Is it better to ignore cravings or to eat in moderation?

Appetite and hunger can both be triggered by many things that include sight, smell, and changes in the digestive system. However, your appetite can be influenced by things like boredom or undefined thirst that may lead to creative thoughts. What do you reckon? Is it better to ignore cravings or to eat in moderation?

            • I eat the things I crave because otherwise I'll eat something better for me and not be satisfied; I end up eating what I craved anyway. So, eat what you want, but eat less of it. Tip... just chew a little longer, roll it around on your tongue a couple of extra seconds. That way you get more satisfaction than if you just gobble it down as fast as you can. Eating slower also makes you feel full quicker. And water. Drink water to help fill up the spaces:)

                                                    • It really depends on the person. Some people just can't give into your cravings as they eat so much its not funny. Others have no problems with eating in moderation.

                                                          • This seems to me to be a perfect situation for some Behaviour Modification or Classical Conditioning. Somehow you may have let your cravings, which are only thoughts (unless you have a medical condition) that can be rearranged to either change what you crave to eat or don't have any cravings for food at all. I think that if you ignore cravings they may just get more compulsive leading to a point where you can't use moderation. If this is really bothering you and you just can't seem to get a handle on it, it may be time for some professional help. If you live near a University maybe someone in the Psychology Department is working on an answer for cravings/addictions. If they can't help you maybe they can suggest someone. I hesitate to suggest that you try a Google search, or something similar, because there is no end to the cruelty out there and if you're looking for help some creep will find you for sure and make things even worse. Remember, be careful out there.

                                                            • I've lost 45 pounds over the past year, averaging 1 pound a week, and I eat whatever I want, up to 1200 calories a day, drinking lots of fluids, and doing intermitent fasting, eating dinner before 7pm, and breakfast after 11am. If I 'crave' something, I eat it, reducing calories somewhere else, and the beverages I drink, mostly hot (tea, coffee, lemonade) keep me satisfied the rest of the time! ;-D

                                                                • Depends how much you eat in moderation. Junk food can be very addictive. If I'm feeling that urge to eat junk I sometimes just eat a raw carrot instead. Has a sweet taste and I feel better for it. I used to eat packets of chips without even thinking twice. Have to adjust a little if you become less active with age. If weight gain starts it becomes harder to lose again.

                                                                  • It's not just what you eat,it's the time you eat. Late night binge eating isn't good no matter what you eat. Your body has no chance of burning up those calories while you sleep.

                                                                    • Barring food allergies,all things in moderation. Be aware of why your eating. ie emotional eaters. As long as you stay hydrated and eat regular meals you should stay healthy. Medication could affect appetite.

                                                                        • Sometimes your body tells you that you need something but I think you should avoid Snacking as much as possible. For example just try this: Buy a bag of Potato Chips, crispd or whatever you call them. Eat a few and what almost inevitably happens? You scoff the lot. More artery blockage, more of that unsightly fat around the tummy you have been trying so hard to lose.

                                                                            • That all depends on the situation pregnant women are known to go crazy over some foods that normally would never be placed together but they claim to love it though a few months latter when they are no longer pregnant that can not understand how they even thought what they where demanding was even a possibility. If is just something you see while at the shops it's better to ignore it though again that all depends on the willpower of the person in question so I suppose I have to say that all depends on the person and how they deal with their desires.

I love the smell of doughnuts freshly cooked. I do eat them from time to time as a treat. If I smell them I want them. Note to one's self don't go shopping when the doughnuts are cooking and I never know when that will be so I do get caught out occasionally. Oh well never mind and guess what we only live once so what ever you do just be happy and enjoy life.

                                                                                                • I eat everything in moderation because everytime you turn on the TV these days they're saying something will kill you if you consume too much then down the track another study says the opposite and that its healthy for you. Eat what you want when you want in moderation and don't pay attention to the studies, you'll have a happier life.

My favourite indulgence used to be a medium Hawaiian Pizza with extra anchovies every Friday for lunch. Then I looked it up on Google.That one pizza was more that 2350 calories which is over the full amount you should have for the whole day. Add breakfast and tea...Gee, I wonder why I was getting fat.🤣

                                                                                                          • I had a doctor tell me during my 2nd which was also my last pregnancy that ignoring cravings could actually be dangerous and that we shouldn't do it, if you're body is screaming for something it's probably lacking in something that it needs which for me turned out to be extremely iron deficient and my craving was going through a 3kg bag of party ice a day could not stop eating it lol.

If you crave good organic fruit or veg it means something. If you crave JUNK now called food it could be sign of trouble. As for me, we NEVER ate junk, we grew up before pizza, Maccas, chocolates.

I think if I have a really bad craving then it's best to have a small portion of that craving to get it out of my system. Otherwise, all I am doing is thinking about that craving and wanting it more and more.

                                                                                                                                    • Usually the things that are tempting you are high in sugars and or fats. I think you are answering your own question just by asking. It take a lot of discipline to stay away from these temptations but once it is a habit it becomes much easier. As side benefit you will not dread the bathroom scales. Good luck.

He ate lamingtons, fish and chips, Tip Top boyensberry trumpets, and/or trifle almost daily. And would get drunk on four beers. He ate what he wanted and passed at the ripe old age of 94. Respect!!!!! 🥰😃

You can indulge on occassions just don't make a regular habit of it.
