Voting Age
Lyn A.24-Nov-22
What is the voting age in your country, and is it compulsory to vote?
In New Zealand at the moment, there's a push to lower voting age from 18 to 16 years
It has been stated "it's against human rights not to lower the age" wish someone could explain that one to me!!

  • In Australia it is 18 and compulsory. The only change I would make is to have it voluntary. I would still vote and at least if for some reason I did not, I would be happy that I would not be getting fined for not voting.

    • I think the United States you have to be 21 and older to vote.
      ·
      • In the U.S. it should be 21, and mandatory armed service duty of a minimum of two years or you can't vote until you're 31.
        ·
        • Voting age needs to be legal adult age.
          ·
          • I thought it was 18 or 21 in America, but it should stay where it is. I truly believe that if it isn't broken, don't go tryin to fix it, or change it. I don't hear our young people crying out that the age to vote is too old. They just seem to accept the age it is. Of course there's always the select few that challenge anything just to be rebellious, especially as a young adult. But leave the voting age alone, it's worked for a long time and will continue to!

Let's have an adult civil conversation about the voting age. I know we can do it in a respectful, thoughtful, caring manner.

            • Candy what is that supposed to mean? I even know how to use punctuation, like question marks. I said in my comment to your original statement some believe it is broken because you said if it isn't broken don't fix it. If people had this backward way of thinking we would still be riding in horse drawn carriages and cooking on open fires. The way things get changed is from time to time re-evaluate what is happening and then maybe decide that there are better ways to do things. Voting right now is one of those things

yes, true, times change and we adapt, but where I'm from I stay up on my political news and no one here is talking about the voting age being an issue. It's more of an issue that our ballot counting and system of voting is broken and that's what needs fixed. Our voting age is not being disputed by anyone. We, for the greater part, agree that the voting age is right on at 21 yrs. So we need to work on the issues we do believe are needing addressed, and we are certainly addressing them. Not quite sure why your jumping down my throat!! What's an issue for your country isn't necessarily one in mine. So????????????????

            • Hi Candy, I believe you first mention the voting age in your comments or questions back at the beginning of this conversation, that's why I raised it in my reply. Aside from that, why do you think I'm jumping down your throats. Could it be because I may have a different opinion than you? How do you know what country I am from to suggest we have different rules and regulations regarding voting?
              ·
          • Hi Lyn. I can try to explain it for you. The younger you are, the more likely you are to vote with your heart and not your head! So agendas like equality, workers rights, the environment etc, all sound like things you should be behind. Later in life you work out that "it's the economy stupid", and vote "right wing". The lower the voting age, the more votes for demorats/labour/greens/red shirts etc. It has nothing to do with "human rights", it"s another method of ballot harvesting by the left! (It's harder to encourage illegal immigration on islands like NZ and AUS, as it is with land borders like Mexico.), so lets lower the voting age instead!

            • Should they be able to totally support themselves with no help from their parents or the Government then that is fine by me. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility, not a toy.

              • The voting age is 18 in the USA! It is NOT compulsory to vote in USA. However, some states (USA) make it very difficult for minorities to vote! FYI: It was not the young (too young to vote) that voted Trump into office. It was not the young (too young to vote) that caused climate change - it was the old (relative term) and greed (capitalism) that caused climate change!

              • YEP its also against human rights to breathe. In Aust it is 18 and compulsory. though if you dont want to vote, you need to get yourself marked of and deliver a blank voting sheet. 16 is too young, but Ardern is busy trying to please her WEF handlers, she is promoting a global vaccine passport, The horse need to be coralld

                • The age to vote is 18, drink is 21, drive a car is 16. No to lowering voting age. 16 is too young and immature.
                  ·
                  • 18 to drink...18 to go to war and maybe die....18 to drive a car....and 18 to vote too...
