Living in extreme weather regions
Kylie H26-Jun-21
What are your thoughts on people who live in places that experience extreme weather situations like regular flooding, tornado / cyclones, monsoonal weather, lots of snow?
Do YOU live in an area that experiences any of these types of weather events?

I think extreme weather events are global now so it doesn't matter where you live.

There is sure a change in the weather events that have been occurring in different areas of our world. One minute there are massive fires getting fought by brave firemen and women, animals getting badly injured or deceased because of these, homes getting burnt and others coming close, heaps of evacuations to safer buildings with minimal possessions, then there are the floods that just come from nowhere and next minute towns are flooding with people have to be removed from their homes as well and dont know when they will get back to them. We really need to do as much as is possible to firstly cut down on climate change and get on top of it all together.

I do not believe that governments don't do something about drainage in these areas, I feel so sorry for these people that get caught up in these floods, and natural disasters, esp. if they are not insured. I would never live in a place like this

Many areas in NSW used to flood regularly every year or so until the Councils put in flood mitigation areas and stooped the problems of houses being flooded and shifting off their foundations. But every time humans change the surrounding area it will cause another effect elsewhere. I agree thoroughly with your researching any area you are thinking of buying into - also check whether any mitigation has also been done. As far as climate change is concerned, the climate is reacting violently to too many people being currently upon this earth and all of them breathing out carbon dioxide while removing trees to grow food. It is the simplest denominator that is the problem here.

tree-surrounded housing estates are lovely to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I do live very near the beach (on coast) area. It was actually blowing a real gale last week - thought my roof was going to come off. Some people, not too far from me, actually did lose their verandah! (=front porch)

I personally don't think it's got anything to do with extreme poverty. I know flood plains, swampy areas, old tip sites, etc have been purchased by (overseas) developers and entire estates built- now these properties are cracking and/or sinking within years of being built and residents (most families i assume) are new to the area or know nothing of the land's history and then getting very upset when their brand new home starts getting damaged. I know this is happening in Western Sydney... It would not surprise me if it is also happening in other parts of Australia and even other countries. My hubby & I hope to eventually buy a home of our own; I have already started researching areas, checking old news articles for stories of floods, fires, etc, checking new articles with flood and fire risk fratings, plans, etc. If you do a little bit of research, anyone will find that this information is available to the public. Surely this information should help people make an informed decision on what areas is safe to buy in?

It doesn't matter where you live as there is always some risk. Weather is only one of the risks. Volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, rock falls, forest fires to name some things.

I think I would check it all out before I moved, I would prefer to live in an area which was not prone to such events which would mean all those Under-funded Emergency Service (SES, Rura,Country Fire svcs) would be able to concentrate on those areas which could be affected but cannot be left unused or uninhabited.

This is where things get difficult. Extreme Weather Areas can be extremely large areas that impact everyone there. For instance North QLD experiences Cyclones which can come down the coast to Brisbane on occasion so it's virtually the entire state. Where the real problems are is when you get Pollies who refuse to believe that Climate Change id happening and refuse to do anything about it. The Insurance Companies on the other hand know exactly what is going on and fix prices accordingly so not it is quite often all but impossible to get any Insurance Cover particularly for Fire or Flood. Of course the Pollies getting greedy and selling land that floods to people doesn't help at all which is what has happened in Townsville where major developments have happened on what was once Crown Land and the Market has got away with building Mansions in areas that regularly flood. So people come look at the Nice New House and do not realise that within 20 years it is likely that a flood so high has happened and the house has been completely submerged. Developments like that should never be allowed and if they are the Crown should be forced to buy the land back at the current price prior to the flood and clear the land then leave it as flood plain and never sell it to developers again. Things like that Political Corruption are far too common in this country and all involved need to be punished for their actions in achieving it. If there was a push to remove all population centres in areas that are hit by Flood, Fire, Cyclone, Blizzard, Monsoons there would be very little of Australia populated and vast areas left unpopulated. Even then how often do you call it a Regular Event. Sure once every 5 years tends to be quick to get to and sort out the criminals who have profited from this but a once in a 100 year event is a different story. Still a common event but it doesn't happen often in a single person's lifetime but often enough to know that it's going to. Should Tully be removed from the MAP as they get over 1.5 metres of rain per year and while it is very wet up there floods are not regular. Actually in answer to "Do YOU live in an area that experiences any of these types of weather events?" Everyone in Australia does to some extent be that Drought, floods or something else every place in Australia is somehow affected by there Weather Events so do we need to move elsewhere and leave the place empty? I've seen instances where "Flood Proof Bridges" have been built only to be underwater a week after their opening or dams like the Burdekin Dam which was going to take many years to fill up but had 1 metre of water over the top of the wall in under 18 months. A bit of flash flooding but nothing major and the dam was full much quicker than expected. I've seen Police Cars washed away at bridges underwater which have been left on the road near the water to stop anyone attempting to cross and then only an hour after parking the car there the water has risen and the car disappeared and it was left 20 foot above the water when it was parked. As all of Northern AU can be hit by Cyclones I doubt that anyone is claiming that it should remain unpopulated or developed so is it thought that places like Mt Isa or the Pilbara should be shut down because a Cyclone could come through and blow away buildings not to mention bring enough rain to flood the place for weeks at a time? The reality however is that every place in Australia gets impacted by Extreme Weather it is just a matter of degree that it is affected. The house my father had built at Camp Hill has never been flooded but it has had water run off work it's way in at times and it has been isolated many times from other parts of Brisbane because of flooding but it's never been flooded as such. However you may not be able to get out of the suburb for a few days when those once in 100 year floods happen. The daughter also is regular flooded in not because she has any water anywhere near her house but the roads within 2 or 3 KMS of her house do go underwater and are not passable so she and her hubby can be isolated for up to a week so far but generally it's from a few hours to a couple of days. Doesn't even get her feet wet but she also can not get any food into the house or get out of the immediate area she lives.

Many of the people who live in these zones are trapped by work, family , traditional homelands etc and moving not an option. Local councils should be encouraging residents to fortify against local weather hazards. Most people need to be “nudged” to change attitudes

Everywhere can experience extreme weather conditions. What you should do to minimise your experience with extreme weather is to make sure you don't live on the edge of either a cliff or on the beach very close to the sea. Don't purchase land on a flood plain or in the middle of the bush. However, like most people when I saw the house I really wanted all of the above went out the window.

Nature is hinting that we use our common sense and uproot them as, make use of them and plant others in their place. Also do not build on flood plains as Nature has the right of way, there are plenty of other choices for erecting our shelters!

Some people build their homes on stilts incase floods should occur. I think I would like my home to be on stilts. As for the trees often the Council do no allow trees to be chopped down. Strange how they can decide this and yet trees can kill if it lands on them. Any safety issues should always be looked into and be allowed to have them removed. I do not like too many trees about the spiders alone would make me cringe each time I walked out of my home especially in the night when they all like to come out.
