Discussion of the Day
Retirement Age
202511-May-22
It's been suggested by both major parties in Australia to increase the retirement age.
(The age of 70 has been mentioned.)
I have a relative who retired about two years ago due to hip problems. He was a former truck driver.
Lucky for him...he has enough money in superannuation to rely on.
(Do you think that it should be raised?)
Not everyone has got enough of the super...and if their health isn't what it used to be...it might be a struggle for some.
Some might find it more difficult, esp if they have laborious jobs.

  • Yeah right, and then they will raise it to 75, then 90 and then what the f*** is retirement, work till you drop you bastards, while we snort up all the extra money that we didn't have to pay you poor decrepit losers... But what about all the old decrepit losers getting sick from having to work their guts out.. The health cost will be massive... And it will fall to the public health system to pay it... Have you ever experienced a smart honest politician...??

    • I Think 70 is far too old.Let people enjoy their retirement while they are still reasonably fit and healthy
      ·
      • I think it should be kept the same but also have an age range of about 10 years in case the person becomes physically disabled or incapacitated in another sense. So have a set age but not a penalty if someone needs to stop working early for valid reasons.

        • I am 74 this year and still working - 4 days a week (28 hours). Mine is not a manual/physical job and I am happy doing so with money coming in each week - I think I will finally retire maybe at the end of the year, and working from home over the last 2 years has made it easy. I am healthy enough so 3 days off 4 on is ideal for me.

            • Retirement age should depend on if you are still able to work. Why the governments trying to raise the age limit is because the pension is a liability to them. They consider pensioners as a dead weight. I know five people who have never worked a day in their life. Should they get a pension when they retire? No!

              • Several haert attacks, heart disease and severe vision impairment ensured early 'retirement' in early 1998. What shocked me was the horrendous taxation when I tried to get some part time paid work within my capabilities, apart from 'normal' taxation I was penalised by having my disability pension reduced by 50 cents for every dollar that I earned over $128 per fortnight Perhaps some tax considerations for retirees might help.

                • If they need people to work over the age of 65...perhaps it should be part time and only as mentors to younger workers...I'd be happy to work another 5 or even 10 years part time if I can just teach younger people all the things they need to know to do a better job....otherwise no

                  • I am in two minds about the subject, so many businesses are closing down because they can't get staff, so if you are still able to work go for it,, but on the other hand there are so many lazy able bodies that all they want to do is clame funds from center link, I wish I was still able to go to work,, I have worked in plumbing factory, clerical work in Building Companies, Ran a courier company, ran a Post Office, level 7 in age care, but evertime I tried to volunteer for anything I was told that I'll be taking the position from a younger person, go back several months and they still have no one, Forced Retirement at a young age nearly sent my Husband and I to our Grave, Its up to the indevigual person if they want to retire or not.But Get the Lazy Buggers of their proverbials Mr Primeminister who ever you are going to be, some time this month, and leave the oldies that can't last to the age they have to be alone, they paid their taxes so let them enjoy the last years of their lives

                    • People are living longer so the retirement age should be raised accordingly, but if people don't have enough super, why? My husband and I realized long before we retired that we didn't want to live on a pension, so once our 17% mortgage was paid off we saw a financial advisor. We weren't earning lots of money, possibly not even average, but saving isn't easy at any time and you have to sacrifice. We are now both fully retired and the Government gives us nothing, nor do we expect anything. However, none of our children has any intention of saving or paying more into super telling us they would rather enjoy life now and not worry about tomorrow like we did. It's funny because both my husband and I saw our parents living on the pension and decided we didn't want that for ourselves. Who knows whether our children will be happier than us and choose when to retire.

                        • the retirement age should not be raised. most people have had enough of work by the time they get to 65 especially if they have worked hard all their lives in a heavy or very stressful job.

                          • we are already retired, but because of the 2008 financial crisis, lost 95% of our super. I feel for those who are near to retirement age, but because of lack of financial freedoms are forced to work on. What Australia needs is more apprenticeships to train up the next generation,to supply the work force with a steady supply of qualified workers. You cant live on a pension, its hard to make ends meet.
                            ·
                            • That has been the intention in Australia for a long time and they have been gradually doing it. I definitely don't agree with it Maybe they should bring back the Bonus thing they had once. Perhaps if you keep working after 68 (not sure what current retirement age is now) you get a certain percentage of your Tax refunded each year or some other type of incentive. .

                                • The retirement age should be raised but gradually thus allowing people to put more money into superannuation to ensure adequate income in retiremant

                                    • Retirement ages should be scaled like the current French policy. Truckers retire at about 60, Ballerinas at age 45 etc. It's all very well for non manual workers to continue to 70 but the more demanding labouring jobs should have an appropriately lower retiring age.

I had received Section 8 housing, and now live on my $628 a month Social Security, my EBT card for food (in WA state), $30 a month help with the Internet, and my electric is covered by grants from the Opportunity Council. I've never felt more secure, or been more happy in my life! There is help out there if anyone honestly needs it to live. I'm 74 now. ;-D

This is our government never paying us back for the taxes we have paid over the 50-60 years we have worked. My husband gets a pension and we struggle a little on living on one but he is punished for being with a younger woman as I am not of pension age yet. There is no work out here for me to do, my back, knees and hips won't allow me to pick fruit or veggies. That could cripple me so no Thanks. We live a very simple life and we do what we can to save money where ever we can. We grow a few veggies, herbs and would like some fruit trees not there yet soon we hope and some chickens too one day. The government taxes the super and have changed the rules on it so many times it is not funny. If you do not pay into super it will be eaten away by the fees the company charges. What a rip off, it is your money and they are robbing it off you. Hence I have no time for super and what about all the house wives out here living on farms do they get super? Do they get paid for their domestic services? Just another scam and there is no recourse if a company looses all your money and they go bankrupt. Met quite a few people on the road travelling around with all they had with them as they had lost every thing, their homes, retirement plans had very little left. Quite sad to say the least. I get that the pension will disappear one day but there will always be people whom will never have enough and will need assistance.
                                                                      ·
                                                                      • Perhaps it should be increased as far as getting a full pension is concerned, but sickness and being infirm should also be taken into the equation. Those who can and want to keep being employed should also be accommodated with either no loss of pension but pay taxes on employment earnings. This might help the unemployment problem as the older populace don't know how to not work, it's not an ethic of theirs. All up the whole system should be overhauled to make it fairer for all.
                                                                        ·

So you should be able to access some of your super and get your seniors card and work part time and still live. This way you will have more time for hobbies and have less stress. Another thought is that there should be a health program to keep them fit and active physically and mentally. Seniors card should be offering more like free classes for say yoga, pilates etc. I know the money would have to come from somewhere but surely some people/facilities can offer 1 free class a week. To be honest I don't know what seniors card offers besides some small discounts for meds and some restaurants etc.

From 50 you tend to get looked at differently, if looking for a new job. Might be fine if the person is in a non manual role that they are already in, but it is very difficult for many people to gain new employment after 55 let alone older. People that are well connected might be fine, but the reality is a lot of recruitment people are in their 20's and 30's and it shows. Whilst I understand why they have done it as the population is continuing to be an aging one and there will not be the working age population to support aged pensions etc. I believe there has to be more support for mature aged workers to gain employment and suitable training/ retraining if needed.

I have a mate in the Supreme Court and he works about 18 hours a day to get what he needs done and he's not even one of the senior ones. They have lot to do and sitting in a court running a trial is just a small part of it.

The one single thing that can not happen in a open court is a Criminal Offense occur if it does it is the Judges Fault and it is the Judge who gets charged with the offence not the perpetrators. unless the judge jumps on it straight away and gets the clerk of the court to do something about it. Most people warn me off about this Dangerous Guy who I have now known for 50 years at least and like all members of the bar if they see something illegal happening in front of them that have to report it doesn't matter who they are be it the most junior Paralegal or the Highest Judge. So many people think they have a right to tell these people what they have done wrong and get away with it. It's like a guy I know who was selling a car so he took off the number plates and hooned around the streets and then wondered why he was caught. The For Sale Sign on the car with his home and mobile phone numbers may have been a bit of a give away but the Video Recording he posted on Facebook to show off was the killer. Most people have the brains of an ameba and get exactly what they deserve.

If you want to look for backhanders try the DPP Department of Public Prosecutions and look at the charges they bring against companies when they screw up saving their bottom line. I've yet to see any company charged with Manslaughter when it should actually be Murder and even in the most extreme cases the charges are a joke. Look at all those people from the banks that where shown up as Outright Criminals at the Royal Commission and see what charges where not pressed against them. The Judges only hear cases when people have been charged they CAN NOT instigate their own charges or convict people of things they are not charged with. Even the Bottom of the Harbor Tax Schemes look at who got convicted and how long the sentence recommended by the DPP was. The only one I can think of was the guy who took off to Europe that ran Minerax or something similar and he was only really charged with Contempt of Court for not appearing. The guy from Qld Nicole who is Palmers nephew is another one who flew the coup and has a Contempt of Court Arrest Warrant can't think of any more but to make matters worse in the very unlikely event some business person gets charged with something take a look at the Maximum Sentence that can be imposed by the Get Tough On Crime State Governments and then look at the mandatory Sentences that must be imposed if you are somewhere near something bad that happens by someone you are unformat enough to know. I remember a Police Setup where they supplied the ingredients bought the products and then attempted to impound the land that the drugs they wanted and made where cooked upon. The entire case hindged around a guy who know the cook from High School and allowed him to live in a shed on his farm till he recovered from Bankruptcy. When the Police raided the farm they found no utensils, no ingredients, no drugs but they had hundreds of photos of the guy in question being handed the stuff and handing back the cooked drugs. They could not prove he even cooked the Ice on the property but guess who's property was sized under the Proceeds of Crime Act when the only thing that they could find wrong with the guy who owned the farm was he was storing too much fuel which he claimed was needed for harvesting the crop that was starting the next week. Under those circumstances there is a Mandatory Law of that the Judge has to do if the police claim the drugs where made there with no supporting proof there is only one possible sentence that can be handed down. In that case I would be looking very hard at the Pollies who made that law and see what they benefited out of it.

You work hard all your life, invest in super if one can then you retire have the money and the next thing you know is you cannot enjoy the years left because you become ill, can't travel or someone dies, there are many scenarios which we can be unprepared for. There are a lot of people out there who have been made redundant or who are medically unfit to work and could have gone on the pension earlier if the government hadn't put the age up. Those in government don't have to rely on Centrelink for their pension they get paid loads which they don't deserve plus bonuses and everything else. In my opinion when they retire they should have to live off the state pension like everyone else and if they aren't old enough for the state pension then maybe they will discover what it's like using up their super to survive and see how they like it.

They only have to be in Parliament for 2 years and they get the pension regardless of age. Once they get the pension it doesn't matter how much they earn it never affects their pension. I know this because I was friends with someone who did this and he still gets the pension, owns property and has no problems accessing his super. I had to stop work 4 1/2 years ago due to medical conditions and chronic pain. I can't get a disability pension or Centrelink payments because specialist thinks it may get better but my doctor can't see how when I also have debilitating arthritis of the spine, I'm only going to get worse so I've had to use my super. My medication alone costs me over $200 month because I also can't get that cheaper. By the time I reach retirement age I won't have any super left. If I was an immigrant (legal or illegal) I wouldn't have to worry about money or keeping a roof over my head. The saying "Australia is a lucky country" but it should also say "especially if you're an immigrant".

On 1 July 2021, Age Pension age increased to 66 years and 6 months for people born from 1 July 1955 to 31 December 1956, inclusive. If your birthdate is on or after 1 January 1957, you'll have to wait until you turn 67. This will be the Age Pension age from 1 July 2023. I do think the age should have been left at 65, because some people work in jobs that they would not be capable of doing after that age.

The population was nowhere as large as it is now and people did not live as long as they do now. The mistake that governments made was not to up the age every 20 years or so that we understood that retirement age would increase albeit slowly. We are not putting enough money into the pot to cover the 65 year old's retiring if we don't do something there will be no pension for anybody. I worked till I was 72 even though I could have retired at 60. It depends on many things health, sort of work being done and state of mind. We should also train for people to leave jobs like building or truck driving (bodies can only take so much) and go into lighter jobs. If you have put extra into your super and can afford to live on the income from that you should be able to retire at your preserved age.

Most people have paid their share in taxes over the years why should they continue to work until that age. As it is most employers don't want you at that age, the company I last worked for would not hire anybody over 45yrs old, not that they are going to tell you that, but in the position I held I knew about it. Perhaps if these Politicians had the same income as most of us instead of there lucrative salary they give themselves they may think differently. Apart from that we need to make room in the workforce for the younger generation.

Most of us start having health issues in our 60's. They should get those who are not working or have no intentions of working, to work for a change. Give others a break.

ALSO we still have in Australia the Aged Pension, Disability etc which we paid for out of our taxes as we worked, It should be marked on payslip, 7% for retirment and 2.5% for Medicare. If you are ill you dont have to keep working. BUT THIS WILL ALL BE TAKEN AWAY unless more people wake up and take an interest what these globalists have been putting into place. Makes 1984 look like a picnic. I am 74 and have been retired for decades due to work related injury. But am till able to work casually. And what is sad to see is how many people do not take an interest in politics, when politics is what makes and changes the rules and guidelines on how we will live..... SAD when the idiotbox is more important that the globalists that are changing laws the affect our daily life.

It is all distraction, distraction, distraction and fear, fear, fear! Our MSM and government, colluding together, have created such a horrendous situation that will have us in both physical and psychological chains for generations. I am 57, had to retire from a much loved job as an RN right at the point where my earnings would have shot up due to superiority and my kids no longer required 10's of 1000's of dollars to be spent on private schools etc. BAD decision just one of many but I am now in a situation which 20 years ago was impossible to imagine. Then we had March 2020 come along and the whole entire world was taken in by mass formation psychosis and an unlimited budget for propaganda became avaiable so that the peoples of planet earth complied with orders that made no sense then and make ABSOLUTELY no sense now! It doesn't matter that our own Australian government had documents from October 2019 stating just how many millions of PCR kits for a "pandemic" which wouldn't arrive for several months had been ordered and even earlier documents showing the involvement of our DOD with the US Military and CIA to create a "vaccine" that was NEVER a vaccine so they just changed the definition of a vaccine so they could convince nearly 8 billion people to engage in a mass experiment of a gene based therapy with no therapeutic advantages at ALL and that NO VIRUS was EVER isolated and the only "evidence " of what the alleged C19 looked like was created on a computer as was the insilico model of the now "identified" genome sequence thanks to the Chinese scientists working with other scientists funded by the NIH and NIAD at a University lab in Chapel Hill, NC among other sites . The entire world was played by the WHO, Gates and the WEF all for their "Great Reset" and so the catchphrase "Build Back Better" became the slogan on the mouth of every single puppet who had been SELECTED not ELECTED to the heads of supposedly independent nation states, but nothing could be further from the truth. We are in a pit lined with quicksand and I'm not expecting a lifeline from any other nation and so the Communist States of Australia, part of the NWO was born. We have more babies dying in the womb than EVER before, more pregnancies ending as the baby has died due to lack of oxygen and nutrition from the placenta, an issue never at rates similar to today prior to 2021. More couples seeking IVF because they can't fall pregnant naturally and very few will leave with a live baby. We have kids between 5 and 10 years who are developing atypical hepatitis and are either dying or requiring an urgent liver transplant to survive. We have more sports people than EVER dying on the field or collapsing dead somewhere due to a massive heart attack and hospital wards full of young patients who are in with cardiac problems and the only thing that is common to all of them are they've been jabbed sometimes repeatedly. We have a Sigma 5 event in the US which means that a situation with "all cause mortality" in people of work age, which they took up to 60 years, is expected to be seen in the US in 500 years. A 1 in 500 year event and in 2021 the US lost as many people in that age group as died in the entire Vietnam war! Over 15K and after saying that the insurance actuary was HEAVILY censored and prevented from conducting any more interviews. The censorship is nothing less than Orwellian! In Australia there have been no birth updates, which used to provided 6 weeks later, since February 2020 but we KNOW that NICU's are full of sick, preterm and small for dates babies and those are the ones not stillborn and when Funeral Directors speak out they are silenced but THEY see the death daily. We are all supposed to line up regularly for a shot, of which our government purchased 14 for each and every Australian back at the beginning of this plandemic! But we are estimated to lose 4 million to death by 2025. Many of us will simply starve before then anyway. Take care now Jania as I've said enough for 1 comment.

Age retirement should start at 60. How are jobs for the next generation going to open up if people who would like to be retired but cannot be due to the law or finanacial reasons, stay in the workforce? We all want to live a long, healthy and pain free life but the older you get...the more pain is around the corner. You should be able to retire young enough to enjoy it before you can't move a muscle or speak.

It might depend on your job as yes you can work in an office for a while longer but what about those who have physically demanding jobs. They work in them their whole life, the retirement age keeps moving further from them and their body slows down... but what and how do yourl retrain at 50 or even 60years old. It's hard enough for women to go back to work after a period of time from having children, let alone retraining to a completely different job. What companies are going to put money training people who are already showing signs of age. The superannuation system is not all it should be, companies get away with paying fixed amounts or not at all then people are already disadvantaged. These days with cost of living going up it's also hard to buy that first home let alone second or third or have money to invest elsewhere. I don't know what that answer is but there needs to be something and pushing i5 further and further out for people already in the working system just doesn't work. Unless you are the top 1% or have govt pensions (ie politicians) for life

NO. I could do a few days a week but that's all so I retired and use the energy to do other things. But then that's me - others may not be able to work in this frenzied age and should be able to retire earlier. Health - both physical and mental - makes the decision.

That was proportional to life expectancy of 65. Nowadays the equivalent retirement age is 67 and life expectancy 83.

One, health issues will pop up and affect your job performance. Two, the states (USA) with the lowest minimum wage law have the lowest life expectancy - without pushing up the age you can retired!

Of course the powers that be who increase the age will get high wages and super from the labors of these workers. Physical work means the body wears out sooner. Mine did at 60. I have no super as I was divorced and did not receive a penny from my ex's although we had been married for a very long time and had 3 children. I know people (women) who are working and are 78 and around that age. My sister worked till she was 72 and then diagnosed with cancer and passed away. When I was younger I know my mothers retirement age was 55 and I think my fathers was 60 but I am not totally sure of that. I know the goal posts have been getting moved every few years and now many have to reach 67 plus before they retire. Seems like they want the baby boomers to keep working. I wonder how that will sit with the millenials who already think we should move out of our homes for them.

Only those who don't work will be short for retirement and rely on public funding. So there is no need to raise the retirement age. One thing that could be done is allow someone on age pension to earn more than they can now and relax tax laws for pensioners who work.

Their health and mobility could both be bad. Regardless, everyone should be saving for retirement.
