Discussion of the Day
Cashless Pay
09-Feb-21
Do you use Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or, even Google Pay? What about PayPal or other online banks?
Do you feel they are safe? Will Cash be a thing of the past, like bartering? Rarely used and rarely accepted? What are your thoughts on this change that seems to be inevitable?
Comments
  • Just Paypal. I am going to start using cash again after a conversation with a Cafe owner a few days ago. He said he would prefer it as sit costs him more with his fees.

    • From this day forward I am going to pay with cash as much as I possibly can.
      ·
      • Yes, my cash was all full of Covid so I had to burn it....
        ·
        • They can only take every freedom and right away from you if you are stupid and lazy enough to let them...which we probably are...
          ·
          • I can remember the feeling of satisfaction when we used to get paid in cash, kept a little for expenses, train or bus fares lunch money and paid board and the rest got put in the bank and it stayed in the bank. None of this direct deposit and losing track of how much gets withdrawn bit by bit for all and sundry to track where you spent what. I only use PayPal to receive survey payments and am quick to transfer it to a real bricks and mortar bank account. Don't like the way the banking system is heading with all the online no face to face person contact ... not knowing who of what purpose your money is being used as it accumulates a pitance in interest.
            ·
          • I refuse, prefer to pay cash. Why should others be able to track your spending. And your more accountable if you pay with cash, card you tend to spend more than you should

            • as long as you watch the pennies and pay the bill at the end of the month which isnt always possible. and yes paypal.

              • don't do payments using my phone, and will not do any banking via phone, only on my home pc or laptop
                ·
                • Don’t use it and found it difficult the other day when I left my phone at home we went to a restaurant and the only you could only look at the menu via QR code and pay via Apple Pay.
                  ·
                  • I don't like it but it will happen.
                    ·
                    • I don't like cashless social that when people's lossing they right with out cash. For me and husband we sometimes used cash for somethings and others time the card. I feel having cash on me i don't used that much more money but with a card i used more money.
                      ·
                      • Cashless Society is inevitable, as cards and electronic payments give big brother more control
                        ·
                      • eventually we'll become cashless society?
                        ·
                      • Cash will always be used
                        ·
                        • It took me ages to start using a credit card. Growing up you only bought goods and services if you had the cash available or wrote a cheque. (A mortgage was the only exception.) I do not feel comfortable using any “xxxPay” and will hold off as long as possible.
                          ·
                          • personally prefer cash gives me more ability to live within means

                            • Apart from death, the only thing certain in life is change, and things are changing on the pay front. It's ages now since the pay trolley came round and we got cash.
                              ·
                              • You forgot taxes.. (With regards to certainty)

I didn't forget taxes. I have some rich friends who don't pay taxes. I didn't for over a year when I wasn't working either.

                            • This is something that is going not only upset me but thousands of others like me, I refuse to use a credit card or any of the above mentioned, Many of us Oldies are not interested in Smart Phones or going online, esp when it comes to online shopping, it took me 3 goes to get it right, and I am dammed if I am going to give anyone the right to use my eftpos card. Call me Old Fashion if you wish
                              ·
                              • I use paypal which is good but i think there will still be cash in the future.
                                ·
                              • Hmm, I remember when people were handed their wages in cash. It didn't have to go into a bank account so the banks were left having to pay reasonable interest to get deposits. Now the banks get your money before you do. In addition when you had to actually pay cash, people watched their money more carefully. It's so easy to satisfy the "now" impulse when you don't need to worry about paying 'till later. No wonder there's so much debt. In those days, you could be robbed, but that hasn't really changed, just the method.

                                • It may become a cashless society but not for another generation as there are still a lot of older people who do not do internet banking I only use internet banking.,Eftpos and Visa. I also always carry a small amount of cash in case of emergencies that is enough to cope with

                                                    • Cash was also invaluable for people who lived in Black Summer bushfire areas last year, when eftpos terminals went down. No access to money, no buying food, petrol etc when cash was all that could be accepted.
                                                      ·
                                                  • Many people use PayPal for online transactions. We may need cash when we go to the weekend markets or if there's an outage that affects the Eftpos machines and ATMs. Also, I don't want to hand over my card to my older kids if they want to go buy a Slurpee or something at 7-Eleven.

                                                        • The younger generation are really into all this IT stuff and do everything on their phones including having conversations with someone right next to them. I feel sorry for the way the world is going and they seem to accept all the changes some for the better but mostly just for the betterment of corporations and governments. Too ready to hand over their lives to these machines.

                                                            • I do not use the online banks etc. I use a credit card or my efpos card. I still have cash for smaller purchases, etc. The governments have been trying to ditch cash for years and Covid has bought it closer I feel. It may stop a lot of illegal dealing in cash but what will the tooth fairy leave for the children then etc.

I used to like getting my pay in cash because it represented something special. One thing with cashless pay it is a little easier to save a little. I do still enjoy having a small amount of cash in my wallet just in case. If you go to an atm your card could be kept in the machine because there is not enough money in it. That is a real pain because you have to get another one sent to your home in the snail mail.
                                                                    ·

I really hope we don’t become a cashless society ... my kids used to get so excited about finding money in exchange for a lost tooth or given a few coins to have a ride in the shops, a couple of dollars for their bank accounts or their Aunt giving them 50 cents for a sweet treat or the neighbours next door a few dollars for odd jobs ... I think a cashless society will make people even less aware of what they purchase and end up causing more debt
                                                                            ·

I have been hacked before so I am very careful. I only use PayPal for online purchases, I find it safer, still like to have cash, what happens when all the ATM, Eftpos machines go down?
                                                                                ·

I don't use internet online banking at all as I feel it is unsafe. Even using a credit card is fraught with danger. I hope cash does not disappear but feel it will eventually as the Governments have been heading that way for years. Covid has bought it closer.
                                                                                  ·

As for cash it will always be here for people to use. If the internet goes down for any length of time your online accounts are useless. When the bushfires hit certain area's people couldn't access their money. Also some smaller stores have limits where they will accept cards. Do you give them a card to swipe? No cash will always be needed.

Handed over $100 at the bank with the form filled out (it's been quite a few years since I've stepped foot in a bank). Teller said you'll have to go next door to get change as we don't hold money here anymore!!!! Huh?? A bank with no money?? I'm so confused. And my son and his mate went to open an account with a closer bank (we're in a regional town not the big smoke). They had their ID and cash from work but were told they have to do it online. His mate said "But we're here now? Why not now?" My mind boggles! Also you need cash to put in the donation buckets, just wouldn't look right swiping a card!

I use PayPal for online transaction - I load amazon gift cards to my amazon account - in physical stores - I use credit cards issue by the physical store (earning cash will using the credit cards) - and I use a reloadable debit card (my retirement is direct deposit to my reloadable debit card) and I use general credit cards (earning cash for using credit cards). The rent, telephone bill, electric bill (reside in a building that only use electricity), internet bill, water bill, and income taxes (state and federal ) - I have vision issues (I use the ADA (Americans with Disability Act - means I have to be accommodated) - pay these bills - full amount every time over the phone - I pay by phone (landline) - using my reloadable debt card! I only use cash when traveling overseas. Pay the full amount on my credit cards before the due date to get cash rewards on credit cards!

I live in Melbourne and will be attending the Australian Open 2021 and the tournament is advised as covid safe and the entire site will only be taking cashless payments. So debit or credit card, When I buy items online the primary way I pay has been via paypal for a long time pre covid. I find paypal is no issue. I rarely use cash but use it on some occasions. Be interesting to see what others feel.

The only cashless part last year was a few outlets. The main areas all happily accepted cash. Now I am in lockdown due to HQ workers as no official community transmisson the whole state suffers as do the players as we can't cheer them on.
