Discussion of the Day
Have You Ever Been A Scam Victim?
Rosey29-Jan-25
A call came in and said a bench warrant had been issued for my husband's arrest and gave the name of an officer at the local police dept. I called them on my phone, they said they had an officer by that name, but he was assigned as a school crossing guard. My husband kept them on the phone and drove to the police dept. He handed the phone to an officer, and the scammer hung up. I don't think he has called again.

        • I’m a victim of a Scammer most days…. From Rewardia’s surveys 😂😂

          • On phone scams I ask them if they think their mum would be proud of what they are doing? Or I say I'm a DCI at a murder scene and will need all their details. That's the PG version's.

            • Yes. Felt so stupid but my bank were amazing and eventually got everything back. It's so dodgy.

              • and half of the time you dont get your money back.
                ·
                • We almost did. Pretending to be a buyer over fb market. But then we realised he was a scammer and told them that we need to do a police check on him. He quickly hung up the phone and would not answer our calls back.

                  • I got that call a few times in the past, but saying the IRS notified them I had overdue taxes, or something like that. I usually just play along, then they hang up on me lol. One person said he was an officer and even threw out a badge number. I responded something like... Thanks for calling me and giving me a heads up there's a warrant for my arrest, I'm off to Mexico....and he hung up.

Oh the so called police officer also said I can pay my debt to avoid being arrested. I played along at first and said ok, how do I pay and he said credit card over the phone. Yeah right lol! I don't understand how people would think it was real, but people get scammed like this.

l know.. idiots. I had a woman once telling me someone had tried to send $700 from my account to a person overseas but not to worry they were going to stop the payments and asked me all sorts ..if I had used my computer outside the home and where . If I had used the account in the last day etc . Then she asked me to read out a " security code " l could hear a click like a recording was going on .and the numbers she was reading out began with CRN. ( which is our welfare systems number code) I was already suss as firstly i didn't have that in my accounts anyway haha but that nailed it. I kept quiet .Asked her to repeat ..then she kept asking me to say it to confirm things and proceed with her crapola security procedures. I said no I won't be repeating your code is there anything else? She started stammering and got flustered as she'd spent a good 20 mins wasting her time with her manager listening in l reckon... Lol. She tried again I told her again the same thing then she just hung up !

                            • Usually at least once a day I’ll get either a phone call or text or email from some scammer but I’m so used to it now I don’t answer the phone unless I know the number …. Texted are deleted and no blocked and emails also deleted … never ever trust anything you get always check through a legitimate source

                              • I get daily phishing emails but they are usually very easy to spot and I go by the rule that if it looks too good to be true it probably isn't true.

                                • I've had a lot of attempted phishing emails/phone calls but always skeptical and vigilant so never been a victim. I have had my credit card number used, not stolen per say as I didn't lose my card or have its details leaked in a data breach or used on a dodgy website, I've been told what's most likely is that a random credit card number generator scam tried it, saw it worked and tried again for a larger amount. Luckily it was pretty fast and easy with my bank to replace/change my card and get all my money back, but it definitely made me feel exploited or violated or something, very upsetting. Even if you don't fall for upfront scam attempts you can still be a victim of fraud these days which is depressing.

                                  • No I have not been scammed but my husband has been caught twice and we have had to cancel our credit card and get a new one. While I have not been a victim of a scam I have had fraudulent transactions on my credit card twice and both times I have been inconvenienced having to wait for a new card. I had credit card with another financial institution for many, many years without a problem but since getting this new card it has happened twice. They won't ever give me the details but I would love to know what they are trying to buy and have me pay for it.

Warn your elderly parents and grandparents not to say yes to anything over the phone to strangers. A bank or the social security office will never call you and ask for personal information.

                                                                ·
                                                                • I come from the younger generation that is quite averse to answering their phones for any reason, it started out as a socially-nervous thing but in this day and age now, there are so many scam calls and even answering them gives them the info that your number is active/in use which they can try to exploit somehow, so in the end it seems to be the smartest thing to do to just not answer any calls if you don't know the person/are expecting a call. Straight to voicemail for me haha
                                                                  ·
                                                              • The question was have you ever been scammed, so the answer is a simple yes or no, no wonder people get scammed when they don't read what they have before them, idiots

                                                                  ·

Stupid me thinks this is good as I can get a IPad for grandson. So filled out details and used debit card. Nothing came but they used debit card to charge for things. Bank was quick to stop them and refund money. I have noticed other electrical stores name being used for same thing. Harvey Norman, Bunnings, Good Guys and others. SO if you see on Facebook offers to buy out of date, excess items GIVE IT a big fast bypass as scams
                                                                    ·

Too easy for it to be dodgy! I always use traditional retailer websites even if it takes a bit longer. Facebook in particular seems to be absolutely full of scams and spam these days

I'd talk to some for months and play along. When the time came to send them money, I confess that I knew they were wanting to scam me from day one! I even virtually married a "general" who wanted me to take his daughter so she could go to school here! Wouldn't he send her to the best private school he could find!!! That was fun and entertaining since I have no life One guy even asked me to teach him how to NOT be a scammer and said he loved me! I couldn't get rid of him, but it was hilarious!!!

One street savvy kid would get all the other kids to bang on my pots and pans really loudly… I stopped getting calls from strange men with accents after that

It works very well and you will know quickly if someone is making fraudulent transactions on your card over the set limit. And of course, you can set the total daily limit withdrawal also, same as for bank accounts.

What started out as a small purchase turned into a cc drainage. The scammers got too greedy and spread my cc number everywhere. I didn't notice until I tried to use my cc and instead of money on the card the account was dry. Fortunately for me, it was a cash in advance card. I didn't have much money on it so I didn't lose very much. Now the cc company is doing a charge back. Remember, be careful. It may be best to use a cash only card for internet purchases. Besides there is no interest charges and you can only lose what you put in. If I had used one of my high limit cards I would be sunk.

Then more money came out I did not authorise, I did get that back. The scammers always take a small amount then more. We were trying to sell some thing and some how the scammers got our card number and did that. Took a little and then tried for more. So we called the bank and said no more out of our account and a little time later more money came out after we had said no more. The lady at the bank said oh they had to wait for the conversion fee to come out too. So that was the last straw we marched down to the bank and pulled a majority of our money out of there. We only ever have small amounts in that account. Our other bank has way more security which is peace of mind for us. I got an email from a family friend wanting us to go buy an apple gift card and once we had gotten the card to give him the numbers so he could give them to his sick friend. Driving into town hubby asks How do we know this isn't a scam? Good question I will call Dad. So I rang my Dad and he said it was a scam so we went shopping and when we got home we looked at the emails and even the email address had changed from bigpond to outlook. I had checked the first email but as we were corresponding back and forth I hadn't been so we just deleted all emails and blocked the email address. Pays to have some wits about you as the scams are getting more sophisticated. Stay safe and look out for each other. If you fall for some thing let others know as I always do so we can be a little smarter than the blighters that try to pull the wool over our eyes and so we don't fall for them again or ever.

I was asked to log into a website and go through the process of purchasing a new mobile phone, but the whole thing would be fake. So I did as asked and lo and behold I had a confirmation that I had ordered a new mobile phone. I very quickly made a phone call to JB HiFi and, I had indeed ordered a new mobile phone. Fortunately I was able to cancel the transaction.

I am a chronic non-answerer to most calls because I never make personal calls/people know not to call me so chances are any calls are just a scam, but then I have been occasionally saved by seeing the name of my local chemist/mechanic etc show up while it's ringing and that's reminded me I used them recently and they want to follow up something. Maybe phone calls should require a short text blurb first to say who/what the call's going to be about haha.

Remember when before all the electronic gear, swiping cards, waving phones across a reader business used a paper-based system in which theu put a slip of paper along with your card and swiped the machine across it? For a while, and indeed not so long ago, when the system creashed businesses could still use the old paper system. I bought something and used my card, the assistant said the system was down and that she would use the paper system. That was fine. Then about a week later my Bank, Bless'em, phoned me and asked me if I was still in Australia. Someone in Ireland had used my card to book up over $7000 worth of Air Travel.. The bank stopped the payment and issued me with a new card with a new number.

The first couple of times I used Temu (Chinese version of ebay) I had a double charge the first time on my card (I had to cancel it & order a new one) so I decided to use Paypal the next time & they tried to do a money request order for a mobile phone I didn't buy (reported the seller and denied payment). It's almost like they are testing you out. I've used it numerously since then without any issues but I'm always hypervigilant. Moral of the story is always use Paypal when shopping online, never use a bank transfer or a credit card with a large limit unless you use your bank's secure payment platform for any online shopping so you have better security & an avenue for investigation and recovery if you do get scammed.

AliExpress supposedly says that sellers can't see your email but I've read numerous other reports from people of this happening, could well be AliExpress itself selling our data too I guess. Paypal all the way, and 'report as phishing' for all the emails that do weasel in so you might get the origin account shut down.

She was lonely and fell for someone who contacted her on Facebook as a friend. They ( it was not just one person) scammed her over a period of six months and she lost a heap of money to them.It really broke her heart and her bank balance. Remember, many Facebook 'friend' applications are not real people. Look at their Facebook page and they are usually a widower, and have a job that moves them round the world - why else would you send money to them to get them out of a hole? They have few friends and little background to show. Her scammer had actually taken someone's identity and photos from a Swiss MP!! Beware lonely hearts!!

I wasn't really sure about the site so fortunately; I used a visa gift card I got from doing surveys and there was only $10. They got the $2 the music was supposed to cost and never gave me the music but then they tried to bill the card $35 more and of course, it was denied.

The CRA robs me repeatedly, under the oft stated guise of spending the funds wisely, and on only what is necessary, like Turdopes 24 carat underwear. Others, apparently thinking age equals stupidity, try scams all the time. Unfortunately, I went to school when they taught you how to read, write, do math in your head, and most of all think, not wander around aimlessly all day, with ear buds on, staring vacantly into a small lit up rectangle

And although the bank account number for the policy was different the money for the policy was deducted from my account. The policy was from a subsidiary of the bank I used at the time. It took years for me to get to the it reversed.I never found out who initiated the policy and was told that it was highly probable that someone with my exact name had applied and there was a mix up with removal of funds. I was lucky a parent of a child in my care was a financial advisor at a different branch of my bank investigated it on my behalf. Basically it came down to a phone recording of the person who started the claim and the time the call was made. I could prove that I was on shift at work on the day/ time in question and had done the same shift for 10years with the same employer. I was eventually repaid all funds and all incurred fees by my bank. Then changed banks.

I'm always waiting for my Indian mate to give me a phone call or text me to ask if I am having trouble with my computer. Then " let the game begin"." Good game leading them on and seeing if I can set myself a new record for wasting their time. I guess whilst I am doing that it is preventing them being on their phone trying to scam someone else. I just wish I could scam a scammer out of thousands and thousands. Am working on it.
