Job requirements
ILikECatS07-Aug-24
I have been searching for a job, for about 6 months now, with the same result every time I've applied. One of the main requirements when applying for a job is having a driver's license. I haven't been able to get my driver's license for a number of personal reasons, but this has restricted me to jobs that I'm not interested in. What should I do about this?

  • I have been searching for jobs since 2022 and still have not found a job yet. Been on a series of interviews that went very well just be told that they company hired within which is so frustrating.
    ·
    • Try getting your driver's licence Go to a different location to do the test
      ·
      • find someone impersonal who can get you up to passing a licence. If you are interested in a job, yet a driver's licence is essential..... join the dots...
        ·
        • Nearly all but a few jobs that are located in big buildings or in retail outlets do not have a need for a drivers licence be it an office job or one in retail or food.
          ·
          • Find a job where you can work from home or use public transport or walk to
            ·
            • Most jobs want you to have reliable transport every day, and in many cities that means a car
              ·
              • I have a son who won't drive. He rides his bicycle about 3kms each way to and from work at a Subway sandwich restaurant. All of the other jobs required experience but his boss hired him without any. He is fantastic with computers but having no driver's license really limits him. He is now searching for another job and since I'm retired, I offered to drive him if he gives me something, but less than a taxi would cost him. If the job you want requires that you may be having to drive a client to the store or doctor appointment, or to get yourself to different job sites (plumber, construction worker, etc.) you may have to just settle for a different type of job that you can take a cab or a bus to and from. It sucks for you but unless you can find a way to get your driver's license, you are limited. I'm really sorry. But I understand as I have a son who for his own reasons will not drive a car.

                • A lot of people gave had jobs they’re not interested in, but there’s an old saying that one has to be in work to get work, use the disinteresting job as a networking stepping stone to the job you are interested in
                  ·
                  • At the end of the a it’s just a skill. So show your prospective employer you have other skills just as valuable if not more so than driving.
                    ·
                    • Don't be so fussy. Take any job while looking around for something you like
                      ·
                      • Asking what the requirement of a driver's license is for. Is it for on the job duty? is it for last minute job calls? if it's only to do with getting to the job, then it shouldn't be a reason to deny you a spot
                        ·
                        • That is so right! It may just be a matter of showing responsibility and maturity that they're asking this question.
                          ·
                      • My opinion, I would say buckle down and study hard for the license test.
                        ·
                        • Same thing has happened to my son, always asked about drivers license.I suspect it's so the business knows they can rely on you to get to work and on time.A lot of people take public transport now rather than drive to work but they don't seem to take that in to consideration.

                          • So true. I never thought of that but if they call you to come fill in for someone who didn't show or something needs to be done by you right now, they need to know you don't rely on public transportation to get there in a hurry. Time is money...

I think that it is available in most areas. Not rural areas.

                        • It totally sucks not to have your Ps after so long. Most jobs I’ve seen and applied to don’t require a driver’s license. So, try getting a job that doesn’t require it. Other forms of ID may be acceptable depending on the job specifications.

Volunteer locally, and you might find a job through networking. Or start you own business...we had a unique engraving business that specialised in linedance and other badges that no one else did..very successful..you never know until you try

                                • Job applications will say driver's license because that's a main source of ID but it usually includes a state ID or a passport is usually acceptable. It doesn't hurt to ask. The only reason a driver's license would be have to be required is if driving is required for the job.

                                    • I am confused why are you looking for a job that requires a drivers licence if you don’t have one. You might need to look for jobs that don’t require you to drive.

                                      • Get a photo ID card (if you don't have one). Try and get a job working from home.

I don't have a driver's licence either (for reasons I chose not to) and have caught mostly 2 buses just to get to and from work, in a particlar instance 3 buses/

                                                • If you need a job, then unfortunately, you sometimes need to take on jobs you are not interested in. You might be surprised and actually enjoy the job. Give it a go.

                                                              • My Mum had to get a new form of ID as the bank wouldn't use her expired drivers license. Dad had to pay $175 for a photo ID card in which he thought was a rip off. It is proof of ID and can be used in stead of a driver's license. The post offices take photo ID photos so I would go on a less busy time and ask for a little bit of assistance and I am sure they would be very willing to help. ( at a cost though the cards aren't free.). Good Luck

                                                                  ·

It also depends on your experience. I know that working in retail, handling money and difficult customers, I was offered a few jobs. Who knew cashiers were being poached/head-hunted?? I didn't until it happened to me. Never give up on yourself and what you have to offer.

                                                                  ·

                                                                    ·

With the skills I had picked up on, I informed the agency I was getting work through, that as long as I had a pay packet at the end of the week, that I would go to any job they sent me to. AND I had some doozy places to work at but to me, it was work which at the end of the week I got paid. Through temping, I made a lot of new friends & had some lovely places to work at & got treated as if I was a regular worker for that company.

                                                                            ·

                                                                            ·

Churches often help people pay for things like this. You can also see if your local unemployment agency can provide payment for this as well. In the meantime, keep looking!, The right place will come along! Good luck.

                                                                                    ·

A lot of jobs just put it down as a requirement as they believe it will make you more reliable as an employee. Just don’t tell them you don’t have one if it is not part of the job role.
                                                                                      ·

My son applied for his job and they asked do you have reliable transport? He said yes my feet. So he walked to work religiously for six months half an hour each way. Three years later he still has that job but now a car.

If the job requires driving then you would not be qualified but if not just explain you do not have a car not the personal why you do not have a license. Too much information in an interview is never a good idea try turning the tables and asking why you would need to drive what am I going to have to perform because I am not comfortable driving someone else's vehicle.

You say that you can't get a job you're interested in because they require you to be able to drive, which you choose not to do. Knowing this, you might want to start looking for work that can get a foot in the door. Let's say you dream of being a vet that travels to the patient/sick animal. Not having a licence puts a stop to being able to do this job, but you can still work in the industry by working in a pet store, a factory where they make pet food, you could volunteer your services to an animal shelter, you could design art or clothing with your favourite animals as your main theme, you could join freelancing sites like fiverr or airtasker and take on casual or regular work helping people. Not having your licence does not mean you are unemployable, you simply have to open your eyes a bit wider and see things on a bigger scale, look outside the square. If you have access to a bicycle or public transport- use these as your main form of getting to a place of employment. Be open to getting ANY job for now- get your foot in the door. Many businesses have started to put on their "Christmas Casuals" which gives regular shifts from now until January. This job could very well be enjoyable for you and you may be kept on after the holiday period and this may be a chance for you to work your way higher up the company. Write down a list of all your qualities, what you are good at and then determine where those skill sets and qualities could be most beneficial- this will help you decide what types of jobs to look for now. They don't have to be career jobs, test the waters with a few jobs that you maybe hadn't thought of. The job i ended up enjoying and loving the most, plus i was really good at it, was the job i told myself from my childhood that i never wanted to do. Just be willing to try something new or something you thought you may not have seen yourself doing.
