Speed limits
Bob M08-Aug-22
The speed limits in Australia are far too draconian, if you stick to the mandatory speed limits when overtaking you would stand a good chance of being killed or involved in a head-on collision. Australians are not taught how to overtake and the law as it stands does not permit safe overtaking, if you overtake a lorry or a car that speeds up, and you have to exceed the speed limit you can and will be done for speeding, it appears the Police have no discretion or prefer to not use their powers of discretion as they obviously get brownie points the more they can catch.

America is like driving the audoban. We lose hundreds every day in Arizona just from car accidents. It's like nascar, watching traffic.

I agree usually the ones who speed & drive dangerously never get caught. Just the poor old motorist who goes a few kms over the speed limit. It is very hard to stick to some speed limits when you are driving a car that does not like going slow. I can be out on the freeway trying to stick to my speed limit so how come everyone passes me. Just stupid!

They are used to reduce speeds on country roads that in disrepair, much cheaper to put a lower speed sign than fix the roads.

The word lorry would indicate you aren't an Aussie because Aussies drive trucks. One of my sons is a truckie and he drives at night because he dislikes cars. I don't have a problem with speed limits and my only complaint is that I can go from 50k to 40k then 50k again then 60k and I'm not even out of my street. Quite soon it's 70k then 80k and I think it can even get up to 90k by which time I'm tired of having to keep checking what speed I'm doing. Can someone tell me why we have so many?

I'm a pom and was taught to drive properly by a driving school and not pick up my parent's bad habits as I see every day here in Australia even the Police leave a lot to be desired

Well Bob I taught all 3 of my children to drive and all are very good drivers with my youngest son getting an HC license which means he can drive a heavy combination. He has driven tag axle buses, truck & dog and now drives semi's. Believe me he had to do so many hour's before he got his license and if he had any bad habits I'm sure they would have made mention of them. In all his years of driving he has only ever had one ticket and that was due his not being able to find the weigh-in station. I seem to remember he had 8 hours straight with the tester in order to pass. He will be the first person to admit there are cowboys on the roads who give everyone else a bad rap, but that isn't everyone.

I don't drive can't answers this question. A question is if a person speed to get something so they don't be later. But if they in attack they needed to stop and take more time getting a to b. So the point is don't speed.

Unfortunately some people don't want to do the speed limit. Some people don't feel comfortable doing 110k so use the slow lane, and unless you're overtaking you have to use the slow lane and if you are doing 110k you will catch-up to the person who isn't and you will want to overtake. There are lanes that are called "overtaking lanes" for that very reason. Some people feel even 110k isn't fast enough and I DO love to see them pulled over with Mr Policeman leaning into their window.

You are quite right Bob, I hate it when I am coming off an oframp and no one cares about giving way especially when your lane comes to an end and the outside lane decides he wants to claim your lane when he/she could have kept their lane

For most of my driving in NSW it has always been believed that the police have to fine a useful number of drivers daily to meet some quota. Finance reigns supreme!

I don't think it is the speed limits per se which are draconian it is the way they are interpreted by the Police which are. Always ask for Photographic Evidence if you receive a fine in the mail. I try to keep to the Posted Speed Limit at all times but, just as Bob M says, you try to overtake a car or truck, with the latter in some areas restricted to a Lower Speed Limit, and what do they all seem to do? They speed up! On our local Freeway, Trucks and Buses are required to keep to 60kph which means they stay in the inside left lane - the other two lanes have 90 or 100 Speed Limits. What happens? A Truck/Bus driver gets tired of having to stay where they are and, particularly during Peak Hours, they hop out into the middle lane or sometimes the outside one, as soon as they get there they then slow down to the 60kph they are required to drive at. How is that for Selfishness? How is that as an incentive to incite Road Rage? As I understand it if an unmarked police car is behind you they have to follow you for a certain distance before they can categorically prove you were speeding, so to simply speed up for a few seconds to get past another vehicle which has decided to speed up because you are trying to pass them would not incur a Fine. The drivers the coppers should be giving those massive fines to are those drivers who simply don't want you to pass and as you start to do so they speed up. We are told that those Speed Cameras do allow for a few kph over the limit which should address that problem. On the other hand, if you are a regular road user, like we are, we know where the fixed speed cameras are so make sure - much to the annoyance of some lead-foots behind us - to drive at the Posted Speed Limit!

Use your own discretion and over take when safe. I have exceeded the speed limit when over taking, but always go back to the speed limit when safely past the cars or trucks

My ex-father-in-law was a police office in Queensland. I never met him, and I don't think that I missed anything since he ran his wife over with his car! As far as speeding, even though it was in kms, it seemed fast to me from what I'm used to in the states! I followed the speed limits, so I had no problems in that respect. Since the crime is low there, they probably have little else to do except to catch speeders. Perhaps some driver's education in high school would help. I have taken several courses over the years for various reasons. One I took recently was to get a lower premium on my car insurance. Maybe they need some incentives. According to our law, we are not allowed to pass if it causes us to exceed the speed limit. You will find police officers everywhere who show favoritism or maybe are harder on younger drivers. When I was young, I needed them to be hard on me. I was driving drunk and exceeding the speed limit on a regular basis. Typical teen and young adult behavior that needed to put me in check! If a car speeds up when you are trying to pass it, you should not race with it, but let it have the right-of-way in the name of safety! They are idiots and are not practicing defensive driving. We are taught to share the road, and that nobody has the right-of-way. Someone has to yield if proceeding could result in an accident or harm to a pedestrian. I always look before going through a green light that the traffic that has to stop, does indeed stop. If I proceed, I had the right-of-way, but it could cause an accident even if the other car was in the wrong. It's all about accident avoidance. One thing that bugs the hell out of me is that motorcyclists no longer are required to wear helmets, but drivers of vehicles must wear seatbelts! It makes no sense, and I do see idiots on motorcycles with bare heads that are flying down the highway only feet from the passing pavement! Where is the justice there? People are being killed because of no helmets. I guess if you're that stupid, the law doesn't value you much! However, their loved ones do!

Problem in Australia is that people are taught to pass the driving test. They are not taught how drive responsibly, how to reverse park on a hill, an emergency stop or any other of the things that drivers do every day. They are certainly not taught how to merge. They drive with their limbs hanging out of their windows, they tailgate and they speed and they drive irresponsibly by speeding up when another driver tries to overtake.

I read a report many years ago showing that Sasticially the most dangerous speeds to drive at where between 20 and 70 KPH. You where far more likely to be injured or killed when driving at this speed range than any other. On the converse side the speed that resulted in fewer inquired or deaths where below 2 KPH and above 275 KPH so it was surmised that all speeds between 2 KPH and 275 KPH be outlawyered and because the most dangerous place on the road to drive was through an intersection it was probably better to enforce the upper limit than the lower as you would be in the intersection for such a short time the likelihood of being involved in a collision was 300 times less likely. Statically it made perfect sense and also meant that Ambulances would not have to be expensive and highly equipped as a collision above 275 KPH would not require any advanced life saving equipment and because Police would no longer need vehicles to chase down speeding drivers you could give them push bikes to move around and do their duty after all they would be no need to stop someone doing over 275 KPH and those driving below would either be attempting to slow down to avoid another vehicle which would be a serious collision or where still gaining speed to reach the lower side of the speed limit. This change would also have required much better designed vehicles which where not Bureaucratic Committee Developed but designed by engineers who knew what they where doing and they would accelerate, handle and brake correctly unlike the current piles of rubbish we have on the road these days. So over all requiring everyone to drive above 275 KPH was a win for the entire country.

Yes must admit I totally agree with you. To be honest I think people are taught how to drive properly but they DO NOT USE COMMONSENSE in this country a lot of the time. AS AN EXAMPLE - I was recently driving on the Toodyay road where the speed limit is 100 - and that is fine in good clear weather - but it was teaming with rain and very poor vision and people still passing at those speeds. I honestly think it is people 'attitudes' that is the main problem. Same thing recently on Freeway out of Perth travelling south. Almost gale force winds coming across the river and raining so heavy and people all doing 100 and passing each other.

Absolutely agree with you! Recently there was a speed camera to catch people in an overtaking lane on a hill. A lot of people seem to speed up in these areas and then slow down after the overtaking lane so the only way of getting past them safely is to use the lane for what it's designed for and the safest way is to pass as quickly as possible. The authorities need to stop "dumbing down" the roads for the incompetent and teach people to drive with a reasonable degree of skill.

I overtook a roadtrain which was just starting its momentum from a rest stop. It took me about 5 mins to get past him. I settled in at 100 kmh. 30 minutes later, that roadtrain overtook me, he must have been doing 150 plus with about 100 tons of rig and load!

One is of those who drive occasionally just going shopping or just not working. The other is one of those who drive for living and all the time are under pressure not to be late. So police fines the drivers for living and those tradies just include that in their expenses and move that to their customer's bills eventually. So if we think it is a tradie's loss we forget that we pay their losses to entice them to come see us and do the job. It is financial. So may need more regulation. Also those driving under speed limit should be equally fined (no Ha- Ha money) for causing losses to other people.
