What defines "success?"
Carren 158519518-Nov-24
As I have got older, I have sometimes felt that I haven't been "successful" at anything throughout my life. I am not a lawyer, or a doctor, I don't have a University Degree, I am not rich, I have no specific "talents," have won no awards for anything, don't own property or flash cars. I am just an ordinary human being, who tries to live a "good" life (whatever that is!) as I move along this journey between birth and death.

How do you define "success?" Do you measure success by how much money someone earns or has? By the house and car they own? By the job they do? By how many sporting trophies they have displayed in their home?

Does anyone else ever have this feeling that you haven't "achieved" anything in life?

  • I once read of a philosopher who said, success is overrated. It has a time limit. When many of these people get old...they no longer are able to produce the same quality of work, if that be, write songs, movies, books. Some people are prob destined to be very successful. Is it genetic? Look at our great sports-people, they are limited as well, by age and time. Even if you feel a failure or have not achieved much, you can learn from adversity. I think it's more about how others look down on people that haven't achieved much, but there's often reasons why for this, unknown to some people. There are always snobs in society that put others down .

    • When you think more than half the world have very low incomes, or live in poverty, it's amazing that some of these people manage to enjoy life much . But many do, and I read about some Indians and Africans, and many seem pretty happy. So, happiness is a state of mind. You can be poor and still be happy. As long as you have your health. Not everyone can achieve Awards, or trophies, or become scientists, or lawyers. We are all good at something. Just do what your good at and become better. That's enough for most people.

      • A very good question! In modern times people in western countries are defined by their success. Their job, how much money, their education, how many friends or their popularity, the sort of house they live in, their make of car. But, at the end of the day, no amount of good fortune will save you from a coffin one day. It's only superficial. Some of these people are missing out on a lot of other things that doesn't cost the earth. Climbing a big mountain, charity work, looking after your family well, enjoying nature, helping the environment, etc. These acts are selfless and will probably last a lifetime compared to material things. There is a lot of pressure on kids today to be high achievers, that wasn't something my parents forced on us- growing up . Just being yourself and do the things you enjoy, that's what brings real pleasure. Many celebrities have millions, but are they really happy? So many cannot even keep a relationship going for long. I'd hate to be them. Money can give you lots more freedom, but only if you spend it wisely and aren't obsessed with material goods . These people are fools.

          • It is definitely more satisfying and fulfilling knowing that you have achievements and personal successes under your belt but ultimately it is really about what makes you feel happy and content. Ideal life partner, good friends, good paying job and financial stability and some travel are all key elements to living a happy life.

                • Success is having a happy home, raising your children to know Jesus and having a rewarding career. I was a teacher. I certainly didn’t make a lot of money but I feel like I touched a lot of kid’s lives and encouraged them to be good citizens and go to either college or a trade school. My kids are grown and I have grandchildren ranging from 4-8. I kept 2 of them for 2 years before they went to daycare. I felt blessed and successful doing that. I still work part time at a learning center tutoring kids ranging from 5-18 years old. This gives me great satisfaction seeing them learn. Success is not measured in dollars but rather happiness and satisfaction that you have made a difference in someone’s life.

                  • The only way I can define success is by speaking on what I have been through & told by other's!! My very first memory has shown me nothing but pain, hurt and betrayal!! But others looking in see someone who inspires them to keep going, break the negative family curse, stay positive and being true to yourself!! Set trends & witness how many people would want to follow

                    • I guess we all think that way at some stage in life. We have not moved mountains so we think we have not achieved success however success is not based on what we have not done. Success is being happy. Success is confidence. Success is raising healthy kids. Success is much more than being top of the class. Success is getting through life in one piece and so much more.

                            • I have achieved success, or the success I had always hoped for. I gave birth to 3 children who have given me no trouble during their lifetime. They didn't drink to excess or take drugs, they have always been employed and they are all now married and have given me 9 grandchildren. I can proudly say that 2 of my children attend church regularly and the other does have a belief in God so I consider my job done. I can stand before my creator and answer that I reared 3 decent, honest and God fearing people.

                                      • Sure Carren. But when our lives are so drastically affected by the actions of the very kings and queens elected to office its hard not to measure the success if others by the favours of friends. So to answer your question personally success to me is being illness free empathetic caring sharing and being happy with your lot.

Many who the world describe as successful in their own eyes feel little of that, whereas some who the world might define as losers feel that they are successful in their own modest accomplishments and do not need public approval from anyone.

Not everyone yearns for the same thing. I once listened to an entertainer planning their life 2 years ahead. I thought that was too hard for me.

With the amount of times I have come close to death I didn't have a successfull life, but I am still living so my life is successfull so far.

                                              • Success for some is having a lot of goals in life and accomplishing them one by one. For others it is just being content with what we have and having the love, support and care of family and friends. Having good health and enjoying each moment that comes. Success is different things to different people and as we mature and grow older sometimes we let some things go that are not as important as they once were. It is looking back at what you have done and being content with it and still having some goals to the future knowing maybe you will get there and maybe not but it is growing, learning and loving and living each day as it comes.

I do own a home and we have a small amount of money in the bank earning a meagre bit extra for us. Our car is a great car maybe a bit too big for us but we are holding off on buying a new car as we want to see what happens with EV's and for now they don't have the range we would need. Okay for city driving but not for rural Australia. Every one is different to what they rate success as. I believe if you have lived a happy and honest life then yes you are very successful and you haven't caused harm to any one else. Treated people with respect and common courtesy as you would want them to treat you the same way. We don't always get treated right by the people we would expect to treat us with love, compassion and understanding sadly. My way of thinking is it is their loss not ours and they'll never know what we were capable of because they never gave us the chances we needed to show them.

I still have a negative opinion of myself...depressed since I was 10 years old and it was neither recognized by myself or diagnosed till I was 43. I do have a fairly decent sense of humour but I also still have a dislike for most humans. So you tell me. LOL

Sometimes surviving the traumas, and struggles in one's life, is the greatest success of all. Congratulations on beating your addiction - 24 years sober is a HUGE achievement in itself. As for your sense of humour and general dislike of humans - welcome to the "warped sense of humour & don't much like people" club 😉
