Do you miss hard copy catalogues?
Chin C14-May-22
Since Christmas, I no longer received a hard copy of Woolworths catalogue in my letterbox. Whilst I agree with the environmental benefits of not wasting papers, I do miss seeing the hard copy. I know I can go online to look at the weekly specials, like what I have done with Coles for the last 12 months, I find that I actually stopped going to both supermarkets. In the past, the specials in the catalogue would be the main factor for me deciding which supermarket to visit for that week. Now it's out of sight, out of mind. I tend to just go to my greengrocer to buy fruit and vegetables. I only search the online catalogue when I am low in some supplies and checking to see if they are on special. Anyone else feels the same as me?

I go to the websites to have paper copies mailed to me.

You can actually have them emailed to you separately. When I know I will be going shopping to check them via the emails I receive. It has happened a lot more since covid as people don't want to handle them to deliver them.. I know Coles have always had hard copies at the entrance of their supermarkets. We don't have a local greengrocer since covid restrictions started. A lot of businesses have closed. They can't afford the rent etc. to re-open.

Yes, I miss the catalogues and I do find I shop less. Kmart, Target, Best N Less all gone, and the emails just aren't the same. I receive an email, go to look then spend ages looking and looking, it's a waste of time. I much prefer to go through the catalogue to see what's available then go in and buy it. I can't be bothered sitting searching for something to spend my money on.

No, I don't. I was never one for catalogues, really. I used to use them to line my ferret's cage. I have migrated online, have been for a while now.

Why would you want to have hard copy specials just to throw them in a bin…cutting down trees to make copies to start with…then make a dye to colour these pamphlets…don’t we have enough rubbish & pollution on this beautiful planet…to cut down trees only weakens the ozone layer…aren’t we trying to prevent this…say no to pamphlets…have an awesome day…

We still get them in our letterbox in South Australia but not the Coles ones. I don't have any issue with checking the catalogues online and we always go through the Coles one on their website. If the others stop doing hard copies it wouldn't bother me.

Delivering paper catalogues was slave labour! Way below the minimum hourly rate, sore back from carrying heavy catalogues. Pay wasn't worth the petrol to deliver by car, not even to take the car to a central point and walk from there. And the time I tore fibres in a leg muscle while out delivering? Halfway round the route, couldn't get home quickly so more wear and tear on the injury. And the cost of physio to heal the muscle was probably a year's catalogue delivery pay... Was also not amused to have political party flyers handed to me with no notice two days before an election and asked to deliver them - 5 hours' walking and mudslinging content, no proper statement of policies. Apart from all that, catalogue delivery did keep me reasonably fit with all the walking.

Having said that, our normal weekly Aldi one seems to have stopped but I assume that's as a result of supply issues - particularly with their 'Special Buys', and that the catalogues will return when this is resolved.

When it comes to Grocery Shopping there is still a bit of competition going on between them - and yes, those from Aldi compare Aldi's prices for Aldi's House Brands with the prices of National Brands at the other Supermarkets which is blatantly Dishonest (a bit like our politicians) as the others also have their own House Brands - some of which incidentally are the same price but for More content or a lower price for the same content. Before we go shopping for groceries we like to see what all are offering and we can't do that unless we have a PC or a Printed Catalogue delivered which we can read at no cost. Woolworths does have theirs delivered to the house, Coles does not and Shame on Coles for not doing so.

They are relaxing to look over, they give my eyes a break from screens, I can use them for cleaning windows, and they are biodegradable. A big benefit: you can often see all the specials sooner than online, better for planning. When I lived in apartments, I got cranky when the stacks of junk mail would be removed asap by one of the residents. These day I sometimes take them from apartment blocks that have excess, but more often have to resort to online or actually going to the supermarket for my hard copy.

If I am out of something I buy it regardless. As I walk around the supermarket specials are highlighted. If I really want to know prior to shopping I can always go on-line to check. At least we are saving a few trees without the catalogues.

If it weren't for catalogues, the people before my time, and I'm 74, wouldn't have had anything to clean themselves with after they used the outhouse! Yes, catalogues were used before toilet paper was produced! No, thank you. I guess they used leaves before catalogues? ;-I ? I miss looking through all of the pages of all of the catalogue items for sale...

They are beautiful works that I miss. They are also stacks of paper that had to be regularly thrown out and so it is for they greater good that I let them go. ??

I miss them and intensely dislike trying to use the electronic variety.

I check out the online catalogue for both Coles & Woolies and make up my shopping list and on the day I do go shopping I go to both Coles & Woolies, but also Aldi. I have particular items I prefer from each and they are all very convenient for me to get to from my home. I don't have to shop every week but if there is an item that is on sale that I would normally buy in my regular shop I will go and stock up on it.

Either way is pretty useless these days due to product shortages. I got an email from Woolies the other day and went straight down to buy cat food...nope not only did they not have any variety of the brand advertised, they had only a few cans of other brands...empty shelves and wasted petrol once again!
