Discussion of the Day
We should raise the price of junk food
Johana C27-Aug-20
If you take a look back in history, carrying a few extra pounds was a sign of wealth because rich people were the only ones that could afford fattening food. Fast forward to 2020 and junk food is cheaper than healthy food and poor people are fatter than rich people. One would assume if we were to raise the price of junk food exponentially. Our health would improve. Thoughts?

Poor people eat more junk food because the healthy stuff is so expensive, that is the real problem, that’s why we have subsidised food at schools. Booze , cigarettes, food that is the order of priority

People have a choice what is put in their mouth, raising junk food prices will not work. Nowadays junk food is more expensive than "healthy food".

It won't stop people eating it, you either like eating it or you don't. Won't make a difference.

Think that making healthy food more affordable and cheaper than the junk food would work better than increasing the prices of junk food.

no, i limit my intake a lot now, sick of everything going up. Also sick of do gooders raising prices of fuel, power, water, cigarettes, alcohol because its better for me or the planet. But if it make you feel better about your intake, roll your next burger up in a tight ball, and stick it up your bum!

This is a ridiculous question. The cost to the medical system which, if the people who consume this trash had their Darwinian result would die and stop costing the rest of us continued cash keeping them alive, is so surmountable. However, the politicians of both side have absolutely no back-bone, like the Americans won't work across their political divide (on principle) so we all have to put up with short-short-short term thinking.

I think it is time people took responsible for their own eating choices. As parents we guide our children to eat healthy. As adults it is time to grow up and make responsible choices.

I agree. I have eating/drinking issues, but I know it is entirely my own choice. The Government doesn't give a shit. Making the right decision would cost them votes, so they won't do the right thing.

If your shop around you could buy fresh vegetable and rice and still eat healthy in a day. I tried it a few times it is still cheaper than take away. Try it some time. If you spend $10 on take away for yourself look around and see what you could buy you could still make a good healthy meal. Sometimes there are sites you could feed a family for $10 using protein and 3 veg. 1kg of drumsticks cost $4 and the rest can be spent on veg. There you go a good healthy meal. Unfortunately sometimes we become lazy.

The "rich man's disease" ... a term I often heard as a child overseas ,,, not sure if it was bandied around here. Raising the price won't make any difference to the rich just make the poor poorer! Gee, just felt the spark of a light globe moment ... how will we tell them apart, these portly souls, as some rich eccentrics like to promenade around in a slept in clothes fashion mode! My final thoughts, people will do and eat what they want when they want and when they can get it!

People are just too busy these days (prior COVID 19) and it seems to be all about convenience instead of thinking of what is actually going into the body and the long term consumption of these foods. Me? our family eats junk food perhaps twice a year and frankly, I prefer to cook a meal from scratch. Fortunately, I have quite a bit of garden space where I can (and do) grow vegies.............and yes, take away can be expensive.

Advertising play a big part. People would always love burgers and pizza. Maybe those fast food chains could introduce healthier sides rather than all the usual greasy stuff.

We should make the good food cheaper, it is so expensive, compare a wrap or sandwich to Maccas or Hungry Jacks meal, no wonder people on low incomes go for the junk food, it is about half the price, we are on a low income but cook almost everything from scratch, only because we are retired and have the time, don't eat any Maccas or Hungry Jacks, even make home made hamburgers for a treat, at least we know what is in them. We call Maccas "Chew and Spew" it is such crap food, I couldn't eat it if you paid me, feel sorry for those that don't have much choice.

Why not improve the quality of Junk Food instead? Lower, or ban, the amount of Sugar, Salt and Fats, Ban the use altogether of All Trans Fats - they are a by-product of Petroleum so why would you knowing ingest a poison like that. I am not sure, but it may also be accumulative in your body and, over time be the cause of Cancers and other nasties. There would be nothing wrong with Fast/Junk food if the makers took the trouble to use decent ingredients and that does not, necessarilty, mean more expensive. E.g. We make 12 Hamburgers using a lower fat content Beef Mince, some Oats or Breadcrumbs, Onion and an Egg. The All up cost? About $2 per burger, plus Sugar Free Bread Roll, maybe an extra 50c on top. If we can do it so can the big Junk Food Purveyors.

No people like the junk food and soft drinks so they will pay the extra money without question. They need to bring sports back into schools and outside school hours at a cost that is affordable as by the time you pay for the equipment, shoes, fees, etc. it becomes prohibitive to most families. We used to be a sporting nation but no so much now and kids would rather sit on their phones or computers.

It's so much cheaper buying food that is in season and cheap to cook. Maybe even grow some of your own vegies. The food I find dearest to buy is meat. So we just eat less meat and buy what's on special. You can get some bargains if you look around.

We shouldn't punish people for their bad habits but try to help them. It would be so much better if the prices for fresh food would come down a bit but that would be up to the supermarkets (wouldn't want to take away the money from the farmers who work hard to produce our food). Honestly though it is still so much cheaper to cook home made than it is to go and buy fast food these days. I haven't eaten at any of those restaurants for about 9 months and the only reason why I did last December was because we were on holidays and had something quick before our flight.

I am obese trying to kick the habit. perhaps if healthy food was a lot cheaper and not so high I could eat better. I do admit I need the help to lose 150 pounds. it is hard when you feel overwhelmed if anyone wants to help me set mini goals I would appreciate it. I have a few in mind. 1 drink water, 2 work out 30 minuets a day, 3 find healthy snacks I do better with mini meals scattered through the day. where to start first is where I trip up. I know since my husband has better hours we can do evening walks

Your suggestions are a good start. Drink water before your meals and that should help you eat less. Green tea is also very good for your metabolism but black tea is fine as well. If you are drinking soft drinks you need to kick that habit, reduce the amount slowly if you have to until you eventually don't drink it anymore. As for snacks I have started roasting chickpeas and that has been a success, can't get enough of them and they are so easy to do. I'd recommend going on you tube and finding cooking channels and that will give you some inspiration and ideas on what you can make. Evening walks for exercise is perfect to start so I hope you can do this everyday. Also just going to mention that I'm not an expert or dietitian so you many want to talk to your doctor about it as well especially if you have any other health conditions.

I hate how powers that be like to think of new ways to raise revenue by attaching it to a cause. Food and drink don't make people fat; people do that to themselves (unless they have a medical reason or it is due to the medicine they are taking).

People go without food for alcohol, tobacco and drugs so I think people will go without good food for the bad. Plus, why should those of us who do have self control have to pay more for for a treat because of those who can't control themselves. People need to take responsibility for their actions and learn to control their urges and cravings

Sadly it is cheaper for parents to buy a bottle of coke for their kids than what it is to buy a bottle of milk, which we all know the latter is the healthier option. If the price of good healthy food were to decrease and junk food increase, then one would think that the health of people would improve some what. Of course exercise also needs to be done. On the breakfast show this morning it was stated that obesity is also a problem with this bloody covid 19, which will be around for some time yet, also when a vaccine is available for it, they dont think it will work as well for those who are obese. Come on NZers, we live in a good country, so get yourselves fit and healthy so you can enjoy it for a lot longer.

I shopped mostly at the local fruit & veg shop & I was surprised how much I could buy! I cooked meals from scratch & I'm sure I was eating healthier than before.

Society tried taxing alcohol exponentially and it has not stopped individuals from drinking alcohol! Society should try a different approach with junk food. Make healthy food (cheap as junk food or cheaper then junk food) and more ready available to everyone - then junk food is!
