Discussion of the Day
Security is making my life very frustrating!
Elizabeth T 39609627-Apr-25
With so many product and services that we use, everything is expected to be done online these days, it is getting increasingly frustrating every time you need a password reset. The rules regarding passwords are for our protection, but they are also really counterproductive as it makes it near impossible for us to remember said password when things MUST be a minimum of 8 12 characters, MUST contain at least 1 uppercase letter, MUST contain at least 1 number and MUST contain at least one special character. It also cannot be too similar to something you have had before, and no consecutive numbers or x number or letter too close to y number or letter.
What do you think? Is too much security driving you mad, too?

Fingerprints facial recognition and voice activation should eventually get rid of cumbersome passwords

I totally agree with you Elizabeth, I get so frustrated when I cannot remember my own pass words, and sometimes honestly, places act like they harass us when we cannot remember the pass word, how can we keep up with so many changes on them. I have tried writing them down, have to throw book after book after book away. That is why I cannot remember my own passwords.

What annoys me lately is some of these Cyber criminals are now breaking into bank and super fund accounts regardless of passwords and stealing money. So nothing is sacred or 100% secure.

It is getting worse and those who don't remember things are the losers in this game. It is stopping the wrong people from accessing their own accounts.

OMFG now the bank wants me to take a selfie to prove it is me transferring money from my account to an account I have in another bank which I have been transferring to for years. This bank has an authenticator app (and it was only a small amount) so why on earth did they need a selfie of me when I have done this hundreds of times before (with and without authenticator app approval). The other rampant stupidity is I have also registered voice id (which they also forced me to do) so why didn't they give me an option for what to use instead of just forcing me to take a selfie? FFS it was only a $50 transaction that I have done many times before between the same accounts so I really don't see why this extra security was necessary. I think they just want MORE of our data as the only OTHER option it had that was acceptable was to register my fingerprint.

Don't let your bank know, they won't make good any problems if your passwords are written down.

I use Microsoft's Password Manager (which tends to remember MOST of my passwords), as well as a notebook where I can write down passwords. Still--I HATE passwords. Who can keep changing their passwords and remember them all?
              ·
              • Elizabeth T 396096
Exactly: they remember most but not all and it is usually the one you want them to remember that they won't tell you what it is or it failed to save.

I'm over it, my husband won't bother with them. It's all up to me to remember all of our accounts. You also need a code off your phone or email now with your password. I would perfer the internet to disappear for good.

Amen SIster I absolutely detest the security measures on MyGov, twice I have been locked out entirely requiring a visit to their office because their phone line these days only deals with emergencies with specific questions only. Banks can be just as bad with AI bot who can't understand what you want or are trying to do.

AI bots = anti customer service. They really don't know what you want and can't understand anything as simple as "customer service", "telephone number for customer service" so why should we trust them for something complicated? When I saw the Salesforce ads with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson trying to say humans are too stupid to know how to style people or that they will leave you sitting in the rain when you make a dinner reservation but AI would not do that I was mad, turned off and wondered how an ad like this was allowed with truth in advertising laws as it is OBVIOUS that AI can't do simple things so why on earth would we think it would be smart enough to change a booking? I have had businesses tell me NOT to book via website (even car servicing ones) as the bookings often fail and they are unaware that customers are coming in the first place.

you know I was so angry with the Bot I actually swore in the end and it answered "sorry I don't know that language" which infuriated me even more because it was obvious it did understand I had sworn at it. Made me believe I wasn't the first to have done so.

Not only do we now need a password many places also send a code. That happened to us while we were overseas and unable to receive the code so the bank locked us out of our account and we weren't able to get any money transferred to our currency card or ATM. There can be cases of too much security.

These fancy pants passwords are crazy. My daughter changes her Afterpay password after every purchase and every payment. I liked the days when you went to Aussie Post, bought a cheque, and posted it, same with every bill you had, easier is never easier, I have no idea how people remember these passwords when they are changed so often , i think we need to simplify things not make them more complicated

It's important to have different passwords for different things and in some cases make the password complex, however it's always essential to change passwords so people can't snoop or get in on your private information

Not online and loggin into many websites, So cant help as I am not affected ...... YET.... that time will come when the control tightens, Google Miscrosoft are trying to tighten the control

You would be angry at first, then wonder why wasn't there more protections for my account ? Then you would have to spend who knows how much time to get your ' whatever' back and better protected for the future. having to add numbers or special characters probably would not be as time consuming. Those password protections are put in place for you.

I think we all do. probably a password manager is the way to go, it can't you just see all the scammed out there in this unsafe word trying to hack them. I did an online course many years ago now,I think suggested to me by my bank, on different techniques to select memorable passwords. you go for phrases that having meaning to you but in the process you could use a number 0 instead of the letter o, or you could use ! Instead of i, # instead of h, 3 for e, @ for a. You could make a list of these coded letters at least until you memorise them. An example could be: !l0v3r3ward!@. I hope this helps. I found it to be an enormous help.

Really funny because for one of these I was at work and my coworkers could not work out the difference and they thought I was wrong on my third try (the first two tries were even harder and even though we pretty much agreed what the code said, we were wrong) and on the final try, I said "no, this one is a lower case" and the rest said "doesn't look like it" because the letters were the same size as the upper case ones in the puzzle and I said "no, you can just see the little tip above the p and this is how you would write a lower case p" and I was right. Seriously, that lower case p was the same size as all the upper case letters (which were all slanted, deformed and squashed). Now I have to remember that password for another 4-6 weeks before work mandates I change it and I go through this rotten guess the Microsoft letter number puzzle.🤣

I think many companies go over board with so called security. Seems the ideal of Keep I Simple has gone. Personally I feel if someone is going to hack they will use computer systems that will outsmart any password if they want

When things are too impossible to remember and require too many rules to satisfy password etiquette and on top of this, they mandate changing your password every x weeks or months, what choice do we have but to write them down or take a picture of it (and this is the opposite of security as they can be easily found and used against us). The most secure way seems to be "select forgot my password" and change it every time you log in and never write it down.🤣🤣

You keep the bulk of the password the same so it’s easy to remember, but you don’t write it down, only a hint at the start and the end so you know which of your possibly half dozen standards that you know by memory, but then change around a few bits at the start or the end and just record that.. Much safer..

Now I use a password manager. You only need to remember 2 passwords - one to log in to your device and one to get into the p/w manager and away you go. They auto generate p/ws that take 3000 years to crack. Auto-fill works well with them too. Check out free Dashlane, just one of many.

The only way this will work properly is if there is a ground zero reset of the www where unless yoire registered you simply can't use it and your 2 factor authentication can be biometric with a 22 digit password. If you can't get in then no one else can either What about going into a retail store with cash and doing a little haggling

I only visit three websites where I need a password. I log-in everyday at my three websites; hence, my IP address logs me in (as long as I used my computer at my place of residence every day). Furthermore, I keep all passwords offline (on paper). Is too much security at websites driving me MAD? NO! Is too much advertising (online) driving me CRAZY? YES! However, I am looking forward to the day - I can do 'everything' offline (Yeah! I know - a pipe dream - LOL)!

Glad you only need 3 passwords. I guess your hermit lifestyle precludes anybody from finding said piece of paper which contains your passwords and doing something nasty with them.😁 Why, that is a wonderful dream to be able to CHOOSE to do something offline. These days with companies going more towards bots and ai, I fear there won't be people around to help us when all this tech fails and NOBODY will take responsibility and the engineers won't want to talk to mere mortals to solve problems.
