Discussion of the Day
FLOOR PRICING....it is for your own good....trust us....
APB21-Oct-24
The Australian Government appears to be investigating whether they can introduce floor pricing to the sale of alcohol...at a minimum $1.50 per standard drink....they say that this will stop the sale of cheap drinks...which they argue cause most related problems to drinking...however due to massive taxes which go up annually...the only drink this will affect is wine...leaving the cheapest bottle wine costing $10.50.....NOW if we have to pay $10.50 for a bottle of wine that actually costs $4.95...where does all this new money go to?....into the Government's pockets...it's the tax you are having when you didn't know you were being taxed...and it only affects the poorest people....smoke and mirrors...what do you think?

          • The only thing this government is interested in is taking more money from people to pay for their lavish lifestyle and turning us into a nanny state. Alcohol is like everything in moderation. My Granbfatgher and his brother both lived to 97 but always had a tot of whiskey evry night sot it cant be that bad.

                  • The tax is already so high on alcohol in comparison to other countries, this is just greed. it is also classist, when poor people want to spend money on cheap alcohol it’s trashy and bad for health, but if the rich buy expensive bottles and drink, it is seen as indulgent and classy
                    ·
                    • I don't drink alcohol so it doesn't affect me.

                      • More rubbish from the Government, how unusual. I just hope they are prepared for more crime especially from the kids. Buy what you want, don't buy to make a point, it's just going to end up the same regardless lose - lose for all involved except for the PM, he'll be able to buy another $4,000,000 mansion soon.

Both parties can do some good but they need to be made liable to misspends, useless stuff, ripping off the taxpayers with flights, dinners etc. Accountable in other words but they are not. As you say, it matters not which party.

It's just more government greed so they get more of our money to waste on idiocies. They like to claim the personal tax rate is 20% or 30%, but when you add up all these ridiculous extras (including they money the businesses have to pay from your purchases), it's more like 99%. 😠

They will also say that the Politicians are only doing this for their own good to stop them turning into Alcoholics. The reality however is that the Politicians are only doing this to increase their payments and are already Alcoholics.

                                            • Taxes, ideally, are used to pay for government services. Since booze (in all of it's variations) is not a necessity of life, but only a vice (until addiction takes over). The Government, insurance companies, other social services have to cover the costs when there are alcohol calamities. If taxes reduce the use of alcohol, saves lives, reduce spousal assaults, reduce addiction problems and the associated health care costs, then in my opinion...apply taxes full speed ahead. How much is a life worth?

They will just find a different way to do it and it maybe even in a worse way. All they are doing is punishing the responsible people who stay at home and have a relaxing drink. Wait until they find fentanyl like in San Francisco. That is what they are going to be pushing people into, cheap highs that cause permanent damage as they can't stand straight. Lying in the streets homeless, looking like they have died. Better the devil you know than the one you don't.

I always find it amusing how government thinks addiction must be like without a clue! Like here in Canada, first they ban drugs like oxy contin and cut thousands of people off their prescriptions thinking that will help the opioid problem. Then everyone, including seniors end up at the methadone clinics and buying off the street.. then fentanyl hits the street and all the addicts go to that since buying pills is crazy expensive, then they all started dieing and the methadone clinics start handing out Dilaudid and other narcotics to keep people from getting fentanyl... sometimes the gov isn't helping anyone, but is the burden itself! There's a van that drives around town handing out free drug supplies, there's paraphernalia all over the place! Where are these homeless addicts going to dispose of these things? On the street of course!
                                                                      ·

If the age restrictions aren’t working, explore why not? Slapping extra charges on products does zero. They will just turn to something else cheaper.
                                                                          ·
                                                                          • It’s a tax raising exercise, they know damn well that it won’t stop people drinking, just like tobacco tax doesn’t stop people smoking. I assume you did that survey about it recently then? The data in that survey was collected from WA only. Now why was that? And why did they choose WA? I think the answer is obvious, in that they chose it to skew the data results, due to the relatively high, poor, indigenous population there. If they raised the floor price of cask wine from $0.35 to 1.50 then they would also have to raise the floor price of coke and metho to $1.50 Now, before somebody jumps down my throat about being racist, I am not suggesting that all indigenous people in WA have a drinking problem, but it has been well documented that many of these indigenous communities do struggle with responsible alcohol consumption as well as abuse of other harmful substances as well. However, increasing the price of alcohol is unlikely to stop this abuse as they will just swap out the alcohol for something else or spend more of their food budget on it if it becomes more expensive.
                                                                            ·

No justification for this. We pay enough. Here is an idea. Why don't the politicians start paying for everything the average Aussie does. Also no government pension unless you serve a term of at least 20years as a parliamentarian, not just 1 or 2 years.
                                                                                ·

This does not just affect the poor, if they are poor they shouldn't be able to afford alcohol or tobacco. No one needs either, it's just peer pressure that gets people started on these addictions and it escalates from there. Govts have to get money from somewhere to bail out companies and banks so everyone can keep their jobs and keep moaning about how bad life is. People need to grow a spine and make their life what they want it to be, it's easily done without alcohol, drugs or tobacco.
