Free travel service to work through the company
Cynthia 131925204-Jun-23
As a person who doesn't own my own vehicle, this is something I struggle with as I'm job hunting. I notice a lot of companies say: "must have full G license with own vehicle." I see that I'm qualified for the job and can take public transport, but am unable to apply to the job since I don't have a vehicle.
Even though I have my G2, I can't afford a vehicle right now. I find it unfortunate that I have to miss out on job opportunities because of this.
If certain companies a free travel service to get to work, I think that would be a great idea for people like myself.

There are some big businesses in Australia (in suburban Sydney anyway) that do have buses that take a particular route and only pick up their employees. Not many do it, but they do exist. Other businesses offer company cars but the vast majority of workplaces expect you to make your own way to work.

Reality, not going to happen. Sorry. But maybe a brand new innovative company that has lots of money to spend on transportation for new employees. Just have to find it. Good luck.

I understand it's not fair, but if tax money goes to that service every other service was have a drop in funds

Yeah I don't get it. I use bus service as well. I get no perks from my job. We are unionized and pay dues yet no discount and make minimum wage. Company need to do better.

I find this somewhat confusing. If a job is asking for a person with a licence and vehicle it indicates to me that it involves driving and you will be required to use your vehicle. You wouldn't be able to go to any old place on public transport because it simply doesn't go everywhere and it's time consuming.

Poor company want to use your vehicle for their way of making a profit on you , even if you can make it go trough with the taxation system deduction ,i would not advise ,if you own your own transport you can start your own little work business, start small !

Have you tried to apply? Or contact the company somehow? If you manage to get an interview you might be able to get the job - and a car! Don’t give up

Yes! Cynthia should the company require you to have a vehicle and you are qualified foe the job, company should ideally lend you a vehicle at least until you can purchase one. More than the vehicle they should value the appropriation of the person's qualifications for the job. How unethical some employers are?

This is a good incentive to reduce cars on the road, traffic jams, accidents etc which can cause staff to be late, or have other challenges. free public transport would be beneficial for all, including the environment

That would be an idea, but there would definitely have to be some restrictions. You would have to live within a certain distance from your place of work. There would have to be a limit for obvious reasons. Also, if they give you a vehicle for work, you could use it for personal reasons too. Where I worked, I was rather upset with the situation. The secretaries had to have their own vehicles which I had no problem with. However, the men (who were foresters) were allowed to take their assigned work vehicle to home in case they were called out from home to a forest fire. They did this year around fire season or not. I didn't think that was fair. I'm sure they probably drove the vehicle wherever they wanted and used them for their own purposes since they were trucks and not cars (most of them). They had turn in automotive reports as the end of each month with the mileage to and from and where they went. The beginning mileage had to equal the ending mileage of the month previous. That can easily be adjusted to not show personal use. Some of them had days, that weren't even filled in, and I had to fudge those days with a guess as to what they did the day before and where they went. It was nothing but playing with numbers to please the employer which, by the way, was the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania! We girls never had that luxury or several others that had nothing to do with being foresters instead of secretaries. For instance, we were told that when we drive a state vehicle, we had to pump our own gas. We mentioned that one day, and the guys told us they never pumped their own gas! Also, it took several of them about an hour to go get the mail in the morning in the state vehicle, of course. If none of the men were in, which was rare, one of the secretaries took her own car, went to get the mail and right back! We know they went for coffee!!! I was afraid to ever mention it, but I sure wanted to. I think one day I dropped a hint. My boss did NOT seem to like women. I actually sued the state because I had a nervous breakdown because of my workload, and I lost. You can't fight the state and win! I have not been able to work since. It has taken me many, many years to regain what sanity I have left. My brain had shut down completely. I actually could not process anything people were saying to me. That's how bad I was affected by my boss's attitude that I didn't have too much work! They blamed it on the death of my father who had recently died a horrible death from cancer. I didn't even take a day off to visit Dad in the hospital because we weren't allowed to take time off! I wish I had told him to kiss my ass, walked out and went to spend time with my dad! Losing my job wasn't an option since we had a home mortgage. My husband said we would lose our house. We didn't. I applied for disability retirement which was a huge effort to get, and we kept the house! Sorry, but the pain is still with me since 1988!

Well yes I see a problem here. I do not drive because of a vision issue, I am not blind but can not drive, I have tried and it was not a good thing. I can take public transportation with the bus but it has been a bit unreliable recently so there is that. I need a job but it is hard to get one when you are unable to drive, I can do a lot of jobs but it is hard to apply with that circumstance. I at least do not give up....

I've never heard of this, but I can understand the public transport issue, especially with appointments, for example a job interview. Things can go wrong and it costs a fortune! Something that would help in those issues would be great

I've never heard of anyone needing to have a license or car for a job unless it entails driving at some stage for the position. I was fortunate in most of my jobs, I could drive cars, as I had got a license and a car, but when I first started out, working for a garage, I didn't have either, but they took me on and I eventually got to drive brand new cars for them. Great job.

It was never a condition of my employment when I was working. But I do believe if you want a job you get there by your own transport, they are responsible for that.

I guess it is up to the company and wether they can afford to do some thing like that. I never had it when I worked not that I have worked much. There is no public transport where we live so we rely on our car for all our travelling needs, I also think this would apply to where a person lived too.

Interesting isn't it? Our Politicians grant themselves Free Air Travel including that to all those lovely overseas places where they stay at the Best Hotels, Eat at the Best Restaurants all of which they make the Taxpayers pay for, Free Public Transport in and around their home towns, they make the Taxpayers provide them with the Motor Vehicle of their choice and then we pay for all the Fuel, Servicing & Registration and other costs connected to it. If they conveniently arrange for their Parliament to sit beyond a certain time they then get us to pay them hundreds of dollars to stay in apartments, houses etc., which are owned by their husband, wife or nominated family member if single. They CHOOSE to enter politics and then expect, and get, to live a life almost Free of Charge all the while they collect Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in salaries. Everything they do have to spend out of their own very deep pockets which are connected to their so-called "work" becomes a Legal Tax Deduction. Now look at the other side. Yours and mine. We have to Pay for our own transport to and from work but are not allowed to have those costs as a Tax Deduction. If we are sent away for work, yes our Employers pay the fares and hotel plus a Daily allowance - probably almost enough to buy a hamburger or some other Junk food and if we want to eat better quality then we have to pay for that out of our own pockets butr we can't use that extra expense as a Tax Deuction. Our employers can use what that trip costs them as a Legitimate Tax Deduction!

You help with the gasoline. There are companies that ask for clean licenses due to you may have to drive company vehicles from time to time.

If the job requires travel during work while working mostly from the office, then they should really have the option to provide a company car (even if only a couple of office share cars) or repay fuel costs for your personal care. A job that requires you travelling all day should also offer a company car.I have noticed there is a job here for early morning newspaper distribution that says you have to have your own vehicle which must be either 91 petrol or electric ... obviously they don't want to pay higher prices of the higher octane / less polluting petrols.

Really annoying when you know the job is not difficult and would require minimal training (which they would have to give you any way since you have to be shown how to specifically use their systems and applications etc). Let's face it, it is not rocket science to input information in a system or application YET companies will specify that you have to have had administrative experience for x years and no more than y years ago and preferably on systems z yet "full training will be provided". These jobs are mainly advertised as a custom and they already have people in mind for them (either people who have gotten temporary jobs within a company, work for a different section or have the job in a temporary capacity at that level or other family or friends are teed up for it...YES nepotism still exists). How is one supposed to get experience unless you have a job in the first place? Even more ridiculous when they want YOUNG people and expect them to have experience AND have finished year 12. Where are these people expected to have jobs that can live up to the industry that is advertising them? Most kids that work have casual retail or hospitality jobs and these jobs are not seen as "good enough" for what certain companies are looking for. They say that this current generation is too fussy for jobs, conditions and employers but I can say that in the last decade, employers have had unrealistic expectations on WHO they might grant an interview to on the basis of their education and experience (and even if you get this far, and be experienced and educated, you still won't get the job even if you aced the interview). Some people would be old enough to remember the old days when employers were happy that people wanted to work, had a good attitude and were willing to learn and they actually hired you with or without experience or education, We need to give people a go and not just keep putting more ridiculous hurdles and higher and impossible to leap hurdles in front of them.

If employer’s are asking for a specific license, is one thing, owning a car is another. My hubby doesn’t have a license, uses public transport, I drop him off at the closest bus stop, and of late his employer has given him petrol vouchers, to help us cover costs, so I believe everything is negotiable…

I have always paid for my transport to and from my place of employment sometimes involving 2 trains, walking, etc. I do not think you can ask your potential employee to pay for this. Next you will be wanting free meals, clothing, etc. When I started work we never had any child care, no maternity leave and definitely not for the fathers, and even superannuation was not common. Uniforms such as for cooks, waiters and chefs outfits were never supplied neither were the tools of any trade. Perhaps you can still apply for the job advising you are not yet in a position to buy a car but you do have your G2 and would they consider you for the employment. Worth a try.
