Would You Ever Change Your Name?
Susan 126530220-Oct-24
I have always disliked my name, Sierra, and I would love to change it. But my family would be upset, so I never pursued the legal name change.
How about you? Would you like to change your name, and if so, what name would you prefer to use?

  • Hated my family name and changed it as soon as I could. I have never spoken it since and good riddance to everyone associated with it!

                • When I was born, I was named Terry Ruth. It didn't bother me until Grade 6 when a boy named Terence joined the class. The teacher called him Terry and my world changed. I HAVE A BOY'S NAME!!! It bothered me that my parents did that to me. A couple of years later, a classmate's younger sister started school but her spelling was Terri. I liked that so much better than my 'boy's name'. I sometimes got mail for Mr. Terry and was reminded for years of my parents' bad judgment. Finally, in one day THREE things happened where I was called Mr., "has he been here before?", and received an offer for a deal on Field & Stream magazine. ENOUGH!! I finally changed the spelling to Teri; like Teri Garr. I liked her as an actor and figured I can make it like her rather than the 'normal' Terri. Yes, it still sounds the same, but in my head I know they're saying it with the correct spelling. That was nearly 30 years ago and it was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. What a difference to my self-esteem to have the female spelling of my name; no more being mistaken for a Mr. or a he:)

                            • Hi Susan, like you I dislike my name, I bare a name that has been handed down from First Born Daughter, to next first born daughter, on my Dad's side, my Nanna passed away 5months before I was born, so like it or not I was stuck with my name " Imperia" which had been the name of 34 other woman first born, before me, I was so upset that I told Dad that I can't keep going with a name no one can pronounce little own spell, so he told me that, If I waited till I was 21 he will let me shorten it, which will allow me to use the last part of my name and will include my Mums short cut name, So I agreed, but when I asked how it will work, he said " we will call you Pierina", when I started to think about it, and when I turned 21 I set out to change my name, was so happy however it soon changed to a total war at the registry office, cause I told Dad can I drop the Rina part, and he said No, But in a way he won, Once I got married mu Husband called me Pier, and that stuck and when my kids came along and started to do things to suit themselves, they called me Cookie... their mates called me Cook, then my husband was being called Fred and my name changed to cookie Fred, My grandkids call me Nanna Cookie, and my Great grandson calls me G.G, for great Granma. So changing names did not work, besides I don't care these days, cause I answer to whatever name I'm called,

I think it stupid but it is custom and a lot follow this out of respect. Your story is uncomfortable to me. You were 21 and old enough to then choose your own name. The rest of the names your called are quite disrespectful. Stand up and tell them to stop but maybe it is a joke now.????

                              • I take it you understand other countries customs, and in my family the names I get called are all in gest, we all have nic names, the one I laugh about is the G.G. he's 3 and I have and Idea it's my son His POP, that chose it, cause when I said " T.T, I am not a horse horses are GGs, I am nanna, he had a quick reply .." No. Nan is Nanna, you G>G," as you said in our Nationality it is a respected tradition, 21 or not, I had all my rallies disgusted at me cause if I did not like my Name I was disrespecting my Grandma

                                                • I've always loved my first name, but my last name was so common that I was happy to change it when I got married. Ironically, I married a man whose surname was Smith! LOL We divorced, and I remarried an Australian man. Sometimes, people ask me if I'm related to someone with the same surname. Of course, I am not and neither is my ex-husband since he was Australian, and his stepfather adopted him, so it isn't HIS last name! His original name was Zukaskis. Thank god, his stepfather adopted him. My dilemma is while I was married to my first husband, we had our tombstone set beside my parents. I thought it was a great idea to put "Smith" on the back of the stone; it was not! When I die, my tombstone will say "Smith" on the back while that isn't my name. Besides that, he was cremated and is NOT buried there even though his name is on it. I still love him, and I don't mind his last if it was my name. The company I bought the stone from said they would have to put a plate on the back showing my current name which I hate because my second husband is an idiot and a liar! My maiden name is common, but I am very proud of it since I've done genealogy for over fifty years! The problem is that changing it would affect everything I've done since 1998! Any suggestions? Now, if I didn't like my first name, I would try and explain to my family how much I don't like it, and that it will be with me for a lifetime! Hopefully, they would understand. I know whoever named you will be upset and hurt that they named you something you dislike. I have a niece named Ciara, and I love that name. It has become rather common, but the choice should be up to you if it bothers you that much. You didn't give your age, but I assume you are fairly young. It would be odd for a while, but people would get used to it. Being younger, you wouldn't have as much to change as I would if I changed mine. That's one good thing. For a while, I thought I would name my child Kendall which could be spelled many ways. Now I like the name Garnet which has an older feel, but older names are back. The choice is yours in my opinion. Best of luck! Let us know what you decide. *wink*

However, my last name has changed legally twice due to marriages. My mom has never liked her first name, so she goes by her middle name but has never legally changed it. BTW: my youngest granddaughter is named Sierra and my daughter in law chose the name because it reminds her of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and that brings her peace.

You can put the feelers out and discuss this with your family and see how they will react - once again your decision. I changed my Christian name when I was in my twenties and I told no-one in my family what I had done, including my mother for whom I was named after, because this was my decision and noone else's. I told my family bit by bit over the years about the name change and how much I hated the name and the reason being that my birth name brought back way too many bad memories for me that I could not deal with. I only have one brother who refuses to call me by my legal name, he continues to call me by my birth name, which is fine by me, that's his choice. I have never demanded or asked anyone in my family to call me by my legal name, I have left that decision up to them, it's not my place to make that choice for them.

My friend's young daughter has made the move back again from the tweenies years of being a trans boy. Now 17 she's back to female and so glad she hadn't taken any blockers. Her name change remains though as it's a gender neutral one and it's nothing like her original name given to her from her grandma who has now passed sadly. Everybody makes their own little journey.... some to our confusion ... and that's okay 😊😊

Some people call me Jennifer which isn't my name and I tell them so. Sierra is such a pretty name and is different, unique. It is a Spanish word for saw or mountain range meaning is strength and stability originates from the Galicia and Asturias regions. Very interesting and if you really wanted to change your name and you talked to your family they would understand but it is so lovely and I think yes you may have had problems with your name but it is yours and you should embrace it. Isn't it what makes you unique and interesting?

The only thing I don't like is people shortening it to Mel. I never had that until I was 22 and now people just think they can call me that. My full name is Melissa-Jane and I must admit I don't like the Jane part. When I was growing up I was mainly called Meliss which I like. Even when I'm introduced as Melissa they think they can automatically call me Mel. I now kindly remind them I'm not Mel.

Much as I get annoyed with people who call me Elaine, Arline, or Ellen, I am proud because I regard Eileen as a beautiful Irish name and I carry on the memory of the beautiful Aunt I never met.

Anyway, I've changed my name several times. So do what you feel like doing. It's going to be you using it anyway, so go for it!

Although she was keeping her name just changing the spelling since she didn't like it. Still my mom changed her name, it had a little simalarity to in but was a lot different. A names a name a lifes a life, you just live with it. So if you really don't like it make nick name soak in to every one, it's just a part of your life. As I see others saying it is very expensive to change, thats just part of life too. So if it will make you feel better go ahead, but if you don't want to pay for it in these times of cost of living crises then wait.
