Gardening to save money
06-Jul-22
With the raising prices in the grocery store, I feel that more people are starting a garden this year, Even it's just a salad garden or a tomato plant, it will save you money and taste better.
Comments
  • I usually do it, I guess it saves a bit of money. Doesn't cost me anything because I get the plants at Mitre 10 with vouchers from here or other survey sites
    ·
    • If I have garden in my backyard then I will start to plant different kinds of vegetables and it helps my expenses and very important for me for a living.
      ·
      • I discovered a self-sown cherry tomato seedling growing in my garden when I returned home after the Xmas holidays. It started to fruit just when prices started getting crazy, and has inspired me to try growing more of my own food.

        • Gardening has saved me lots of money over the last few years. Ginger, anyone?
          ·
          • I started my own veggie supply 17years ago, it's great to go out and pick what I need and not be forced to buy what the shops have packed, but during summer the water bill gets a little high, but all worth it, at least nothing goes of in my fridge 2days after I bought it
            ·
            • I used to grow a lot of vegies and you are correct it does save money but more importantly the taste of home vegies cannot be beaten. I am going to restart my vegie patches when the whether decides to cooperate and if you can attract bees to you garden the better
              ·
              • why not try a local boycott at the local supermarket. if all the locals stopped buying at 1 supermarket they would soon drop their inflated prices
                ·
                • l try growing tomatoes but l either forget them or l over water and drown them
                  ·
                  • Something a lot of people forget with regards to saving money gardening is that unless you harvest your own water then it is not free…
                    ·
                    • Having had a veggie garden I disagree. Too much rain and the lettuce turns to seed, the tomatoes all ripen at the same time just when tomatoes are at their cheapest and if the snails don't get them the birds do. I have a lemon tree, grapefruit, plum, macadamia, persimmon as well rhubarb, mint, figs, parsley, a lime tree and cape gooseberries that pop up everywhere. We have to have our fruit trees pruned each year then try to keep the bats, birds and fruit flies away and keep the cockies off the macadamias. I would hate to be a farmer because it is soul destroying when you put time and effort in but get nothing. In short, it's the supermarket for us.

                        • Never had success before so don't think will now
                          ·
                          • Hi Margaret. Do you use any special type of fertilizers for your tomatoes. I have only tried to grow them outside and had no luck in growing them Not sure what I am doing wrong so thought I would try the greenhouse this year. At least your rabbits are eating well.
                            ·
                            • We grow what we can ourselves and often grows lettuces in pot's where you just pick the leafs and they just grow more. We also grow potatoes and carrots yams tomatoes in pot's and sometimes grow vegetables in among the flower garden too. We have rhubarb blueberries red and black currants growing too as well as 2 plum trees. I make my own jam and try not to waste anything we also have quite a few herbs growing in the flower garden too. You don't need to have a large area to grow a few bits and pieces and nothing tastes better than eating your own produce. We also make our own natural seaweed plant food, it may be a bit smelly but at least we know what's in it and the plants love it.

                              • We battle bats, birds, snails and fruit fly. However, we did get a good crop of persimmons this year, otherwise the "natives" eat well.

Yes they're very good at swiping the blueberries too but I guess that they have to eat just like us.

                            • Have always grown veges - at the moment have peas, spring onions, red onions, leeks, baby cauliflowers, purple garlic, carrots (diff colours), capsicums, tomatoes (diff ones) and lots herbs. Love gowing veges - but different bugs and rats are a problem. Also have apple tree, mulberry tree, lime and lemon and orange trees, and fig tree.

                                    • I started gardening about 15 years ago and now most of my family, friends and neighbors get what I grow and they give me what they grow. It is very rewarding and cheap.

                                          • I like the idea of growing food but find it can become expensive with cost of seedlings, potting mix if you rent, pots fertiliser, water and so on

                                                • it is not just the economical aspect of growing one's fruit and vegetables, it is the freshness, being able to pick them when needed and knowing that chemicals have never been used on or around them ... it just becomes a part of life

I haven't noticed a huge increase in the supplemental fruit and veggies we have to buy but we don't expect to be buying summer fruits in winter.

But not everyone is born with a gardening/farming gene.. If you are not get together with some neighbours and have a community garden you dont need a lot and there are plenty of vids on utube from every country to give you some great ideas if you only have a patio or very small yard.... And if you do shared, you also have the health benefit of socialising and learning something new, it may not be actual gardening itself but it will be associated and its amazing what people find out about themselves, with gardening, knitting etc. Blessings and if new have before start small.

With my mum, we planted mandarin, peach, plum and apple trees. We had a garden we redug up and replanted every summer so that in the winter time, we had plenty of corn, silver beet, carrots, tomatoes and cabbages. It is a fantastic way to keep fit and to exercise. A garden is a MUST.

Currently have pumpkins, potatoes, kumera, tomatoes, rhubarb, blueberries, avocado, grapes, blackberries, pineapples, and herbs. Usually have enough to share with family and friends. Make a delicious tomato chutney which everyone adores especially my son in law! Had an abundance of cherry tomatoes one year so my sister took a big bowl to a mediaeval feast she was catering and people were asking where she got the ‘real’ tomatoes!

Also liked the idea of using coleslaw on a burger instead of lettuce, which we have done and it was a nice change too. Coleslaw was home made of course.

I do the same with the ones in the fridge, they last fresh longer.

Nothing tastes better or is better for you than veggies.

Once this rain stops I need to get outside and weed my garden. I don't have as much as you but I grow as much as I can and preserve whatever is available to do so. When rationing starts and people realise that there's not going to be enough food for everyone there'll be food riots, which are already happening around the Middle East and Asia and Africa. It will be us next. I predict September will be a HUGE wake up call for American's and by December TPTB won't be even trying to hide what they've done. There WILL be rioting and stealing of whatever food can be found so make sure yours is safely cached somewhere in different areas. I'm VERY serious about that! I would suggest you go to "Adapt 2030" on YouTube or "Ice Age Farmer" over on Bitchute. Both these channels woke me up to what was actually happening around the world to CREATE a global famine. It's absolutely heartbreaking what is just over the horizon and truly evil! Take care now and please get your supplies somewhere safe!

Things were starting to get a bit better with some things but now with the latest lot of floods here in Aus, a lot of us will just have to get out and grown our own.

My son made a gardenbed for me, I had lots of parsley, tomatoes, basil, till I planted eggplant...it took over the whole space, killed everything, no fruit on it. Now I got rid of it, plan to plant parsley, tomatoes, garlic, etc. I gave parsley to all of my neighbors, not everybody likes parsley so I will plant less. It’s a learning process for me. Yes, saving money and much healthier!

It's very nutritious, great blended into a green juice and a wonderful seasoning for a lot of different meals and it's good for you. It's anti inflammatory and you can always dry what you don't need and vacuum seal it into 20gm lots or larger and it will last years. Keep going with your garden because at least you'll be eating while others aren't! Seriously, keep planting what you can except for your eggplant! Herbs are great as well as anything that can be canned, bottled, dried or used as a homemade medicine. Plant onions to use for cold relief, garlic for immunity and you'll be amazed at what herbal preparations you can make from your garden! Good luck.

Plus you don't need to remember what you'd grown where as potatoes and tomatoes close to each other or in the same soil don't mix. Old bathtubs or those twin concrete laundry tubs make for good herb patches.

A few minutes of research will put you ahead of the game and allow you to get the seeds you really want before they disappear. Good luck!

He had REALLY green fingers and I can remember him going outside to chop up his lunch. He always grew radhiccio and ate it for lunch with onions, salt and pepper, balsamic vinegar and olive oil and he lived to be 97! He'd also break up a couple of slices of bread into the mix to mop up the juices but it certainly helped him to get to the age he got! BTW, I have a cat called Claude, he is 2 and so does my middle son and his partner. Your name must be growing in popularity! Have a nice day!
