Discussion of the Day
Are Food Manufacturers Slowly Poisoning Us?
Vicki S 48490430-Nov-21
The more I learn about additives to processed food, the more horrified I am. Do they really need to put trans fats and other cancer causing additives into our food? What is their purpose and why does our government allow it to happen?

  • large quantities of sugar are good as cheap fillers..and work as preservatives too...just needs enough large quantities of salt to balance things so it still tastes good....and salt preserves things too...wonderful...thank you Masterfoods....

    • Yes...don't eat processed foods..it is mostly dog food...but I wouldn't give it to my dog either...

      • I just want to know why they have to put all these weird things in our foods! Seems like we are all guinea pigs.

        • Another thing - there's no point worrying about minute chemicals or carcinogens (strictest quality control measures involved in food production) in food if you are doing the following: a) Drinking alcohol (alcohol is a class 1 carcinogen) b) Smoking anything (burned aerosols particularly bad) c) Wearing makeup - a whole host of nasties including micro plastics and known endocrine disruptors to name a few d) Taking powerful meds (some ingredients can be harmful) e) Using over the counter beauty products (less strict quality control methods compared to food). Food nasties are often essential to protect food from spoiling: mould can be far more toxic than any of the food chemicals used and then there's also parasites, bacteria and viruses. Anyways... Smoking will kill you... Bacon will kill you... But, smoking bacon will cure it! Enjoy life, try not to fret the small stuff and have things in moderation and you should be sweet :)

          • Yes can be that way. Cancer is basically the body not managing cells properly so anything can tip it off, particularly known carcinogens. It's all to do with our immune system which is our cellular management system. It controls apoptosis and cell proliferation - key areas for managing cancer.

          • I'm not a lover of too much processed foods. Why is it that so many recipes for people with Coelic Disease have so much salt in them? Probably in an attempt to add flavour as some foods do taste rather bland. It is shocking how many bought salad dressings and and sauces have gluten (wheat or barley in them), even most chocolates and lollies do too (they are a very occasional special event treat)
            ·
            • I try to grow or purchase from a farmers market fresh foods.

                • Its not hard to read research papers put out by universities that have been given government grants to investigate the topic. if you are interested, try reading Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT), an internationally renowned journal, that publishes original research articles and reviews on toxic effects, in animals and humans, of natural or synthetic chemicals occurring in the human environment with particular emphasis on food, drugs, and chemicals

                  • If you not happy don't buy its. If you don't want eat the things. Read the labels before buying its. Like today i needed a vegan foods for fasting for Christmas and i read the ingredients and read what inside i vold the stuffs i can't eat or didn't want its. Its up to the person end of the day
                    ·
                    • At the end of the day, the person who wants a healthy product will pay through the nose for it while the uninformed/apathetic will grab the toxic cheaper products and go through life till arthritis, diabetes, cancer, heart, liver or kidney disease takes hold, then they'll whine about the food manufacturers, just like they did about tobacco companies and use up valuable medical services. Things won't change until enough people refuse to buy these products. I'd be careful with vegan processed foods, often many plant-based snacks and meals are actually highly processed, calorie-laden, or secretly harboring vast quantities of sugar and sodium.

                  • Trans fats are a big deal but no-one seems to care. The only time you see them mentioned is when they aren't in the food. They are banned in some European country's, but not here. If the cake etc. will keep for more than a few days it has Trans Fats in it otherwise it would go stale. Then there is corn syrup which can't be processed by the liver. You should only use cold pressed virgin olive oil otherwise it becomes carcinogenic, but you won't read that anywhere. Is it any wonder we are all slowly getting fatter regardless of what we eat or don't eat. Even our fresh food isn't fresh. It has been picked before it's ripe then frozen or gassed to make it keep for longer. Yes, much of the food we eat is possibly killing us.
                    ·
                    • Probably. But it is up to us what we put in our bodies.

They gave up a few pleasures like smoking and store bought lattes because they realised their health was more important. Believe me, Just like brushing only the teeth you want to keep, you won't miss your health till you lose it

                                    • Some additives in foods are necessary to reduce spoiling (pathogens or degradation) for example, some are for food appearance such as food colouring or texture, others are for flavours. They're all there for a purpose and that purpose is to increase sales and reduce cost of wastage. Those trans fats, sugar and salt make food much more tastier in a less costly way and all of these can also be used as preservatives as well. Convenience and that level of deliciousness has a cost! If all you eat is processed foods then your bound to run into problems but... If a large portion of your diet is healthy then it's not gonna harm ya. You can still enjoy and love food and be healthy if you do it right.

As well as that other things can get into ingredients through the environment, In NZ there even is an allowable amount of 1080 Sodium monfloroacetate an universal toxin with no antidote. Allowable amount wont kill you at least not straightaway but it does damage organs little bit by little bit especially heart and others that have high use of oxygen. It is a endocrine/hormone disrupter

We rely to much on snacks and fast food today because we are time poor. We have to start cooking at home more and not rely on processed foods.

Bake from scratch. let's get back to un-processed, sugary nasty shit. Buy local, buy fresh, buy with pride and feel satisfaction. It's sad when you see sugary drinks on sale at 99c when milk prices are through the roof. This is also the reason we now have gluten intolerant, lactose, etc. by what the manufacturers have been putting in food all these years. I don't buy into it and will stay traditional in my cooking and baking from scratch.

I don't buy many processed foods and cook a lot at home. I love that people here make a lot of their own from scratch, I need to learn how to make things from scratch too so I can stop buying it. And it's such a tough situation. These companies only care about the $ and not interested in public health. People need to stop buying processed foods but it's tough due to convenience and the prices. If we all stopped buying they would be out of business but it just isn't going to happen. We all need to be responsible for our own health because the government isn't going to do it for us.

I will have to say it take a lot of my time and work but the reward after wards is well worth it. I make everything I eat from scratch except for bread which I want to try baking again but unfortunately the last 2 times I used bread machines they knocked the circuit breaker and I haven't been game to try again. I think next time I'll have to knead by hand and bake in my oven. I never eat fast food and I rarely purchase any preready frozen items either. I think this is the way to go. I'm about to dry over a kilo of shallots I picked from the community garden and 1/2 a kilo of parsley, yes that's a lot but it was going to seed, and I hate the waste. Take care now.

Some years ago a company released one of the most addictive Breath Freshener Lollies/lozenges, they flavour was extraordinary and they proudly advertised and stated in large print on the packet: Contains "Copper Chlorophyll". We sold them in our shop. people did not simply buy one packet they bought multiples and would consume a pack or two every day. We wanted to know what this Copper Chlorophyll was - Chlorophyll sounds nice and healthy as plants use and make it. Surprise! Surprise! Copper Chlorophyll is what is known as a Heavy Metal and is very highly Carcinogenic. When we approached the manufacturers their response was that the amount contained in these lozenges was so small as to be negligible. We then pointed out to them that the body is incapable of eliminating Copper Chlorophyll and that, over time, it accumulates in the body and as a known Carcinogenic it eventually causes that disease. We also wrote to the Federal Health Department. The product was removed from the market. We still wonder how many of our customers, some of whom were consuming a packet or more every day, ended up with cancer. The amount of chemicals with names only scientists can pronounce and listed as part of the ingredients in so many products is horrifying. A totally unnecessary additive to food, including Butter Substitute spreads, is the by-product of petroleum called Trans Fats - an artificial fat which makes things smoother - just like the oil you put in your care makes the parts operate smoothly! This should be banned as it contributes nothing towards Good Health.

That's why I prefer to make almost everything for our family. Too many additives. I make almost everything from scratch. So much cheaper and you know what is in it. What is wrong with good old fashioned healthy food. Watching some USA cooking shows turns me right off when you see what they eat.

Make my own sauces, some cheeses, bread, yoghurts. At least I know exactly what's in them. Do buy good cheese but grate myself becauser they now add something to stop the cheese sticking together. The list of additives in things amaze me.

TOBACCO LOCKED WINDOWS, NO FRESH AIR. AIRCONDITIONERS, STAYING SHUT UP INSIDE WITH UNNATURAL LIGHTING, THE LIST ROLLS ON AND I DONT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO LIST ECERYTHING. SO I GUESS THE AMOUNT OF ADDITIVES IN FOOD. THE WAY FOOD IN FACT IS COOKED OR NOT. THE PRESERVATIVES THAT GOING RAISING, KILLING, COOKING AND EVEN STORING CAN ALL ADD TO JUST WHAT HAPPENED TO FRESH FB. I THINK I JUST AS GUILTY OF COOKING FOODS ????????????????????as the next all the additives we use you can probably see I grew up with a very dull plain foods but I do think , we need to look at the preservatives in foods. Where and in w hat do we use for booking where our food comes from . Gosh it’s hard living when we are all inadvertently poising ourselves with the food we tend to eat.
