Discussion of the Day

I spent the day at the VA hospital (Veterans Health Administration) in Boston yesterday with a friend who was having surgery and couldn t believe how clean it was and how kind and friendly everyone was. I was very impressed with their patient board which kept track of the stages he was in our veterans should always be treated with dignity.

That's excellent. We have fairly good health care in Australia but sometimes the wait list for surgery seems to take forever to get seen to. Yes definitely our veterans nead the best care.

I am getting on in age, I have had cancer (9 years ago) and I trust our Medicare system. I have always been treated with respect, dignity and kindness.

My husband is always treated with dignity and respect. The VA doctors are so much more friendly. I even had a Surgeon walk me to my car because it was after dark and my husband was his last patient. They outsourced us to cancer specialists and saved his life. And the hospital is a friendly place. We are in Phoenix, Arizona. One of my favorite things is a Native American man who sits on the upper deck and plays such beautiful flute music. It echoes through the hallways.

Wow better than what we get here in the way of health care. We have been very disappointed with ours, I went to a hospital in Toowoomba and the nurses were complaining about not being paid properly in front of me as I waited to go into surgery. The thing that worries me is yes apparently Toowoomba is getting a new hospital but for goodness sake Please get a better management in there and do not use the old one because they have failed us all miserably sadly. Hubby has issues too and thanks goodness he is still alive but he had to go to the PA hospital because Toowoomba can't do what that hospital can do. Which we all should be asking why not?????? It's the closest large hospital and yet the PA can organise an x-ray for 6 months time but the hospital can only organise one in a few months before the appointment and claim people have been waiting up to 2 years for an x-ray as if that is some thing to be proud of. So shameful and I just hope we never get that sick that we need to go back again at least for awhile any way that is for sure.

The VA Hospital isn't in Australia it is Boston USA. Successive Federal, State and Territory Governments in Australia have been deliberately starving Australia's entire Health System of fundes for decades. It doesn't matter if they are from the Right or Left of politics. The Federal Government only wants to sqwuander untold hundreds of billions on Armaments and other Military equipment to "Protect Australia from foreign invasion" - they never actually tells us whom it is who is threatening Australia. The totally absurd thing about all this squandering of all that money, yes I know it is minuscule compared to the US and China, is that all of this equipment will be completely obsolete before any of it actually becomes operational! These absurd governments - since when does a country with just 26 million people need ONe Federal, 6 State & 2 Territory Governments? All are now hell-bent on squandering even more billions on Space Exploration! As if they haven't, along with all the rest of the World's Politicians, made a big enough mess of our World without doing the same to others. Spend all that money on Housing, Health and Education and stop warmongering. It is our Politicians and Religious Leaders who have been, and still are, responsible for All the Wars which have ever been waged. Decent, Honest, Ordinary people want no part of those wars, yet they are the ones who are sent out to fight and die for the wars the politcians have deliberately, and are at present trying to create.

Not to mention the money that is being wasted on an AFL stadium in Tasmania and the Commonwealth games in Victoria - nobody else wanted the latter so the Victorian idiot decided to make our debt even worse

Our Health care system in Australia hasn’t had enough money to replace nursing or admin staff as they leave, for many years now. It is expected that those that are left will work twice as hard and do unpaid overtime. It has been a well known fact that our hospital staff have extremely hard in the past, with an awful lot walking away because of burn out. Australia is now trying to encourage nursing staff to migrate to Australia to fill the gaps. Not good enough State and Federal Governments!

I'm glad that your friend got the treatment that he needed, also that he was treated with kindness and respect. I have been in hospital for replacement surgery & emergency surgery over the years in a public hospital. I have been fortunate to have the same surgeon for the replacement surgery so I have built up trust in that surgeon. I must admit that all my surgeries have been done at the local hospital which is a public one & cannot complain about the service that I got from not only the nurses but the doctors as well.

Very good to hear of a positive experience, whether the patient is a veteran or otherwise. In Queensland there are many positive comments about the way in which patients were treated by health staff, but quite negative comments about wait times in emergency departments and wait times on elective surgery wait lists and outpatients wait lists. The hospital system here is overloaded, and has not grown to accommodate a growing population with complex health issues.

Nurses were very caring and considerate to my needs. This was in Sydney Australia so can’t say about overseas ones as never used

I told the nurse this and she said no, she had to run some tests. I waited about half an hour and they sent a volunteer. By now I'm not so cheery and just said I have to go to the bathroom. So they had me walk in my bare feet to the walk room and my foot stepped on some pretty sharp dirt. If I had spare clothes with me, I would have peed the bed I was so angry. There was only myself and one other patient on the unit.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I had two veteran friends who were treated less than they should have been. One came home from Iraq and Afghanistan homeless and with nothing left but PTSD and the inability to hold down a job. I finally told him to quit trying to work and admit he needed to apply for disability. That was what has saved him. My other friend was in the VA Hospital in DC, and I was shocked at what that old hospital was like. He was in the basement with no windows, and the old bricks on the walls looked like something from the 1930s! They did allow me to stay their overnight for free which was great, but sadly, he passed away from heart failure. I hadn't heard from him for a couple days so I finally called his mother, and she told me he had died! I was almost inconsolable, but his mother was comforting me! I never met her, but she was a very nice lady. It was so sad; he was only in his thirties!

Medicare is another part of our health system as many people are bulked billed for seeing a doctor or if you urgently need treatment in one of the many hospitals. I personally have spent a lot of time in hospitals, back in the 70s and 80s the food wasn't that flash but now the meals are so much better and its look appetising which makes you want to eat it. Dorothy O 122624 I am so pleased your friend had the best care and you felt the hospital was clean and had the right procedures in place.

Be aware that you may be in the hands of some very inhuman people.

Here in Australia we have a high rate of suicide amongst our returned veterans. They say they are not getting enough help for their mental wellness. I think medically though they are looked after quite well. My friend, is a war widow and she really gets looked after medically and any help around the home and has for many years. Wonderful service for her.

I have a few war widow friends actually all in their 80's and 90's. When I was younger I used to serve at the local RSL on Anzac Day amongst many others. Anzac Day was special and during my time as WW1 veterans were still with us. I had many great uncles and uncles plus cousins who have fought in many wars from the Boar War on. Sad to think governments have never learnt of the futility of it all. No one really wins. Congratulations and a Happy Birthday to your grandmother.
