Discussion of the Day
Lotto winners that continue working
23-Sep-20
I love my work. So I can understand people wanting to continue their passions after winning millions. But people who continue on in dead-end jobs (that they hate) a week after winning the jackpot should have their winnings taken off them.

  • GIVE SOME MONEY TO CHARITY AND FAMILY HAVE A GOOD BREAK AND THEN GO BACK TO WORK OR WORK FOR YOURSELF HAVE TO KEEP THE MIND AND BODY WORKING!!!!
    ·
    • If people win the Lotto and wish to carry on working, it's their perogative, as there is no law that says you are not allowed to work. I know if I won the Lotto and was working at the time I would still do so. I would share my winnings with family and do a couple of donations that I support.

      • If I won big there’s no way I would work
        ·
        • Depends on age and your enjoyment of your job when you really boil it all down. It also helps to stay anonymous
          ·
          • If you love what you are doing as far as work is concerned then why not keep enjoying it
            ·
            • It would also depend on age.
              ·
              • I'm unable to work so i would help out my family and friends if the win was big enough.
                ·
                • good idea to work since have to do something with your time?
                  ·
                  • I would continue to work

                      • I see no objection to anyone wanting to continue working after lotto wins, With or Without money retirement can be very boring, both my husband and I have been forced into retirement,, Age Pension is hard to live on, every dollar counts, Nest Eggs a, re gifts from Heaven, Ours was taken away from us Via HIH, so good on anyone who wins and keep working
                        ·
                        • I’d continue to work if I won big too
                          ·
                          • lf l won big l would still work just for the company until l got bored
                            ·
                            • Their money. They can do what they want
                              ·
                              • It's up to them

                                • If you still want to work you can always do volunteer work.
                                  ·
                                  • Rubbish! You need a bit of time to get your wits together and the best way to do that is to stay a normal as you can. Give yourself space to realise the enormity of it
                                    ·
                                  • They should be so lucky! I did win on the Lotto some years ago, but since it was for the princely sum of $12 decided to carry on working :-)
                                    ·
                                    • Sadly that means winner is so narrow minded. He or she has no other interesting activities to do in their lives.
                                      ·
                                      • If I won a significant amount of money, I would quit my job, go on a well deserved holiday, give some to the grandkids, invest the rest and live quite happily (and comfortably) off the earnings .......
                                        ·
                                        • If they are happy with what they are doing, good luck to them...
                                          ·
                                          • I only win on scratchies thats all.
                                            ·
                                            • Depends, how much you win, how much family, friends you want to help out and how much you want to give to charity. If it is only a small amount, you might have debts and by the time you buy a house, they are so expensive theses days, you might have to keep working.
                                              ·
                                              • id give 4 weeks notice to not raise any suspicions, say i took a job working remote for an overseas company and leave. as much as id want to quit on the spot, rather not draw attention to it
                                                ·
                                                • I am retired so don't have to think about work. Depending on how big a win it was - say $20 million - I would set up a Philantrophic Agency, bank-roll it with $15 million, re-invest 1/3 of income, distribute 1/3 to people who actually need it - not just those crying poor and keep 1/3 as Readily available cash.. The remianing $5 million I would invest and live on the income from that.

                                                  • seeing I am retired I cant resign on the spot BUT if I was working I would cut ALL available sick leave out then slowly disappear into the sunset
                                                    ·
                                                    • i would give up as long it was enough to last
                                                      ·
                                                      • Had a relative that won $788,000 on Keno, he saw a financial advisor the next day, put the money in the bank for 3 months to contemplate what he would do, gave his notice at workplace... still in the same house, still has the same car, only works as a consultant for roughly 3 months of the year. Shouted his mum and immediate family a cruise... he has the money working for him and splurges with little luxuries and is semi retired. Lucky person, also couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
                                                        ·
                                                        • Well I would follow my passion and that is own a Cattery so yes I would still be working.

                                                          • i'been around for a while and have known a few that 'retired' when they cracked a significant spit, Some sought advice, some even took it initially, The majority of them are now not much better off than when they were working, Some have not only spent the their win but have ended up bankrupt. 'Takes a tad of nous and guts to keep it together and ensure that the changes to your familial circumstances change for the better AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, stay that way
                                                            ·
                                                            • I would continue working just for the social interaction. Life gets pretty boring when you dont see the people and friends from work

                                                                • Who are you to judge what jobs or lives other people have. It's their life and they should be able to live it as they want to.
                                                                  ·

I do not believe that any winner would have the cash in their hot little hand in a week so continuing to work till you get the money is completely understandable. I'm sure that the ATO will be the first to get their hands on any of this and they are not known for being quick at processing forms.
                                                                    ·

                                                                      ·

                                                                        ·

                                                                          ·

                                                                            ·

                                                                                ·
                                                                                • it depends on your job if you love your work why not continue working
                                                                                  ·
                                                                                  • It probably depends on what type of work you do. Some people work at unpleasant jobs.
                                                                                    ·
                                                                                    • I have two lots of friends that have one lotto, $3 million and $1.9 million, both continued to work until they worked out what they were going to do with the money. Both had financial assistance from Lotto, invested the money and had a healthy monthly payment, they live very well. Other friends won $1.7 million and gave up work and within in nine months didn't have a penny to their name. I believe its how you handle the win and that could mean you give up work or you continue to work.
                                                                                      ·
                                                                                      • I never see evenone in front of me win lotto. My mother play lotto 25 years or more and never win lotto. My sister and father play lotto years have not win lotto. I had a workmates put $1,000 in lotto in one day she did get no wins. Low all $1,000 not eve got $1. That why I don't play lotto maybe 1 years for the fun of its. The money you used in lotto is better put in a saved account in the end you have more money.
                                                                                        ·
                                                                                        • if they want too why not.
                                                                                          ·
                                                                                          • Why not
                                                                                            ·
                                                                                            • Like that would happen, a stupid statement just to get people cranky
                                                                                              ·
                                                                                              • I am all for freedom of choice ... some people do love what they do, and some may not know what they would be like without going to a workplace ... leave them alone to work it out for themselves I say!
                                                                                                ·
                                                                                                • People have the right to live however they want. Maybe they continue in their "dead-end" jobs because they like the people they work with, maybe they like the routine or maybe they don't want everyone knowing about their win and asking them for money
                                                                                                  ·
                                                                                                  • It really depends on what people can do. There is guidance available if winners want it. the Lotto board do try to address these issues. It does come back to personal choice.
                                                                                                    ·
                                                                                                    • before i retired i would play lotto with the person i worked with and we spoke about it we would work for for about 12 months then leave what happened i was retiring and using up my leave i had and my mate got a better job offer and left we got calls for the others workers for months we did not win
                                                                                                      ·
                                                                                                      • It's their choice....did it occur to you that they continue with their normal routine so no one knows they've won? Personally the song "I'm leaving on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be back again..." will be my answer phone message if I won.
                                                                                                        ·
                                                                                                        • I think it depends on how much you have won, your position in life, and if it’s a job that your really passionate about, and at the end of the day the money will run out.
                                                                                                          ·

This is not what life is all about. Take the money and share it with your family. You don't need the money you get from working so let someone have your job that is unemployed
