Unusual plants in your garden
Helen V 39252328-Jul-22
When we first moved to our present home, we discovered a weird-looking plant called homalocladium platycladium. It is also known as a tapeworm plant or centipede plant, which describes it well. It has flat segmented branches instead of the usual rounded ones.
Do you have any unusual plants?

      • Most people know a walking tree when they see it but don't know it walks. It is called a Banana tree. Each year it fruits and dies down but it sends up another shoot for the next year right next to the old shoot. (1 step per year.)

It is so out of place in our garden, but the pleasure the birds bring us for that brief time each year stops us from moving or removing it. It is the weirdest thing...

                                            • Mostly we grow weeds and clover is going nuts right now, we have fire weed which is a pretty yellow flowered weed. Looks a little like a daisy. The cranium hybrids are a little frost bitten at the moment but should come good in spring and we have lovely orange gladioli. I would like to get a different coloured ones. We also have roses which I love would like some more of those. Just planted a rhubarb which is slowly taking hold and can't wait to be able to harvest some yummy.

                                                • We didn't even have grass in our front or back yards when we first moved in our newly built house. It was also a newly created suburb which they cleared bushland to make in the early 90's. Our mother handed a pack of grass seeds to my sister and myself to scatter around our house, when we got back from school. It took months before the grass grew and covered our yards. So just seeing Grass Lawn for the first time around our house felt like a Miracle ;-)

Going to pot them and sell off as they are expensaive to buy. Somewhere along the line a tenant has planted and it is quite big now. It is a long spiny leaf with a flower stalk that goes up 15 to 20 feet into the air with a small bunch of dark pink flowers. Nice when they are small.

My boyfriend is growing melon and we have a blueberry plant and all kinds of fruits and veggies. I plan on growing more flowers, fruits and veggies soon.

It was lovely. Now I live in a townhouse with a small back and front yard but I have again planted flora that brings insects and I have a bird bath and love watching the birds throughout the day taking a drink or a bath. My garden would be unusual for other areas or countries I guess though but for here it is quite the norm.
