Telephone surveys
Holly Cat25-Apr-23
I remember 20 plus years ago when landlines were still common, getting phone calls in the evening to complete a survey. It would go on sometimes for a good half hour and they were not paid surveys. So if I get frustrated from screening out, I think of the phone surveys I did for free and at least the online surveys pay something lol. Does anyone still get contacted to do an unpaid telephone survey, or are they a thing of the past?

  • Most survey calls other than my panels are at voting time. I think those are a thing of the past.

    • I have had the odd one around voting time. I did do one some months ago that was a paid one. I answered the survey and thought at the end I probably won't get paid but I did get a $30 gift card so it wasn't a scam.

      • Yes Holly and they always rang at teatime..! I don't get phone surveys anymore but i do get heaps of email ones telling me they will enter me into a monthly draw that you never find out who wins...

        • Marketing calls on my mobile phone to sell solar panels even though I request each and every time to remove me from their direct marketing list. It’s happening once a month.

          • Telephone surveys are still a thing, but they are few and far between. Looking at the pay for online surveys vs getting nothing to complete telephone surveys is a good motivation to complete the online surveys.

            • No. & if they did ask I wouldn't do it anyway.
              ·
              • Not in a long time

                • Years ago, I did get invited to a focus group as a result of doing a telephone survey. It was interesting. There were about 10 of us in a round table discussion. It lasted an hour and I got paid $50. Now I was worried it was a scam, so my boyfriend, who is now my husband, drove with me and waited in the parking lot for me until I finished lol.

                  • Good boyfriend and husband!

                • Not for quite a while - BUT I will only answer numbers when I know who is calling......... Gets rid of anything unwanted.

                  • Yes occasionally, but I cut them off because it is usually when I am having my tea.
                    ·
                    • Yes once in awhile
                      ·
                      • every now and again I get a call but I keep talking and they'll do anything to get off the call

                        • Occasionally phone survey usually on politics! I hang up!
                          ·
                          • go unlisted and don't answer from private or unknown ones, never get stuck wasting your time with unsolicited strangers...
                            ·
                            • Phone calls are usually for money, not surveys and the ones who phone for surveys are usually biased.
                              ·
                              • No they are very few and far done now.. most I do are on line.

                                • No I don't have a landline. I really don't know anyone who has, with the exception of my ex mother in law. But many ,many years ago I used to do quantities social research, mainly on site, like at airports, big city's,huge shopping centres. Not the best job I ever had. Mainly gov polling, for policy,or feedback for large department stores. Payed really well, from the time I left home till I got home as well as petrol/logbook. Gotta be really motivated, people person and very thick skinned as not everybody is happy to participate. So if I was approached by a surveyed, I did it cause I remember how tough it was.

                                  • No, every now and then I get a phone survey, usually it's political. I remember the survey's you used to be asked to do in shopping centres where you got to test different products.

You can go into the settings menu Imperia and when u find your family's numbers there's a menu option to always let this caller through. Then your phone will just ring normally and they won't get the guardian msg. I even unblock the guardian when I'm expecting a telehealth call or similar, then just re set it when done. I've had so much peace and quiet with no annoying spammers !

In those days not everyone had telephones - people still managed to live full lives without them !!

Same as if you asked 100 people in the street what is their favorite colour of car. 60 say white so they say 60% of respondents said white but they never say how many were asked.
                                                                                    ·

It’s actually true! 😂😂 It’s funny that “companies” actually want you to take your time to give them free help. It’s actually not just banks. Hmmmm I know great non-profit places that need volunteers!

I think it was a $20 Coles voucher and I guess it took about half an hours or so. The lady was really nice so of course that made it easier. I don't mind either way as long as I get paid some thing for my time so no it is not for free that is for sure.

Now we don't own land lines the tech to temp us to part with our $ even more invasive. BUT We get hooked to these costly devices. SAD Really. The phone used to be for just making human contact. They want to know how they have done at satisfying me and resolving the issue. Sometimes I do them; sometimes not! I hate making phone calls to companies because it is totally frustrating. After an hour, I end up back where I started! I have literally become suicidal over issues that they refused to fix! I lost about $200 from DirecTV because they charged me months ago, and I don't even have an account with them. They told me it was too long ago. My bank couldn't do anything either. So, I told them to NEVER use my debit card again and to delete it entirely! A couple months later, they have charged my account again! I had to file a complaint against them! This is just more than I can handle because I have depression and anxiety and live alone with no one to help me with these things! I see why people are going crazy and shooting people! These telemarketers drive me nuts. I get several calls/day from them. I had about three calls from them today about Medicare. They will NOT stop no matter what I do. If I'm not wearing my glasses, I can't see the caller ID which doesn't matter anymore. They are using caller IDs from my contact list or other businesses or just a name. This needs to be stopped! I literally can't handle it! I try not answering the phone, and they leave messages. Sometime the voicemails say nothing!

I think I always declined. I got rid of my landline, but do get occasional calls from insurance and power 'compare the provider prices' companies. I find they prattle on too fast for me. They tend to speak in one very long word. I did get a call once for a free inhouse cookware demonstration and If I accepted I would receive a free steak knife set valued at $49. I accepted. I got entertained for about an hour being dazzled by gorgeous shiny pots and pans. But I declined the cook set purchase of around $1200. The demonstrators commission for 1 hour work $0. My commission 1 hour of being entertained and a free steak knife set valued at $49 (yeah right).

I remember getting door knocked as well. They always said 5-10 minutes and it usually went for 45. Never did it again via phone or door. I always told them "I have heard that before and it has gone for 45 minutes AND I told you that I could only spare 5-10". What is annoying these days is completing the survey and not getting paid OR spending so long on those horrible prescreening and "prove you are not a robot" questions and getting no compensation for having your time wasted on those for 5-10 miutes. These days, they call your mobile and they are so rude as to call you repeatedly at any time of day or night and not leave a message OR it is a robot that has called you (which is even ruder). I really hate that sites give out your details without your permission. The site itself I am ok being contacted by but not partners (even if I have done a survey for them as these "follow up" surveys are worse and you usually don't get compensated and the original survey probably didn't pay enough any way).

The time it took depended [as now with online surveys] on the answers you gave/give. Don't think I ever did any lasting more than 20 minutes. Mostly between 5 and 10 minutes. As some companies paid by completed survey rather than an hourly rate I can understand the insistence but still not right

So many of these did not pay in the end due to their poor quality of data capture etc and even with proof, the panel either said they would pay (but never did) or make an excuse about it so I have never done these again. You can forgive one or two for not working properly, but when they all start doing it, it is a scam. You know it is a scam when everyone else who was doing the same diary complained to the panel and the panel just made up an excuse of 'technical issues and we can't do anything about it". These days, I just say NO to these as I have been burned too often.
