Discussion of the Day
Your most memorable job.
Smiley09-Nov-22
Regardless if it was a paid job or volunteer work, what has been the most memorable job so far in your life, and what made it memorable?
For me, I guess it would be volunteering at my children's Primary school. I was fortunate enough to be trained to teach children struggling to keep up with their fellow classmates the MULTILIT Program. Once a week I would take the children one at a time and give them a MULTILIT lesson. The speed at which they learnt how to pronounce sounds and start reading was amazing. I once had a child who could not even identify the letters of the alphabet and within a Term or two, was identifying the letters as well as understanding how to make their sounds and had started reading simple story books.
Knowing you helped to completely change a child's life for the better has no monetary value- it's a priceless thing you can teach someone- how to read.

  • The best job I ever had was working for two Doctors in a Natural Therapies Clinic. I really had my eyes opened about the Medical Profession and I thank God every day for giving me that job.

      • Growing up i loved books so my most memorable job was working at a bookbinders, restoring old books, turning soft cover books into hard cover books for libraries. It was my first job & my favourite job. It was that first job that also made me realise i loved working with my hands & found i was quite creative.

                    • I only ever had to employers and did the same job for both, but by far the best job I ever had was raising my 3 children. I stayed at home, and yes we did without holidays and takeaway but I watched them all take their first step, speak their first words and I passed on to them my moral code and how to treat other people. Once the eldest went to work I re-entered the workforce which was 17 years later. I didn't miss one minute of my children growing up and I was fortunate enough to get to do it again with some of my grandchildren. My youngest turned 44 on Monday, I can't believe the years have flown by so fast but I'm so glad that I got to spend his formative years with him.

                      • This is hard to answer, so I’m not going to really. I have too many stories of memorable jobs, some for good reasons, some not so much so, and so many memorable workforce experiences, being in a bank robbery, heading to the pub eveytime the Tax Office had to be evacuated due to a bomb threat ( we could never go back for the day as we decided it was potentially too dangerous), creating havoc at McDonalds at Piccadilly Circus so that I could be punished and sent down the corridors to scrub the grouting with a toothbrush ( and hang out with the Danish girls down there preparing the salads), observing the ‘ ladies’ at the spring racing carnival getting their hats stuck in the window trying to put a bet on with me 1 hour after the Melbourne Cup has run ( get to watch them chucking up with glass imbedded in their feet passed out on the track too). Then there’s the altruistic stuff, but that’s boring!

                        • The job I enjoyed the most, and worked at the longest, was in Georgia, working with adults with disabilities. I worked at Fine Finish in Danielsville for 8 1/2 years. The only job I rushed to every day. I started out part time at 20 hours a week, and left a salaried Instructor. I still miss working there.

                            • Before I did my nursing diploma, I worked in Aged care first as a Voli part-time for a few years, then as a nurse assistant ***gold*** I love the oldies, so many wonderful lives they led, so many stories they told - amazing. I felt privileged caring for them in their twilight years. Alas, nursing in acute care per se, now sucks :( (I still miss the caring for ppl) but I got out of acute care nursing because I could not nurse the way I wanted to (looking after pt's in a holistic way). So now I facilitate looking after (work health & safety) the healthcare staff who look after the pt's. Drive the safety management system for over 5,000 + staff. ugh...roll on retirement Co VID has been brutal... :(

Where abouts are you located ? there are plenty of centres Aust wide and always looking for keen volunteers - there are stacks of jobs that need doing, and even if you are unable to actually assist with the riders, (as it can be hard walking in the sand) you could be a spotter, be on Committee, fundraise, the jobs are endless.

I live on Whidbey island, off the coast of WA state, in the United States. I know they used to have a stable for people with disabilities, where they could ride a horse with someone leading them, but I'm 75 this month, and I'm more fragile, and have less energy than I did, even 2 1/2 years ago. • My most memorable job was working as a teacher's aide in my local middle school. I started out as a substitute teacher aide, after my youngest daughter started full day school. The next year I had recieved an offer of a full-time position with a Special Ed teacher that I had worked with many times as a sub. My first day as a full-time aide, I walked into my first class which just happened to be my oldest daughter's class. Several kids said, "Erin, Your Mom is here". I I discovered that I loved working with these kids, many of whom had learning disabilities. I never wanted to be a full time teacher, as I observed the stressful jobs they experienced, dealing with lesson plans, curriculimum, parental meetings, tests to prepare, papers to grade, and on and on, Kids would often ask me why I wasn't a teacher, and I would always tell them that when I went home at night, my job done, but teachers work was never done. I retired 5 years ago, after 20 years, and I feel that I have made a big difference in many of these young lives.

We were all beginners (2004) and I had recently finished Uni. As we would entered into the Coles staff room we would feel the periodic shaking of the floor (air ventilation unit). There was also a very cooling sea-breeze blowing outside the shopping area, being close to the ocean. Indoors it felt as though we were next to a volcano that was shaking the floor every so often :P

In high school, I had to do volunteer work so I always did mine at my local primary school. Collecting and making teacher resources, running errands, helping in the classrooms, whatever anyone needed to save them time. I loved doing that. My job at a cafe taught me a lot about what I could do and my job at a service station taught me how to navigate a bad situation and showed me my limits mentally

We cleaned banks, medical offices, car lot offices, lawyers' offices. But the memories are about being in banks and the alarms not set when we enter, doors not locked. One time a police officer parked behind us and wanted to search my car for no reason. But the craziest memory is when a crew member forgot a key to a bank in his car and we couldn't get in touch with him. My boss wanted to know if I could jimmy a window open... What?!? NO!!! I didn't work there much longer because she started to have mental issues I couldn't deal with.

This gave them a chance to socialise if they lived on their own, or gave their carers a break if they lived with family. Was such fun (also a lot of responsibility) and we had a varied program with some of my friends as volunteers to run the program it honestly didn't feel like work.

You can teach them numbers by asking them the street numbers as you go for a walk. You can teach them to read comics, catalogues whatever. The old way we were taught back in the 50's still holds true today. I have had a lot of jobs from waitressing, cook, office worker, and many more. Each has their pluses and minuses but not have been all that memorable except when I used to go to the homes of the rich and famous. Learnt how some of the other half lived. Never felt jealous though but interested.
