Discussion of the Day
We need lots of people to work in hospitality...please apply!
APB30-May-22
France currently estimates that it needs at least 125,000 people to work in caf s and restaurants...they can't get staff anywhere (it's the same here)...it is because....the wages are really terrible.....your job security is about the worst of any industry... there is a higher risk of catching Covid...due to working with the public closely......what are the French thinking of doing?..... introducing free training for new employees....and encourage people over the age of 55 to apply for positions......FANTASTIC.....how about just paying the people who are already qualified a decent living wage and show them some respect?....there is something seriously wrong with western society these days....what is wrong with people?...any ideas?... I see the same stuff going on in Australia...

  • Hospitality along with retail can be awful. Hospitality in particular is notorious for wage theft and underpayment of staff ( In Australia as well as elsewhere, not even going to get into the bullshit that is the US system). Long hours, dealing with fussy, entitled customers who think the world should revolve around them and then add some shady (not all of course) employers into the mix and it is not exactly an attractive prospect. To top it off you have revolving customers who somehow think that hospitality staff are somehow beneath them. It pisses me off how some morons seem to class it as unskilled work. It is definitely not. It may not be rocket science but keeping track of orders, balancing customer flow, managing drunk or generally obnoxious people (without smashing them in the face as they actually deserve), keeping track of orders etc takes some managing. Good staff are what keep a business ticking over. There are of course plenty of normal employers who pay at least award wages and back up their staff as they should. A fair days pay for a fair wage, sounds good to me. People should not have to juggle 2 or 3 jobs just to survive.

    • And deal with the vulgar public... No thanks

      • everyone shold get a adult wage and enough money to live but unfortuanately with that and not many hours theirs people who vant work in these jobs unless they are either young or on a pension

        • Are you happy with the price you pay for a coffee or would you prefer to $10 a cup? Come on, get real. There is little brain power required for waiting tables, it isn't brain surgery. Not all jobs deserve to get the same pay. Having said that I think the huge pay checks CEO's get is ridiculous and way over the top. They don't usually do that much and have minions running around doing it all. However, there is nothing stopping a waiter or waitress from aiming at being a CEO, and if you think the pay in Australia is poor, give a thought to the Americans who work pretty much for tips. That isn't the case here as we also have penalty rates..

So true. My husband joined the navy at 16 earning $10 a week. Once married he didn't earn much more so I darned his socks and cut the collars off his shirts turning them around when they frayed. We wanted our own home so after working 8 hours he worked behind a bar and on Saturday and Sunday he pumped petrol. We didn't ever say we don't earn enough or houses are too expensive. Back then there were no handouts, and far less whingers.

        • years ago, back when business owners had to pay 'union' wages, and the majority of jobs were 'full' time permanent positions, profits were 'improved' by convincing people that we had to accept erosion of employment conditions so that we could compete with third world workers. And then most Australian manufacturers send their production arms to third world countries, Then the banks, communication outfits and an yone else who could sent their call centers off shore too, Resulting in an Australia whose 'workforce' that doesn't have the discretionary income to ensure that Australian companies can maintain expansion and profitability or to pay fair wages.
          ·
          • Many Australians don't seem to realize our manufacturing jobs were sent offshore by Geoff Whitlam who signed a trade agreement stating that we would not compete with the countries we were trading with.

        • Its even worse in the Health Care industry for Caregivers. Its such hard work and they get paid utter rubbish for looking after our Elderly, disabled, brain injured etc..you'd think that would be a respected role- it should be on parr with Prison Wardens or Police- because what they deal with can be like that. Well from what i have seen personally.

        • Luckily I don't live in France, and not sure if I can do a good enough job they require me to do so sorry no application for me I did age care for 4 years and that was hard enough especially when you looked after a person for so long and you knock at the door one day and be told they passed away

            • Hospitality appears to be for the young. I have a daughter aged in her early fifties. She can't find anything - it still seems that employers continue to think that only the young need jobs and that they can offer the lowest pay possible. When do we get to the reality that all ages need reasonable finance to live!
              ·
              • My husband is in aged care and when I see what the carers there have to do - and nurses are needed 24 hours - why are they not getting paid what they are worth. Also have grandsons working in cafes as baristas who get paid better than those in aged care. It's not right people should be paid according to the work they do

                          • I concur about paying the qualified people a decent living wage and respecting them. But, what is happening to our Western countries is the infiltration of our Western institutions and local governments by Globalists/Communists who are implementing these socialist or marxist policies so they can collapse our economies so that we cannot stop them from resetting our countries (called the great reset) to their New World Order.

                                  • Oh God, the nightmare jobs they were in my life! Chefs throwing things at you and Hell would be opened if a customer didn't like the way the food was prepared! I still remember this elderly couple who always came in for the Sunday roast of the day. They were lovely people, always tipped, and would drive from their farm on Sunday's in order to treat themselves. One Sunday it was beef on the menu and they ordered it but the wife who co owned the country pub this bistro was in liked her beef "blue" which meant it was hardly cooked and had only stopped mooing. Because SHE liked her meat the same way a lion does she expected everybody else to eat it that way too! So I took the plates out to them KNOWING that it was just TOO raw for them and both of them looked at it the same way I would have if the roles were reversed, they asked if the Chef could cook it a little bit more. Well I took the plates into the kitchen with the explanation and if he could have he would have spurted flames from his mouth. He basically threw the meat onto a skillet, turned it over and then Her Ladyship said it should be done enough now! I was EMBARRASSED to take the plates out to them and I knew they understood that their request wasn't met with favour! They never came back again. I was ashamed by the Chef and Her Ladyship's behaviour but they WEREN'T! I got fired after that, the first time that had ever happened to me in my life, but those people were HORRIBLE. Another place, same story, although this incident happened at a place which many people would be familiar with and that's the Hydro Majestic Hotel in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. In the 1990's it was owned by a very wealthy family and they sometimes stayed over onsite and would eat in the dining room and keep an eye on things. But it wasn't the waitresses who were a problem but their sons, one of whom was working as Chef in their kitchen. Although he'd had a very expensive education he spoke like the gutter rat he actually was. I needed to put some plates down in the kitchen and although I can't recall why, I think I needed him to change what was on the plate if my memory serves me right. His response was "Choose an orifice". I think it took a couple of seconds for me to understand that he ACTUALLY said that! But they moved on and so did I. I don't blame people for not wanting to work in hospitality because it wasn't the customers then who were the problem back then, but it is now! I can't believe the rudeness I see on Tik Tok with Kyle's and Karen's who are just foul mouthed entitled schmucks! Thanks for reading.

                                      • Today all any employer - and most of them seem to be these huge "chains" with stores allegedly operating "independently" when, in fact they are very tightly controlled by Head Office - seem to want is to have their staff work as long hours as possible and, if, as so many have, get away with paying them the lowest possible wages. As "Sandeep r" says: Look after your Staff and they will look after your customers which will result in you also being looked after. Ok, so the French are encouraging those over 55 to get into the "Hospitality Sector" and that is great because we older people are overlooked when it comes to employment in all probability because unlike Teenagers & Early 20s we would not stand for the Slave Wage these cafes, restaurants, bistros are prepared to pay. Most mature people would have some idea as to what the minimum wage is, what the Awards provide for in the way of Overtime, Public Holiday Pay and would know where to go to find out if unsure. Pay your Staff Decent wages - & let's not have any of these nonsense claims that you can't afford to do so. Pay them properly and they will return you with more customers, more sales, more profits and, above all, Loyalty such that they will work that extra hour without being asked or asking to be paid for it.

                                        • But it is not in the interests of people who run these places to have well paid and secure workers they want to be able to dump them at the drop of a pin and pay someone else even less. Works quite well when you have lots of Uni Students and the like fighting for work but when they are not here you only have one option to complain bitterly about the lazy people who refuse to work for less than slave wages.

People want the highest of wages for little work and then on the other hand you get the really hard working people and there is no respect or are not given a fair go. It's so UnAustralian. Not many people can and do handle the general public and they are certainly ones I would not want to be around or really have any thing to do with. They employers need to make the work more safe, regular and be trustworthy. I wish them luck as I think they are going to need it.

I got screamed at for stuff that wasn't my fault, abused, not paid the legal minimum wage and now I am going through a lengthy process with the ATO because they never paid me a cent in my super. I told them they were paying most staff cash in hand $18 an hour and I was only getting paid $20 an hour as a casual. The bare minimum for full/part time staff was $22. I don't think they cared about that too much but they are chasing up the super.

I was an experienced RN and today my full-time wage would be around $120K, but as I am disabled and can no longer work I am on a DSP which I COULDN'T live on if it wasn't for the insurance money I receive monthly from one of my Super accounts from when I was working. I hadn't any idea I was even entitled to it but it was this lovely man named Frank who told me that I could have been taking this money home for what was then 9 years. I just wanted to know how I would go about accessing my Super as 65 was still many years away and still is I might add! But as I am trying really hard to prepare, and in all honesty I have been for about 4 years now, I do this! But I know that one day my MyGov app with the digital wallet and the Covid International Vaccination Certificate WILL cut me off from buying and selling and I'll either end up in a concentration, oh I meant QUARANTINE, camp or I'll be dead by my own hand or another and sooner rather than later! But while I HAVE the ability to prepare and grow my own food and can as much as I can also I will. My kids, adults all, think I'm doing it for me but I hardly eat their food, it's for THEM to use and bless others with. I will leave you with a comment from a soldier who served Australia within the last 10 years and ended up with PTSD because of it" If the Australian people knew what their government has in store for them there would be rioting in the streets ". Wonder why there's so many surveys asking if anyone has military in their families?

Even if the wage isn't the best, give them kind gestures that show you appreciate them. They will be happy, work harder, and your profits will rise due to customer satisfaction! Everyone needs to realize this. Reward them for going the extra mile, and they will go even further. It doesn't have to be costly. Maybe even something simple like donuts for coffee break. Treating them as people who have a life outside of their job and understand there will be times when they need an extra break or time off. Let them make it up later if you need to but showing compassion and understanding in all jobs goes a long way. I had good pay, great benefits, but the boss never gave me credit for doing anything! All I ever heard was criticism that none of the male employees ever had to put up with. I literally was overworked and ended up with a nervous breakdown that they blamed on my father's passing! I was not allowed to take time off to even go see him when he was dying because we had work that HAD to be done. It was all on my back, and I got the blame for everything and had to constantly prove I was right in how I did things! I had no time for the boss's crap! I think I did my job too well, and it intimidated him! I've heard him say, "What do you expect from a woman!" I walked out, and his face was beat red! I wish I had brought THAT up in court, but my lawyer would not allow me to mention any union problems. Yes, we had brought AFSCME in, but it was fruitless. The boss from Harrisburg literally told him to quit blaming everything on me! I haven't worked a day since 1989!

Most have not reopened, They say they need alot of staff. But I have always wondered if we have too many of these anyway. Whilst we are trying to get back to something considered normal . I have found it is now too expensive for that daily coffee. Also in Sydney we always relied on overseas students & backpackers to fill in the cafe jobs. They are not paid alot anyway.

But I will say my current job the staff and management do treat me well which is more than I can say for most of my previous Kitchen jobs.

We need to be encouraging people to work in ESSENTIAL businesses instead ie. food production, health, environmental care etc.. There is a huge shortage of healthcare workers where I live. There is a shortage of tradies. There is a shortage of teachers. They are the careers/jobs that we should be putting the focus on and helping people to achieve. Hospitality certainly has its uses like encouraging travellers to visit areas and providing brief moments of entertainment/treats for residents. Overall though, essential jobs/careers must be given priority. Going to cafes is and always will be a luxury for the majority. Going to stay in a hotel is and always has been a luxury activity for most. Travelling workers obviously use them to help with their jobs, but they are in the minority. Hospitality is something that few of us need to survive. Priorities. Essential training first and foremost.

Hence, in this scenario (which will never "change") - people are consider disposable. Not to mention (but I will): Why would you put your life at risk for a job that pays an unlivable wage (with no benefits) - but comes with major health risk pertaining to the job! Heard that one recently, {somewhere, lolol}, and the second "stanza" applies here, I think, to the powers that be ... but to be kind, maybe a little of the first stanza too! Funny how people consider some work as menial, but if there is a shortage of people willing to do said menial work, we are just about where we are now ... careening down Crud Creek, in a leaky canoe. Waiting tables may or may not be considered menial, but it sure ain't easy work, especially these days!

The wages are low, you are usually treated very badly from chefs who seem to think they have the right to be downright beligerant, rude, and demeaning and then some customers are no better. Of course if you have no money, need extra over and above your current position it can be a great help. It is not an easy job either and for the elderly it would be a huge strain in many cases. I am not sure why you single out western society for this. Asian, Middle Eastern and other countries pay poorly with very long hours. We are not perfect but people have to stop bagging Western society for every little thing. I prefer to live in Australia than any other country as our standard of living is pretty good albeit we do have some issues with housing at present due to limited availability due to floods, fires, etc. but there are jobs for people but many do not want to work in these industries and maybe due to Covid which is on the rise once again with a number of deaths every day higher than we experienced any time during the pandemic. We also have the flu which is a doozy. Personally, I wear my mask in public and do not blame people for being wary.
