Riches to rags
Maree B 8530813-Mar-21
Why do people pay good money to buy ripped and torn Jeans that make them look like they can't afford new clothes, because I don't care how broke I am , I refuse to leave the house wearing rags.

      • I have never kept up with 'so called fashion' and I also refuse to leave the house wearing torn clothes...I am still wearing clothes that I have bought many years ago...I try and stick to the basics which do not date...

        • I can not understand why kids go for this kind of stupid fashions, my grand daughter wanted to buy a pair, but she soon realised how much money she saved when I took her to the Op shop bought a pair then took her home and showed her how to make them look the same she wanted to pay big money for and saved at least $80, could not tell the differance

            • I'm in my 20s and I don't understand it. It looks shaggy, messy and untidy, as if the wearer couldn't care less about their appearance. It does not look like fashion. Fashion is clean, elegant and neat, not rags. I was raised to be neat and tidy, not look like I'd been dragged through thorny bushes.

              • I hate the ‘pov’ look! It looks like they raided the rag bag. Those sort of clothes I wear on the garden so it doesn’t matter if they get stained. Bigger fool them for being conned out of their money by unscrupulous ‘designers’.

                      • I agree Maree - reminds me of being a child and needing to wear things until they did wear out from use! I would not have been allowed off the farm with any holes that were obvious.
                        ·
                        • I always want to offer to repair them....but most of them look totally beyond repair anyway.

                          • It is a fashion trend and they will be not wearing anything else

                                  • Like the fashion of the trousers half way down their bum, I understand that started in Prison to say they were available, wonder if they even know. We were brought up in poverty and our clothes were hand me down and we got teased and bullied. I prefer to look clean and tidy not like I have been living rough.

                                                  • I think it is a designer item and people that purchase these items of clothes feel comfortable wearing them. Some people feel that the design is an upmarket item and some just believe in wearing the old comfortable designs for this reason THEY ARE BROKEN IN AND COMFORTABLE.

                                                      • It is all about an absurd concept called "Fashion", and people, particularly women, fall for it hook, line and sinker!, "designer gear" at literally Hundreds of dollar per item! Stick someone's name on a label, show a few pics of them at some plastic fashion show and youv'e got a New World famous Fashion Designer - whether they actual;ly have any Talent or not is irrelelvant. The people who buy this scam don't seem to realise that most of the stuff they pay so much money for is made in countries like China, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India where wages are very low and, in the case of CHINA those clothes are made using FORCED LABOUR.

That's is not so, I said people, I meant any people regardless of age. And reading some of the comments here some older people think torn jean make them appear trendy or younger. They then got back on the bus after each and every one shot their jeans and went back to Cairns where the borded a plane and flew back to where they came from. Seems a very expensive pair of jeans to me particuarly when you consider they had to bring their own new jeans with them.

To see people spending a great deal of money to buy ripped jeans seems so wrong. We didn't know how trendy we were apparently!

Not my cup of tea by any means but it is up to the individual whether they wear them or not. Going back over the years there has been and will continue to be fashion that a lot of people would never wear. When I look back at some outfits I wore, thinking I looked pretty good, what a laugh! To each their own I say.

They are not hurting you, it's their own money. Leave them alone. If wearing torn clothes is all they get up to, then that's OK by me.There's far more other nasty habits they could take up.

There is a tv show here in Australia where the contestants are constantly in "ripped" jeans etc and they don't impress me at all. I don't know if it is their own clothes or not - I suspect it is the producers of the show that dress them that way. Same with the horrible unshaved look - it just looks so scruffy.

If people are so image conscious that they need to be seen being seen in the right clothes or hair, with the right people, in the right places - what they really need is a personality. If they're that concerned about what people think of them - what they need is a life. In the 80's my girlfriend at the time, wanted to be seen buying $140 designer label jeans, then wanted to be seen queueing up to pay $80 to get them fashionably slashed. That night she bragged about it to her friends. I was embarrassed by her superficiality & inability to be herself. 1 more thing - since 8 of the 9 I mentioned are women, maybe this says as much about plastic society as it does about plastic people and image - but that's just my opinion.

I was a teenager during the early seventies and while I did wear flares (that was about all that was available at one stage anyway) and followed a few of the trends I didn't get into wasting money on anything outrageous like your girlfriend. Even now I can't see myself spending over $100 on an item of clothing. I don't need to stand out in the crowd and never have.

I bought a pair of track pants last year to wear around home. A few months later in the same store I noticed the branding of them was actually for a men's brand they had there. I bought them from a section between men's and women's wear so had no idea they weren't for women. I felt silly that I'd made the mistake then had a laugh about it with my husband and even bought another pair because they were so comfortable for lounging around home in.

People crave beautifully designed clothing and are willing to pay a fortune for it. There is nothing appealing about this ragged Doll look. If you wear these items, you are saying to the world you do not care about how you look. You will follow any outlandish clothing fad or craze in vogue and are saying you are content to wear perfectly good clothing torn to shreds- It is a protest and an attention seeker mechanism only=you want to be the centre of attention and don't give a damn about the finer styles of dressing superbly and fashionably. This is an insult to our creative and innovative designers who have wonderful new and original designs to offer and we should be supporting them.

I have aways resist what is suppose to be convention (example: fashion trends)!! Convention (or if you prefer tradition) is used to suppress minorities!!!

It's the same as the messy hair look or beach hair look, people spend money on products to recreate a look they can achieve naturally because they want to appear effortless because it's seen as desirable, when actually they are the exact opposite. I guess I just don't care enough about fashion.
