Discussion of the Day
Work - privilege or obligation?
Natalia J02-Dec-21
Should we accept work as unconditional privilege or should we take our stand and demand more rights in this long life obligation?

long term employment is something that most of us are going to have to experience...aside from conditions and rights...the most important thing is that whatever you are doing is funny at least part of the time...and that you can have time to enjoy those bits...a job that is continuously boring is hell on earth....

I think Covid has given a necessary shakeup to the way businesses operate & think about their employees. With the demand shortage across certain industry sectors businesses have realised to value their staff more. I also feel we have a right to decide on whether we have continued flexible working arrangements instead of haviing to clock in clock at the office if the business outcomes are being sucessfully met. Dragonian management styles are no longer acceptable and Covid wasa good way to show businesses that.

well I think that unless one wants to depend on welfare all their life, then work, if you can find it,is more of a privilege especially if you have a family and a mortgage

In the end of the day the rights we get is worth only of what we can sell. You can sell your skills and hard working attitude or you you can sell sell your demands? Good luck!

I worked for the same company for 40 years (and a few months). I loved my job (and the people I worked with) - until an interstate company took it over and changed their decisions, sometimes every day. Sending letters to the same businesses I'm not sure I would have enjoyed being a customer though. I didn't retire, I was retrenched with several others when more of our work was transferred interstate at very short notice. I do still miss some of the other staff though

Neither. Work is simply a means to an end. The fortunate few can make a living doing something they enjoy or from which they get satisfaction The rest do what they have do to get through, to have a roof over their head & food in their belly. There are however rights incorporated into work conditions which have been hard won such as pay rates, holidays, sick leave parental leave etc. Depending what country you live in these will vary, but they should be met and are worth standing up for to ensure employers abide by the appropriate entitlements.

After 10 or more years of retirement you very much miss the job. It's not only the money, its the friends you make at work some of who become friends for life. My partner is now very much missing his friends as they fade away with ill health and also feels disenfranchised by not having the wins and losses of his working life. By and large I think we have had a fair time over the years as our working rights have progressed. I woujld not like to have to work in some other countries in the world!

you reap what you sow, dont work, dont eat. it is a principle of adults but not for those who want everything for nothing, not realising that makes them a slave. This new socialist, everyone is equal BS, is destroying the world, I worked all my life, and it depends if the questioner is including housework as work, or just paid work... Not very clear, but you never get anything worth while for nothing. and what does 'take out stand to damand more rights???? what rights??? Very interested

Well people these days don't stay in the same job for long, ask a 30 y/o could the stay in the same job for nearly 40 years and there you have your answer. They don't any more. We don't have youngsters learning a trade like plumbing or carpentry or electricians, they don't even want to farm any more only because the wages farmers get can't support their families. I have been privileged that I don't have to work any more nor do I want to start working. Yes money is nice but it isn't every thing. We make do with what we get, have and have gotten. Life is fine the way it is and simple.

Definitely a privilege. But we are a slave to money. Work is doing us a favour by paying us money for our efforts. Is taking surveys a privilege? Yeah I think it is. You don't have to do it but it's nice to have the option so the fact that it's available is a privilege. If you take work away it definitely is a privilege and people appreciate having a job a lot more. On the other hand, employers should treat employees adequately for the job that they do. Seeing as it is the second place we spend most of our lifetime (besides home) it wouldn't hurt to make it a nicer place for employees to work. I don't think employees should go overboard with their demands though. Just the simple things like safe environment, a nice place to have a cuppa and managers that treat you with respect is enough.

Work is definitely an unconditional privilege. I am not sure what rights one could demand except higher pay or better working conditions. No work, no money and lots of problems. But I do think a person should always be advancing themselves to the fullest. I had a good 8 years as a small business owner. Being your own boss takes discipline but is definitely worth it.

Work is both a privilege and an obligation, right now. But it must be made safe as it can be. There are difficult dangerous jobs out there, and, thank God, there are heroes willing and able to do these jobs.

If work is a privilege then you should be paying for it however if it is an Obligation you get paid for doing it so you work out which it is.

I think it depends on your job if you are self-employed it's a privilege if you work for a company or something else then you need to work for a wage and do your best I have done both I worked in an aged care home and worked self-employed as a massage therapist the last time before I retired to be my mothers' carer

It's a bit of both. If you don't work you don't have a roof over your head and food on the table. Sometimes you need to get a 2nd job to make ends meet, especially the way things are with the cost of living being so high. Prices are changing on a regular basis.

There's nothing easy in that experience. The job seeker was not at all fussy, just wanted a job, job any and feel his own money jingling in his pocket.

It didn't matter what I did, from garbo to sweeping floors or to my trade as a fitter/machinist. Maybe I've been lucky but worked hard.

And in return you should be paid according to the pay rate of that particular task within the company. Be treated equally and fairly and be given a safe environment to work in.

We should take our stand and demand more (and better) advancement opportunities for workers (based on ability - not on family wealth). The federal minimum wage in the usa is $7.25 an hour - and was last raised ion July 24, 2009. The usa is the most dangerous country (HAVE COUNTRY) to reside and work in. There is a direct correlaction between violence and a unreasonable low minimum wage (which can not sustain life - but - raises the specter of civil war) - see - USA - as an example!

Demands for rights should be limited to working conditions, a decent wage, no gender bias or any other type of bias, equality in pay etc.
