Feed four people for under $10 challange
Natalia J 52132117-Dec-22
If you turn on TV, there is a chance you will see food experts showing us how to prepare a cheap family meal for four people under $10. Have you ever took part in such a challenge? Would you be able to feed four people for under $10?
Comments
  • Pasta is pretty cheap. By a large can of flavoured fish (tuna with sweet chilli for example), add some oil and a little cheese and that's a meal on its own. Plenty of casserole dish recipes on the internet for under $10 as well.

        • I have never taken part - but I think it would be very hard to feed a family of 4 for under $10 - that is to say with a good healthy meal. You can reduce the cost of buying veges etc - but don't forget to add the water you use to grow them and any fertilizers you use etc etc.

          • Make a meal with seasonal veges or frozen. It used to be easy to feed four people for under $10.00 and if you grow your veges hourself you will romp in and be able to make desert as well
            ·
            • Not difficult to do! Eggs, pasta, toasted sandwichs, baked potatoes stuffed with tuna and cheese, salads with lentils or canned beans, rice dishes...
              ·
              • The more people you have to cook for the cheaper per person it will become.
                ·
                • A large jar of chunky pasta sauce (with veg) is about $3, 500g pasta around $1. That's $4 (Aus) for a basic meal, add in some mince or lentils/beans to bulk it out and it should still just about come in under $10

                    • If you have canned tuna, you can make toasties or stir into pasta sauce. Buy pasta sauce with vegetables in them for a healthier option.

                            • I don’t turn on the TV anymore. I do turn on common sense and what I learned from my mother - and yes, it is possible. Who has $100 to feed a family just one meal? The experts who call for such a senseless, almost insulting challenge might. $10 is, and many times must be enough - to create something delicious and nutritious, without creating waste.
                              ·
                              • Challenge, not challange. I have never "took" part in such a challenge, but I have "taken" part in such a challenge. It's easy as pie. (Pardon my pun). Anyone who can't do that is not creative in any cooking sense. $10 will easily feed 4 people, adults at that, a hearty, well-rounded meal with all the food groups present on the plate. I'll write when it isn't four in the am what that meal is, so you all don't think I'm blowing smoke up everyone's _________.

                                      • I've watched that show 'Extreme Couponing'. Blown away by their savings and what they got. If we had that in NZ then yes it's possible, but we don't. A cauliflower cost $10 NZ ($6.39 US), last year. That's why we grow our own vegetables and fruit.

We are also talking about feeding 4 people a "meal". Sorry but I don't agree that sausages and onions in bread a meal. There is no nutrition in that, especially for a male who has a labour-intensive job. Where is the protein? BBQ sauce here in Nz is between $4-5, onions $4 at least, cheapest bread is $1.59 let alone the sausages

sorry Dianne, but here in W>A. we consider a Sausage a great meal for lunch ask anyone to goes to Bunnings every Saturday Morning for a Sausage Sizzle, and obvious you don't look for Coles Labels, and specials, Just Saying

That's okay for a quick snack and it will suffice until dinnertime and people do enjoy sausages but the original question was "a cheap meal for a family of 4". I most certainly live off specials but here in NZ even with a markdown you cannot buy 8 sausages for $4.50 some packs of sausages are $10.99 just for 6, BBQ sauce is $4.99, bag onions $5 so for 4 people are you suggesting that they all have 1 sausage each for a meal. I stand by original opinion here in NZ you cannot feed a family of 4 including 2 adults, one who does manual labour a hearty filling nutritional meal with protein for just $10.00

                                                      • If I thought hard for a while and shopped the specials, particularly meat, I could. Lately with our long rainy season veg prices have become a problem. Use by dates mean you can get good bargains in meat on certain days in the supermarkets. Having pasta and rice at home helps If you live in small regional areas it would be harder.

                                                        • I think you can but it can be extremely hard at the moment. I know I use what we have on hand at home and only shop what we need and menu planning is key to keep your costs down. Always shop in season for fruit and vegetables. We use all our leftovers whether it be as lunches or for the next dinner.

                                                          • You have to look for seasonal vegetables. But you don't buy at supermarkets or fruit shops in shopping malls. You need to buy at a fruit market shop. They ae much cheaper and all states have them. You buy meat on special.and use less per person. You shop for things on special.

                                                            • I have done it plenty of time. There is one dish I make which under $10 is a Middle Eastern Dish which has eggs, onions , spices and a tin of tomatoes or pasta and plain tomatoes with herbs.

                                                              • I've never taken part in a challenge like that, but I do try to cook from scratch as much as possible. Basics like rice, dry beans, potatoes, fresh produce and some meat are great for a budget. Also much healthier then boxed /prepared foods. But, $10 to feed four would be a stretch these days.
                                                                ·
                                                                • The trick is to UNLEARN spending . Use what you have, understand the difference between needs and wants, when shopping, buy seasonal produce, know when items are marked down, understand the sales cycles between different stores, know that buying in bulk in not always a better price or a better option for you personally, not being afraid to try something different, testing cheaper alternative ingredients, substituting expensive name brands for generic, trying food co-ops to share the expenses, growing what you can yourself, cooking double batches of food and freezing, cutting down on meat consumption ( sorry I know people hate that one)… I could keep going, I love this stuff…
                                                                  ·
                                                                  • Yes, it may just be possible to get some food for a family of four for under $10.00, but what do you call food? I'm quite sure there is a lot of junk out there but how bad off do you have to be to buy it? Perhaps you should look into a food bank? They can fix you up for a few days at no cost (except transport to the facility).
                                                                    ·

                                                                      ·

                                                                        ·

                                                                      ·

                                                                        ·

They say every household throws away over $2'000 worth of food a year and all that goes into landfill and it's a lot. We need to buy more carefully that is for sure. We are drowning in waste. Extremely sad really and we should wake up to our selves. Not all of us of course as we hardly waste any thing and especially not food.
                                                                          ·

Mince meat is getting up there but the cheap mince is just as good, just has more fat in it. Then they wonder why people are getting fatter. Mind boggles... Salsas are really good and we have them with rice and a little meat, either chicken, sausages, ham, lamb rump etc etc and reasonable cheap meal. It's about making what you have spread further than ever before. I once watched a program about Americans and trying to keep their children fed and they just had Spaghetti Bol and the children after they had eaten said they were still hungry. That made me feel really sad and the mother hardly eat any thing because there just wasn't enough food to go around. The poor woman was in tears. I guess people face these kind of issues every day and we are lucky we don't have that kind of pressure or stress to worry about. We manage, we always have and we always will.

Some people can consume a lot of food, and others don't eat as much. Also, are they children? Mac and cheese in a box would suffice if you got it on sale and even cook two boxes. I live alone, and I can easily be well-fed for $2.00, but I probably couldn't do it every day without eating the same thing over and over!

But as everything is constantly increasing in price I truly pity those who, like myself, are on a fixed income, but thankfully my children are raised and I now live alone. Trying week after week and month after month to make interesting food that the family enjoys on a budget is going to become increasingly difficult! I'm only grateful that my mother passed down her grandmother's tips on being frugal to me, but unfortunately many today either missed out on those lessons entirely or they just aren't interested in hearing them! Both my girls grew up seeing me head straight to the reduced products or discount ailes and even my almost 18 year old grandson can spot a reduced sticker at a supermarket at 20 paces so there's hope there yet! I'd HATE to be raising small children today though and I do feel for young families who struggle. Thanks for reading.

What if you don't have that item in the cupboard, that must add to the cost of the meal. I can make a meal for four people for absolutely no cost, if I use up what's in the cupboard. As I am sure most of us could.

More I think about - I am beginning to think it can be done (a healthy meal) - it would consist of protein, diary, vegetables, and whole grains - FOOD PYRAMID (USA) - BON APPETIT. However, I am not should 'I' could make a healthy meal under $10 - as I stated in my origin post!
