Let's Do The Time Warp?
APB22-Nov-24
We mostly look back at the past as somewhere better ... "Ah if I could only go back and live in those times again"... but your mind plays tricks. When I was six, every day was warm and sunny, we had two days of snow a year, but it never rained at all....if you remember the 1970s...do you remember going into a pub or onto a bus and the cigarette smoke being so thick it stung your eyes...and you couldn't see much? I bet you don't....and we all change too...you would probably have difficulty understanding yourself sometimes too...we just chop all the bad bits out perhaps? What do you think?

      • I remember when the milk came in bottles and the milkman was up late Fresh bread delivered to the house ,soft drink in wooden crates .It all seemed so simple then and no plastic containers for foods consumed. Each piece of fruit would come wrapped in tissue paper no bruising or sweating lasting longer .Love to go back to these good food trends.20 cents worth mixed lollies lasted a week so many .

        • I remember a pint of beer being 72 cents earning $70 a week. Smoke was very heavy in the air until they started to ban smoking. But of all that a lot of commodities appear to have doubled in price over the last four years, but wages and earnings haven’t.

              • Ah the good ol days when a packet of winnie blues was 5 bucks you could get a jd and coke for 3 bucks where the only cars on the road were big and mostly Australian built. 3 on the tree 4 on the floor and auto a luxury. The world much simpler safer. Look at it now. Yu got a light?

                        • I remember the past quite well. Summers were much hotter and the Winters much colder. Our water pipes used to freeze and my father would have to go outside and light a fire underneath the water meter in order to get water. As I walked to school on frozen grass it would crunch underneath my feet. We had a wood burning fire but when we didn't use it for 2 years in a row my father disassembled it. The Summers were hot and dry and not at all humid like they are now. As for people smoking, I caught the train to high school for 3 years and not one single person ever smoked in all of those years, then I travelled to work by train into the city for 2 years and for the first year no-one smoked in either direction but for the second year 1 person smoked on the way home. After 2 years I worked closer to home and a few people smoked on the train, but not as many as smoked where I worked. The nineties seemed worse for smoking than the previous decades.

I used to run home from primary school to watch it. I got my grand nephew to download an episode on YouTube the other day. WHAT A PIECE OF UNBELIEVABLE CR*P!!!. l Should of left my pleasant memories alone/lol.

                              • Yes our memories can definitely play tricks on us. If we loved something when we were young, we're more likely to remember it in a better light than what is actually was. The same can go in reverse, if there was a time we struggled in our life, our memory can make it seem so much worse. The moral of the story, always try and make the most of you've got in the present day.

                                • Don't miss the fog of cigarette smoke everywhere I went. I do miss the rain. Am sick of living in drought conditions. Having ice cold winters where it was foggy in the morning and the grass was crunchy with frost seems like a distant memory. I still live in the same area I grew up in, so it's not area specific...climate change is real.

                                        • There's great doco series called ' Back in time for dinner ' lt shows families in Australia and Britain going back in time and living through a different decade each week . Dressing up for church ,eating tripe with brussel sprouts ..then discovering the joys of the microwave and deep fryer ! Their family units abide to the social norms of the day also. . They begin in the 1950s then throughout. Goes to show the fashion dinner options and lack of things to do at times were not always that fun! But rose coloured glasses are always a pleasure to wear on a dull and life weary day ,I will admit ;)

Then eat tripe ewww .. poor things. Then get trussed up to get to church and community duties .. And which jobs the father just never would do! We had to suffer dad's steak and kidney pie and mum's attempt to give us fried liver... the smell of kippers under the griller on a Sunday morning on a rare occasion too. Hideous!

                                        • its better on our mental health to focus on the good times then the bad things, most of us have had bad things happening to us, which needs to be forgotten. Think on the positives not the negatives😀

                                          • My first big surprise was when I visited London. We had got over the shock of no cigarette smoke in bars, theatres, etc etc - then I walked into a very attractive old pub only to find the whole place was almost a fog of cigarette smoke. The Brits didn't get around to stopping it for another six years after Australia. My memories go back further than most of you. My Dad and Grandfather built my first house when I was 11 and across the road was green fields where we used to chain our goat each day. That area now doesn't have any trees or green fields, just houses!

                                            • Blocking out the bad stuff is, I think, just natural. Think about the time you ere most hurt physically. How long was it until you couldn't describe the pain any more actually than "it was the worst" , whether it was or not. The big problem with forgetting yesterday are the really, really bad things (if you were a victim,I mean) is that they can live down deep in your brain until you get unwired. Remember, be careful what you wish for becuse you might just get it.

                                              • Somethings were good but other weren't, we think it was all good back in the 70's but people were different, times were hard for us too just like now, we remember what we think was good, but it wasn't any different to now just different values and prices have gone up sure but so have wages to compensate, so no better off. I used to smoke and think nothing of it, the cost, what harm it was doing to me or people around me so that's a good thing it's change for the better. There are probably a few things we would all do differently if we could go back in time, but would it be what was supposed to happen?

Could buy a baggie stuffed full, way over an ounce for $6-10! The early days of Humboldt County homegrown! An ounce of hashish for $50, and almost pure coke for $100. None of this Fentanyl or fake opium. Police were mostly cool back then. Ladies could walk into any bar without worrying about ruffles or date rape drugs, you could walk down almost any street without being accosted, robbed, or knifed! I gave up on all of those drugs and drinking, going to bars, it was a great time to have grown out of! You could go to San Francisco for a GREAT live show, Hendrix, Zep, Grateful Dead, Doors, Who, most fir under $10-15.

Kids played in the street. We played Tag, Hide-and Seek, Kickball, Jump Rope, and more until the streetlights came on. We raked the leaves and jumped in the piles. In the Winter we built snow-forts, snowmen and had snowball fights. Kids had fun.Now days, they are attached to their video games and computers. Let's not forget that there was respect for authority, and God in our schools. But there was also disease, like Polio. T.B., measles. mumps. smallpox. There is good and bad about every generation. Just be happy with what you have.

They brought the introduction of vaps in as an aide to help people give up smoking and they are worse for the environment as they contain a battery in a plastic tube. They were not meant for long term use and they do just as much damage to your lungs than a cigarette. The only thing that should go into your lungs is air and hopefully unpolluted air if possible.

However we all like to reminisce about better times. It is called nostalgia. I do believe however the younger generations are missing out on a lot because of being introduced to too much technology and many become addicted to where even talking face face rather than texting is a real problem today. Children and youth do not get out and actually play or go into nature and the woods anymore. Do any of them even know what Red Rover is or New Orleans, Kick the Can, Annie Over, The various kinds of Tag? Do they know where food actually comes from beyond the local stores? Have they been to a ranch, a farm, an orchard, a dairy? Do they actually read a real book not an ebook or play real board games, like Scrabble, Yatzee, or card games anymore. Ride bikes and jump rope? Play hop scotch and four square? Do they know the words to songs and ever been on a Hay ride or barn dance? I believe Gen X, Boomers and older had a better childhood and time than today's youth but it is the fault of parents and society as well. Parents, Grandparents, teachers set the standard and expectations. If a lot of technology is introduced early ages kids tend to lose interest in reality. Do kids play with Lincoln logs, Legos, Building blocks and tinker toys any more. I have a granddaughter who has pretty much cut her kids off technology and gaming on the computer and or zoning out on movies and cartoons etc other than one hour a day. It has been a battle but now her children age 3-12 play more with one another, Read books and play board and card games and go on walks.

However, these days women and men smother themselves in smelly perfume, deodorant, after shave, etc. and it makes me violently ill. Yes smoking is unhealthy but it is not the only thing. fumes from cars are toxic, fumes from manufacturing etc. are toxic. I do think the times were better back then and the 1960's also but I do not have rose coloured glasses on either. We did not have the huge drug problem and violence nor the toxic culture on social media and the press that we have these days but health outcomes are better so that's a plus for the 2020's.

The day before (At this time Ibefore we leave the barracks for breakfast, we ha was at Fort Knox KY for my guardsman training which began Sept 1970 and ended May 1971 so I am a US Veteran having to take basic over again and AIT training when I broke my foot.) Thanksgiving it was 80F sunny and mild. The next day Thanksgiving it was minus 10F high winds and before we could go to chow, we had to shovel a path from the barracks to the mess hall! The weather reports had not seen this weather change coming at all but- the Farmers Almanac was right spot on- 3 feet of snow and drifts as high as the 2nd story of barracks on our base. BTW besides being famed as the gold vaults base and our former CO had been Patton who was killed after WW II ended by being hit by a jeep when he was leaving the officers club and Knox is famous as the home of the 5th Armored Cavalry Division- tanks corp. The other base famous for tanks is Fort Hood TX. BTW in sci fi lingo did you know that a 'warp' was 186 million miles per second- lightspeed. In most sci fi films and shows especially Star Trek, Warp 1 was the slowest speed for the starships?

Neighbours knew each other. You would go outside with friends from next door and spend your day having adventures with your banana seat and high handlebar bikes. There were no play dates or playing indoors all day alone on your computer. You used your imagination and hung out with the neighbourhood kids playing red Rover and kick the can or hide and seek.. Your phone was a game called telephone where you whispered a sentence into the next person's ear and by the time the last person heard it the sentence was completely different and funny. I loved the sixties and seventies a less stressful childhood.
