Perceptions of the Elderly. Ageism - alive and well?
Elizabeth H 16587920-Sep-24
I was reading an article today. A travel journalist commented on an elderly couple walking arm in arm along the streets of a country town. He described this as an example of "enduring love" or "mobility support".
Why are some people sceptical about affection between elderly people? I like to think that in an ideal world, there should be no age barrier to people showing affection to one another.
What are your thoughts on this issue?

  • The young will eventually get old and will know themselves that if they live as long since modern technology is causing an increase in cancer and other ailments.

    • Young people need to see more of elderly people showing affection to one another, to adult children, and to the grandkids. It is learned behaviour. We say good- bye to one another at the door showing affection. The grandkids just stared at my husband and I the first time they saw us hugging and planting a kiss on each other. There is no age barrier for showing affection and caring.

      • I see many couples that are no longer teens holding hands etc. I remember watching a report of a husband whose wife had dementia and he went and learnt how to do her nails, hair, makeup and anything else she needed and he showed so much love and care. He said she had looked after him for 50 years and now it was his turn to care for her. It was really beautiful. Care for another person should have no boundaries.
