Do you purchase natural non-toxic household cleaning products?
Kimberly H17-Oct-20
I have just started making changes within my household and the changes are amazing. No more allergies from toxic chemicals. I only wish I had done it sooner.

Yes - have been using non toxic cleaning products for ages. My daughter came to stay for a while recently and she was using some type of clothes water softener in the rinse - and as soon as I started taking the clothes off the line back to sneezing ................ almost instantly. Not for me anymore!!!

I buy Good Earth, not because they are non toxic but because they do the job I need them to do, never check the label

I use vinegar in the washing machine, just lift the cap on the agitator and fill it up at the beginning of the 1st cycle. Clothes come up smelling fresh and of whatever is on the off the shelf ones.

I found Ecoworx on Facebook and I won't buy anything else now. It's brilliant and I've even used it on my dog when she rolled in grease. I just sprayed it on and wiped it off. Didn't affect her at all and I don't lose my breath when using it. It even worked cleaning my oven and the baked on grease on my glass oven door.

We only buy tried and trusted brands - don't really care about non-toxic unless the labels alert us

Yes, I have been an advocate for many years, way before it was trendy, Bi carb and white vinegar clean many different things, the only things I buy are antibacterial wash up detergent, liquid washing detergent and orange oil multipurpose spray cleaner which is all natural and no rinsing, it is also antibacterial, I use that on many different surfaces. No fumes!

It’s great to use natural products like vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice but you still need some chemicals for stains etc to scrub clean, natural products require a lot of elbow grease.

People think that natural cleaners are not toxic but just pour some vinegar onto an earthworm and see if you change your mind. Think of the Pyrethrum chrysanthemum for an example of nature’s toxins. Natural items degrade easier than some manufactured cleaners.

Nothing is toxic at certain other doses. Indeed, the substances with the highest level of toxicity are mostly natural (see "5 most poisonous substances in the world - NZ Herald" https://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/5-most-poisonous-substances-in-the-world). Hazard mitigation and risk management are what keep people safe and alive. You sould be more worried about Botulinum in your food than household cleaners. In reality, both are hazard mitigated and risk managed. Except where people without an understanding of science attempt their own production. You are free to do what you like. I will live my life based on evidence and fact, not magical thinking.

The list includes 'ethanol in alcoholic beverages'. This can be sold as it's not 'toxic' if used according to directions and guidelines. People can also overdose on alcohol. About 3 million people a year die from it. People can also overdose on water (and drown in it), yet water is freely available and even piped into homes. Water kills about 320,000 people a year. In NZ alone, 5000 a year die from smoking. Household products (bleach, disinfectants, detergents, cleaning products, cosmetics and vinegar) globally rank 4th for child poisoinings. Most poisonings are over the counter medicines, then prescription medicines, and recreational drugs. "While most exposures to cleaning agents result in mild poisoning, bleach, dishwasher detergents and ammonia can lead to severe tissue damage." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK310644/ Everything is chemicals. Now being in the country didn't mean I could head down the local shop and get some. 25 min each way driving wasn't an option. So I chucked baking soda, white vinegar and citric acid in them and left for a few hours. Awesome results with literally no scrubbing. Super sparkly clean.

I don't like to overuse detergents if I can get by with elbow grease. A lot of jobs can be done with my microfibre cleaning cloths & water. I've been going through a lot of antibacterial wipes, but just since COVID: I do the light switches, remote controls, phone & door handles - especially the front door. I'm asthmatic - high risk!
