Discussion of the Day
Should any books be banned?
Richard 148042724-Aug-24
While growing up during the Cold War, I was repeatedly taught that a big difference between us and the USSR was that the USSR banned books while we, in the free world, wouldn't do such a thing. Today, we are seeing many books banned in parts of America. Personally, I never thought that I'd see the day when books would be banned in America!

  • No. But that's the way it is.

    • It's no different to banning films. There had been some films banned over the decades.

      • No. Books have changed throughout history according to the times. Words that are now offensive to us were normal once and that is reflected in literature. Should we not read "Gone With the Wind"? because it was made during slave times? Should we not enjoy "To Kill a Mockingbird" because we may not agree with the language. When you start cutting yourself off or boxing yourself in, you lose perspective. Stories should be enjoyed. All stories.

        • Banning books makes people want to read them.

          • The Bible. Read the book of deuteronomy for starters. It is all full of lies. Wars are all started over the belief in the lies of the bible. Women are treated like crap

            • You can't prove its all lies or misinformation. It's like saying that Jesus wasn't real. But most people believe he was. So, why would a biblical set of books not exist too?

          • Gender theory makes no perfect sense. Why would you allow such BS? It's being PC or woke.

            • USSR suppressed writing against the state and these books were circulated in what was called "samizdat"- self publishing, typing them on typewriter and distributing among people you knew. So ban was not as effective as Soviet government wanted it to be. Yes, people went to jail and Gulag for that. In US, however, I see a certain level of ridiculous banning of the books that doesn't make sense- as in disagreeing with certain theories and then banning books on them. I would understand racist literature being banned, but things like gender theory and history? No, does not make sense.

              • When I was young and lived along the Mason Dixon Line, libraries did not ban books, but actually had rooms separated by age-appropriate literature. Parental permission could be given for a young person to advance to an older age group, or a school could give permission for researching a topic. I thought it was ridiculous, but not so much these days & I agree with Peter C, ratings may be a good answer.

                  • This has been a conundrum since books began being produced. I struggle to accept that banning books is consistent with our liberal democratic values. But there should be some protection for immature minds from graphic or misleading content. So, as we put ratings on TV shows and movies, I think there should be something similar for books.

                    • Yes any book that a s9 called author calls her memoirs should have to have a 3rdparty independent person scrutinise it first so the author doesnt demoralise innocent people in the pursuit of making money .

                          • Keeping books with inappropriate content out of libraries protects kids, but doesn't stop people from reading those books or prevent authors from writing them.

                              • We have allowed some people with very loud voices decide for us what we can and can't read, watch, believe or say. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? No-one gets disciplined, no-one gets punished and no-one fails today. An Australian court has even ruled that being a woman is not about your sex, it's more about how you feel. No book should be banned, if you commit a crime you should be punished, if you can't cut it with your peers you fail. We should be entitled to think what we think and believe what we believe and no law should prevent us from saying how we feel unless it really is hate speech and not the dribble that is claimed as hate speech today. The Australian Government is trying to pass a law where it decides what is and isn't hate speech, and yet people can stand in the streets burning flags and screaming abuse at others and that isn't hateful. The Nazi's burnt books but strangely the people calling most of us Nazi's because we don't agree with them on climate change and other minor issues are the ones burning and banning books. Back in the 1970's there was a very famous book that was made into a film which was also banned in Australia. Someone got hold of a copy of the book which I read and found it to be the biggest load of rubbish and a complete waste of my time. I don't know what reading it was supposed to do to me, I don't think I changed and it didn't change the way I felt about anything and if there hadn't been such a song and dance about it people like me wouldn't have wondered what was so insidious about it. Placing restrictions on some books yes but not banning them.

                                    • Ni books should nit be banned ever. Yes there are books I choose not to read, and believe some should never have been published. But that is my opinion. Many authors at the time of print wrote things that for the time were considered unworthy, insane or otherwise. And now considered great works ie Nostadamis( probably spelt wrong). I love my books, can't imagine life without.

Communists and people like Hitler ban books and now democratic countries are doing it. Absolutely shameful that our so called democracies are turning into dictators.

You could read them yourself to see what I mean or there are plenty of comparisons done online, which show the similarities in both books, some passages/events are very similar. Interestingly, when they compare the violence it’s found to be more common in the Bible AND more severe. But all these writings are subject to the individuals interpretation of course. Some Christians in America used passages in the bible to justify the attacks/attempted genocide of native Americans, and some Muslims have used passages in the Quran in a similar way. I really don’t think we should be exposing young minds to either of these books. The idea that you can wipe out an entire group of people including infants and nursing babies (Samuel 1,15) on your god’s justification is not something you should be brainwashing young minds with.

However our people who could remember things as had been recounted to them started rewriting and also wrote away to people who had fled and may still have some books if they could be archived and reproduced so people can read for themselves. The most disturbing one is that a convicted felon who is waiting sentencing can run for president while anyone else cannot even join the armed forces with a felon! How can he be commander in chief of the military? Aren't we wasting time when he could be receiving a prison sentence before the election? The other shocking thing is how he has so many supporters! If he's elected, we will lose all of our rights. He cares for no one except himself and people, which he can use to accomplish his goal of becoming a world leader!

Restricted yes as some books are very suggestive and are not to be read by the younger people although come on they more about sex that what I did back when I was a kid. It's called the internet and from even as young as the age of 7 they know what sex is and what it is all about sadly. Their childhoods is certainly different to mine. Banning books no I wouldn't thought that was a thing these days.

This way, parents could restrict their own child's reading content while still respecting the rights of other parents to choose what their own children can read. Imo, nobody has the right to tell other people's children what they can't read. Whatever happened to reasonable compromise?

The problem is that it is those in power who are banning books usually do it to either prevent criticism of their ideology, silence whistleblowers and to impose their religious or social structure beliefs onto others by stifling ideas that contradict it. I do think there are some exceptions as in white supremicist nazi type propaganda, as this shit genuinely hurts a lot of people who have done nothing but simply exist. However I am not convinced banning even in these cases is an effective way to manage them. It drives this crap underground and feeds their grandious victim mentality and conspiracy theories. Maybe shining a light on these ideas and showing how abhorent they are might be better than pushing them underground and have them thriving on the notoriety of being "forbidden".

I was only about 17 at the time. I thought I was being very brave. It is almost laughable now, the very adult was on about one page only. So no do not ban books we do not want a repeat of what happened during the war in Germany.

Why try to control the way a person thinks or believes by controlling what they read? Instead allow them to grow and flourish with knowledge.

Archeologists have uncovered proof of things written in the Bible. Also scientists have proven what is already written in the Bible. Prophesies have mostly been fulfilled. There are only a few more left! When you see NATO turn against false religion, and hear of "peace and security", then you will see that what God has promised will come to be! ;-D

It's not about what happened years ago. They have a right to decide what's appropriate for their kids. So really depends on what they are banning.

I think LGBTQI books should not be available to kids and smutty books that make a bad impression on kids. If it's history books, as long as they are factual then I don't think they should be banned. Kids do need protection from bad books, like bad internet sites.
