kids (disciplining not abusing) we set ourselves up for this generation of unruly, law breaking, rude and abusive kids. Parents then expected teachers to do their job of parenting because it was too hard for them when they couldn't teach their children to behave in an acceptable manner, without being accused of abusing their children. So good on the do gooder's for giving us these unruly kids.

                      • Mo.B, I hear this alot from people I know and care about. For some parents discipline is hitting, scolding, embarrassing them in front of others . I am also told that's they way they were brought up and if it's good enough for them and that's how they learnt respect. I was too,hit everyday, sometimes for what I did or believed ,sometimes for my younger siblings because it was my job to make sure they behaved. I don't,hit my kids. I have my reasons. I have a 30yr old,no longer at home, and a 17year old. They are well mannered good kids. I did discipline them, but differently. I understand your sentiment. But it's not for me.

I didn't smack any of my kids, except when as tiny toddlers they poked their fingers in the electric sockets, then a tap on the hand is what they got. What we have to understand is that all parents do what they can with the knowledge that they have at the time. Discipline comes in different forms. I have a 64 year old, a 62 year old a 60 year old and a 40 year old. They have children and three of them have grandchildren all of the kids and grandkids have had dicipline in their young lives. Whether that be, not going out with their friends to sitting on the naughty step. What we have to do is stand by what we say. We shouldn't say they can't do something if they have been naughty and then give in to them. They understand they have been punished if we stand by our word. We should all love our children unconditionally but don't let them get out of control. When we do that we get the situation we have now, unruly and abusive kids all ending up in trouble with the police.

                    • Yes, it’s too harsh on students, lot of countries this happens, how much relaxed time teachers enjoy every holiday? They shouldn’t be asking for more pay except the wage increases they receive each year! Teaching is a rewarding career! They should be remunerated on par with their qualifications and experience etc but those terms should be negotiated with the authorities without going for strike action which results in students miss out on continuity of their learning. Also students can be stressed and depressed 😩 over teachers’ strike actions!

                      • Australian teachers are being faced with larger classes due to lack of teachers. They are striking for a fair reason. They have not had a reasonable increase in wages nor any assistants with the much heavier clerical work these bigger classes cause. They are also subject to being badly treated by their students.

                          • Where I live in Washington state, each classroom has teacher's aides to help them. I was a substitute aide for a few years. I applied for Special Education since I had worked with adults with disabilities already, and I loved working with those kids! It's the teachers with whom I had trouble. I finally left because I didn't like the way the kids were being treated, and Teachers said I wasn't being assertive enough. I don't know about teachers in New Zealand, but if our teachers want smaller classes and more pay, they'd better learn how to work with children first, especially the ones with disabilities! ;-(

As it election year the opposition parties will say anything to get your vote, as they don't have to deliver even if they get into power blaming the pass government over spending. Both main parties here in NZ are very good at this.

                                • Maybe they are striking because Parents now expect them to do more than just Teach them but also to Feed them. To look after them after the schoold day ends and not just Monday-Friday but at weekedns as well. It is well beyond time that Parents - both of them if two parents in the home - started taking Resposibility for THEIR children. After all, they decided to breed so they should be prepared to actually rear those children and not expect everyone else to do it for them and also to pay for it all whilst the parents pursue their selfish, self-engrossed careers. Give me a rational explanation why those who choose not to have children should have Their Taxes used to pay for other people's children's upbringing? Teachers should Teach and that is all they should be doing and Not be being used by Parents to act as sort of Surrogate Parents.

                                  • Same ,36 in my class every year, blackboards. We had some kids excell, some kids never learnt to read. Our teachers were great, but could only do so much. Now my ex inlaws are all teachers in Australia, and the main bone of contention here is,like nurses they have to pay each year to work*(registry). Also have to update their skills in maths ,English and whatever they specialise on a regular basis( so they go back to study after they finish work). They have a list of requirements they must achieve to keep their job most include things like, how many kids pass above a certain level. Reviews they must do,marking, program planning( they are given a curriculum of things the student must learn that year, but have to plan all the lessons) submit and review them. Some schools require more ie catholic/private. I actually think they do more, but get paid more. It's a stressful job. And they also have no authority in classroom. There is no keeping kids back, corporal punishment, kids can tell you to get f*****, and all the other lovely things they say and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it. Not an easy job.

It is not right that they live as porpers while teaching your children and have larger workloads placed on them at the same time so they are doing far more with far less.

There is no discipline at all any where, kids these day aren't even scared of the police. They go to court, they are out on bail and commit the same crime over and over again. Unfortunately they are not killing themselves but innocent hard working people that deserve so much more out of life than what has been dished out. Clearly wrong time, wrong place. Then you ask why are the teachers protesting? Give me strength come on the answer is so simple. I would not be a teacher these days and the ones I do know have had a gut full. They are constantly being told to `F' off on a daily basis, told they are ugly and then they swing off their arms causing the teacher pain. Grabbing their arms and then using all their weight to pull them over. Not getting any better that is for sure and so they should want smaller classes and more money. At least they can't bring guns into the schools but other weapons like swords, machetes, knives, flick blades, knuckle busters are found on a daily basis. And again you want to know why the teachers are striking? You try teaching them, you try home schooling your little darling and I see how long you last.

Most kids are polite, but there are those who believe they can't do a thing wrong and that the world owes them everything. Teachers are not able to discipline students anymore, it feels like the students have more right than the teachers do at times. I wholeheartedly agree with the strikes, the teachers deserve to go to work without fear of their lives being put at risk. Students deserve the right to learn without being in fear of bullying and should be able to learn from teachers fully qualified for the particular subject too, but unfortunately in some schools, a good teacher is hard to come by. :/

Secondly, teaching is essentially a way for societies to evolve in their social conditions, so if teachers are striking is because they are trying to avoid a delay deliver from a government unfair decision about education. Also, you can get more accurate information about the issues by asking directly to the union members that proposed the strike.

At some point in time, the parents decided their children are perfect, the teachers were the enemy. I know a teacher that had to write the student an apology note because he made the student feel bad by correcting him in front of the class. Teachers have been assaulted by students here too, in the high schools. You are all correct, the school principals make too much money, teachers & assistants not enough.

Furthermore, the best way for YOUR children to get an excellent education is to be homeschool by their PARENT(S)!

Also now teachers are being abused daily by parents and students and often with violence as are many others in the public forum. I was taught in a huge classroom with one teacher. We all were well behaved too. I think some of the stuff taught in schools these days is not suitable especially in the primary years of schooling.
