Discussion of the Day
Do you talk to your pets like they're people?
Christina B 112245401-Oct-23
I'm curious to see what people have to say about that. I personally talk to my cat and dog all the time! They are good listeners, and they don't judge me, and they're always happy to see me, lol

  • Oh yes, I love talking to my bird. He is so human that even at times when I say " Papa do not do that he protest and comes to my face and goes "yap, yap, yap yap" like he really does not like beeing told what to do. At times he even bits me and runs away. Oh what a funny bird. Viviane

    • I talk to my cats all the time, and quite often they meow or chirp in response. In fact, there is good reason to believe that they understand us. One time my husband told our cat Ebony to let us know when it was 11 o'clock (time to go to bed). We didn't think any more of it, until at about ten minutes before 11, there was Ebony, sitting in front of him and looking up with big eyes as if to say, 'Well, you asked'.

        • My last pet I had was a dog. And yes spoke to him with the consideration and care I would of any other family member as that was what he was. A very valued, and much missed member of my family

                  • I'm in this situation. I was working at a place that bought in gard dogs every night and I had to pass them in doing my job. Each time I gently said to them (hi! How are you.) After a while one dog would come over and sit and watch me. I think that no one ever said a kind word to it.

                          • Oh definitely. I talk to my "baby" cat (9 years old) all the time. She understands what I am saying to her - repetitive speech- they will learn. Most times she gives a little squeak- noise back unleaa she has been naughty and I growl - then I get "the evil" eye.

                            • Most of the time I talk to my pets as if they were 2 year old children. As a child I used to tell the animals all my problems and share some good things, but mostly they had little input :) Both my pets now are getting older, their hearing and eyesite is decreasing-sad

                                      • NO, we don't talk to humans like we do animals. BIG difference, If we started talking to our friends and others like we do animals, they would think we were crazy, and maybe we are.

                                                        • My understanding is that all animals have an ability to read happy situation and dangerous one, and they react accordingly. Happy situations , tailwagging and tongue licking and body rubbing. They understand much more than we know

                                                                • Sometimes, but most times I use a voice that I'm sure can't stand but it's my doggy talk and when I use that voice it makes her so much cuter 😄
                                                                  ·

And she seems to feel more included, obedient (by human standards), and even follow up with the expectations from those word/s. Long sentences not so much and baby talk just means playtime! When a dog contemplates "what's in it for me" , this really seems to work with our pet. On this note: do you think dogs/cats/pets are bilingual (or just students of associative learning)?🐶
                                                                    ·

                                                                      ·

Have you ever heard the expression dumb animals? They may be good company but taking to them is very innocent but don't expect a response. As long as it doesn't get out of hand and you start thinking, or hearing, the animal is talking back telling you what to do. That can get scary

Whereas most pets won't say an audible human word, they do seem to have ways of communication among themselves and across to us humans. I often wondered what exactly are they thinking....oh boy can they ever keep a secret. Beware, some people talk to their plants and their bank accounts too, so venting may be therapeutic/healthy!🤣

She would get so excited and jump around when I got home from shopping etc, we would have little chats everyday. I loved her with all my heart and sadly she passed away several weeks ago and I am still absolutely heart broken.

I have been told that some dogs know as much as a 2 year old and I believe that. I taught her commands by talking and hand movements so she responds to either but I can say things like you are on the wrong side and she changes side, which way do we go today and she looks left and right and then decides etc. I often think I should write down what she knows just out of curiosity but she surprises me all the time understanding even more. Animals are amazing creatures.

They listen, they understand, they respond appropriately. I also talk to my plants; they feel the gentle and loving vibrations and also respond appropriately by growing well. They like to be watered with tepid water. Some go outside for the summer and love that; growing and flowering beautifully:) Communication is invaluable in ALL relationships. I also feed a bunch of bees every day from spring to mid-October. I give them sugary water with some red food colouring. Been feeding them for years and haven't been stung once; it's really rather beautiful. They get so excited when they see me coming and I'm sure they feel the love and appreciate the vibrations of my voice as I talk softly to them. It's a healthy hive I've got going....from just a few several years ago to too many to count now; I'd guess up to 100 at a time are out there buzzing around:)
