Discussion of the Day
Workmates from previous jobs.
JANET R05-Jul-22
Have you kept in touch with workmates from previous jobs? I have from the last two jobs I had, and it is really great to have a catch up now and again and talk about "old times"
I wish I had stayed in touch with more of my workmates - I often used to think about them, but never followed up on it.
What about you?

Yes, I have, and they have rallied around me this year after my husband died suddenly. Don't know what I would have done without them

One of my best buddies/colleagues met when we both worked in neighboring hosp wards in the 90.s- we sat next to each other in the office and hand wrote our reports in those days, in between yakking. Disclaimer no patients were harmed. She left first and went to another job, i followed and then we ended up still working in another Practice together- 20 years later. She is a gem:) And still good friends with another colleague who's job i moved into after she left. And keep in touch with another dear pal/colleague who lives in the US now. My big sis who is now 70 (12 yrs older than me) still meets up with her nursing pals from back in their wild times in the 70's!

No never and never had that many jobs I could do that with. Except working with the Ex and no way are we keeping in touch. That person can go die in the gutter like it should and rot in hell as far as I am concerned. Worked for years and never got any super nor any real help. I did enjoy the work but will never be able to do that again which saddens me some.

Anyone who was worth contacting has passed away. Many of the others I'd rather forget. They probably don't remember me anymore.

I have also worked with other people some 20 years ago and one friend recently whom I worked with 47 years ago came to visit while travelling through our neighbourhood. . I am retired now but still remain in contact with many past workmates who are friends.

Social media is one way to keep in touch with people with whom I have worked in the past. Linked in is a good way to follow their careers and they yours. Staying in touch can also be a possible networking strategy because they can perhaps refer you to other job openings should you be looking for one.

When I retired from my last job, I had every intention of staying on as a substitute teacher aide, but the school district never contacted me about it, and I found that I didn't really miss it, and along came COVID and quarantine and hybrid scheduliing and all that. I am perfectly happy staying home with my husband.

That lasted all of 1 day. The next day I had 13 of the people who used to work under me when I was at IBM come to my door asking for work along with a list of clients a mile long. So much for working lightly 2 days a week and having time to spend on my hobbies or build Race Motors again which I loved doing. That was now 37.5 years ago all of those who came knocking are still working for me and all of the clients that they bought with them are still paying the bills and the only time I get to look at any hobby is in my dreams as every time I set aside some time to do something at least 3 people turn up with major issues that takes all my time and lots more to solve their issues and the RC Aircraft I started building before Covid sits on the bench with nothing done to it in at least the past 3 years and all the bits of Carbon Fiber I had cut to reinforce the wings have fallen out and at the very least messed up so I don't know where they came from but most likely lost when they fell to the floor and I didn't get time to pick them up. Take Yesterday for example the Feds turned up wanting to know why I was refusing to do work for a client we had had for about a decade when he took the VERY GOOD Advice of the current Leader of the Opposition and moved all his data into the Cloud in a form of RED TAPE Cutting by the Defense Department a year or so ago and has been cracked along with all of his so called Security Data which is the exact reason I told them we would no longer be trying to help them secure their data any longer because we could not control the place that the then Federal Government had setup to "Save Them Money" Apparently it is my fault that the previous Federal Government was full of idiots who didn't know that gravity pulls things towards the ground and that a Foreign State Actor would only need a few fractions of a second to break their nonexistent security. They where running a highly Secured Cloud with plain Data being feed into it and plain data being sent out of it I wonder how anyone could crack the system. The Fed in question didn't understand the real issue as he was only caring on about this places Bank Interface as some money had gone missing a couple of million sure but the System prevented this from happening so it had to be my fault because we where no longer supporting that business to stop things like that happening. I just asked how many clients where actually logged into this supposedly Secured Cloud of the Governments and then suggested that every one had been cracked so whom ever did it had everything that they wanted and he had better speak to ASIO or someone to investigate the mess that had been made by people who do not understand what they are attempting. I also pointed out if I was going to be charged with this breach I would have to name the Politician who set it up as the real culprit and that didn't go down so well as he thought I was playing Politics. I just insisted I had no control over this place could not even be sure that they had changed the default Passwords on the hardware and yet I was supposed to secure the place when I could do nothing to stop security breaches. As it turns out the Routers have the Default Password as well as all the Servers that are running Microsoft Azure. Personally with that alone I'm surprised it has been going so long without a breach but in reality someone probably got greedy and took the money after cleaning out everything else and that was the only way that they picked up that something was wrong. Took a couple of calls to ASIO and another place I would prefer not to mention for them to get started and point out to the Federal Police Officer he could be coming to me for help not trying to blame me for the mess that had happened and I was really a nice guy and the company I run helps them no end and is one of their preferred Expert Helpers. Then when I get back to the office I have people from the Fair Work Commission claiming I'm not paying the staff correctly apparently the recent pay rise of 5.2% which doesn't cover a single worker in the business was not being paid instead I had increased their wages in a rise by 12.5% so I was paying them incorrectly not to mention that for the previous 6 months I had bumped up their Super Contributions to 12% not 10.5% so I was in some insane way robbing my workers by overpaying them all. Now that is something I really did not know how to handle a complaint I'm overpaying staff who do a great job and I want to not only keep but reward as well. Even the woman who was running the complaint was serious that I was not paying the staff properly but apparently as the paperwork went through the system it was flagged and had to be set right. Wouldn't have been an issue if they where being underpaid but overpaying them for great work is something I just do not understand being a complaint. So I spent all day jumping through hoops put there by the previous fools and then trying to explain that No I do not have to pay my staff a 5.2% increase and 12% is actually more than double the wage rise that was awarded to workers on the Basic Wage. Takes me back tot he days when The Heritage Listed House needed some 1/8 glass replaced which I went down to the the local glass works with a template got it cut and I fitted the glass into the steel frames. The problem there is they invoiced it as 3mm Clear Glass and the girl from the Heritage Commission was insisting it was the wrong glass because it was not 1/8 inch clear glass. Didn't matter how much I showed her that 3mm is 1/8 it was wrong had to be removed and replaced with 1/8 glass. When I got higher up the food chain it was fixed without needing to replace the glass but it was suggested to me to prevent this happening again by the underlings to get any new glass I fitter invoiced in Imperial Measurements not metric. That way I would have an easier life.

Question to girl from Fair Work is 12% more than 5%? Answer Well Yes. So what is the problem? You are not paying your staff correctly you. So I'm over paying them? No you are not paying the staff correctly? When was this Negotiated Increase Submitted? Christmas 2021 so why are you here now? The recent Basic Wage increase was 5.2% you should be paying an increase of 5.2% not above 12. I then asked how could I know 6 months ahead of time what the Fair Work Commission was going to do and how did it apply to my staff all of which are way above an award that doesn't exist? It was easier dealing with the Federal Police at least they have some brains even if you never want to upset them under any circumstances you can at least talk to them reasonably and get reasonable answers.

I had heard the phrase that "nurses eat their young" but discovered it to be true. I can't believe that there would have been too much improvement in the last 11 years since I had to retire but nursing would have been more rewarding without the other nurses and just the patients! Apart from a very special 2 or 3 which I hope are doing well the others can go and jump in the lake for all I care. It's like all the school yard bullies decided to take up the 'caring profession"! Good riddance to bad rubbish

In addition, I was the only minority in a huge office - were I worked for thirty years. We did not have one thing in common with each other - we did not socialize with each other on the job, and we did not socialize with each other on weekends (we did not work weekends) or on holidays (we got holidays off - with pay). Only four things I actually liked about my federal civil service job - the pay, job advancement opportunities, I got sick leave and annual (vacation) leave, and I got to wear jeans too work every day. I do not miss my workmates - but I DEFINITELY miss not getting paid every two weeks (on a Tuesday) :-))! I now get paid - on a monthly basis (bummer).
