Elections - do you vote?
Kamila P22-Oct-23
NZ had recently General elections. Turns out, similar as previous years, not everyone go to vote. Yet there are lots of people who complain afterwards. I always say election is the time when people actually do have a 'voice' and might be able to make a difference in their country, but about 20 to 25% will choose not to vote. I bet those are the people who complain the most. Do you think elections really should be compulsory or leave the citizens the option to choose?

  • No voting should not be made compulsory. People should be allowed to chose.Wether to vote or not. If they don't vote they shouldn't complain

    • I voted😊
      ·
    • Voting is mandatory in Aus and not a option. If everyone thought like you then nothing would be achieved.
      ·
    • Actually people do not have to vote and they just get their name crossed off. People can still vote informal if they want. You are stupid or what?
      ·
  • That is 100% correct
    ·
    • Absolutely!
      ·
      • Absolutely not. I always vote, but do not want the gov't to start saying people have to vote. Too much "nanny state" interference as it is.
        ·
        • I voted, you can't complain about the government if you never voted!
          ·
          • Why wouldn't you. You give them your tax and therefore you have the right choose who is going to spend it. Not that they ever listen to you !!!
            ·
            • I always vote, thankful to live in a country where it's safe for all to vote freely.
              ·
              • I vote every election. We have to make our democracies work!
                ·
                • Voting should be optional, but don’t complain if you don’t vote! We vote in every election, even the “small “ ones.
                  ·
                  • Not compulsory
                    ·
                    • Yes. Democracy is about choice so voting should not be compulsory.
                      ·
                      • all ways no vote no say

                          ·
                          • I don't vote.

                            • I always vote and yes, I do believe it should be compulsory for the citizens of the country, just like jury duty is. We all have an obligation to do at least the minimum for our society.
                              ·
                              • Yes, voting should be compulsory and with ID to avoid any duplication. This is the only time that the people have a say...

                                • hi TY Warren D...

                                    • Do I vote? YES (always)! However, in the 'ideal' society (on this planet - HAHA) compulsory voting (would be the law) which 'would/should' create more awareness of societal issues (by voters) and increase voters participation rates!

                                                  • If you don't think your vote matters, consider that you are making it easier for perhaps a candidate you wouldn't want to achieve a majority of the votes. Fifty-one percent of a small number is so much easier to achieve .

                                                      • Most of us have ancestors who faced oppression in some way - often horrific. There are people in the world now who are fighting in the hopes that their countries, & their children will one day be free. I was lucky to be born in a free country with the right to vote. I value this right & privilege, so I give my choice much thought. I don't believe voting should be compulsory because too many time-wasters submit donkey votes. A free citizen should value their right to vote enough to WANT to do it.

                                                            • As the late great George Carlin, American comedian, said it is those who voted are responsible for the outcome and those who didn't should have the right to complain as they are not responsible. That is of course a joke. I do believe everyone should vote. It is a privilege to vote and thousands died to get us the right to vote. If you lived in China or Russia you might feel different about voting.

                                                                  ·

Maybe I won't make a difference but if enough do vote then collectively we can. You are probably right, the non voters will probably be the biggest whingers. However, I believe 1 vote = 1 count. Not happy with the seats and definitely not taking my vote and putting it to their preference.
                                                                            ·

I think it's good to have our say in a democracy and if you don't... then maybe you just don't care how your country is run. You should tho as it can affect your life for better or worse. I think there are a lot of idiot voters in Australia, esp among women and those under 30. Leftards who vote for bad leaders, like prime minister, albenese. Grrr. I bet some are wishing now they hadn't. With the poor state of the economy. Too many uneducated voters who don't understand politics well enough in Australia.
                                                                              ·

We live in a democracy where we are allowed to vote, which I am VERY thankful for; that same democracy gives jerks the freedom to decide they'd rather not vote and then complain to everyone who will listen. Inhale. Exhale.

If your preference is healthy people then why not negate the over 60's or the under 21's, or people not born here although they have become citizens. The list goes on. In a democracy every citizen over the age of 18 till they depart this earth have the right to vote as it should be.
