A Piece of Our Heritage
07-Feb-21
One of life s many wonders, for me, is heritage and cultures. Many are steeped with the knowledge of it and others not so much. I am a blend. I am Tsalagi (Cherokee - American Indian), African-American, and Irish.
I know enough about they all, but never all. How do you feel about your heritage and it s culture? Or, is there anything you are willing to share about your heritage to enlighten some of us with an additional awe?

  • Yes, there were internment camps all over Australia. I remember my father telling me about Violet Town in Victoria, but there were camps in every state.

          • I have always been proud of my German heritage. It’s interesting finding out, though, just how badly the Germans were treated in Australia during WW 1 and 2, due to the high level of suspicion with which they were regarded, and how innocent people, including Lutheran pastors, were sent to internment camps, just for being German.

                  • that's easy what you want to know about your heritage, is all there, on Find MY Family, its easy, fun and fulfilling. In as much as I knew most of my family tree, since I was young, because my grandmother was always on our back to learn, there has always been times when I wanted to find bits for myself, Thanks to Ancestry .com I have finally found more on the Irish side on Dad's (RIP), still not complete but I know enough now

                      • These days most people are likely to be a blend of something or other. Genetics has also shown quite a mixture for many people. I know that I have a lot of Viking background from both sides of my father's parents with a whole lot of other European background that I have yet to trace. It is interesting but our culture is really what we are today - of course this is influenced by the families we grew up in but also by the world as it is now. We can all be enriched if we learn something of how other people see the world so that we can live together amicably.

God must have been looking into a very cracked mirror when he created us. Of course there were nor mirrors yet at that stage of History so the only explanation I can concoct is that a bird flew over the river of reflection and dropped a twig and made it ripple causing us all to be different shapes, colours and sizes! Something has just dawned on me! Two words HIStory and HERitage could this be the beginning of the Adam and Eve historical heritage in the Garden of Eden? Sure would make for a very short in solving our "A Piece of Our Heritage".

The Americans seem to love the joint titles. After 5 generations of people living in this country I just consider myself of this nation. My ancestry is another thing. I do have different cultures etc. mainly Irish and Danish with a few others thrown in for good measure but I do not look at these as my culture. I have grown up in this country with the traditions etc. which are relevant here. I am not living my ancestors lives good or bad. It is nice to know where one came from but always remember where one is now. I have researched my family tree going back to the 1400's on both sides. Interesting to know how and where they lived, died, fought, married etc. but it is just that, interesting but not defining to me.
