They Don't Write Music Like That Anymore!
APB28-Mar-24
I have a fairly large CD collection, maybe 200 to 250...just all the very best music I have ever heard in my life....most of it from the late 1960s to the 1990s haven't played most of it for over 15 years...(and I listen to some current music and think that is total rubbish and... who would listen to it?)...WELL I have just started to really listen to ALL my music again...being honest...nearly half of it is rubbish too!....let's be fair...a lot of the attraction of music ties it into what are you doing at the time history...who you were with...take it out of context...and your excited youth...and a lot of it does not stand up either...even on occasion a bit sad. What do you think?..try it...

  • We've been trying to decide who we can bless with our CDs! We are sworn classical listeners so it's not that they go out of date but when I listen to modern versions of the classics being played, I feel that they have all been on steroids. I just don't think faster is better!

    • OMG I have the biggest tape, CD and DVD collection and my Xbox and every other game system etc I have ever had 😅 not sure if it's that I love going back to them or I'm a hoarder and can't let go 🫣😅

      • yeah they do write music like that now, and 25 years from now someone else will say the same thing, it all comes down to if you get stuck in some musical era, and never give anything new a chance this is what happens,, today's music is great,, a lot of peoples minds for some reason get stuck like that,,, i check every week for new music,,,, the other thing is CDs sound sux, if y'all listened to that old music on vinyl, you will hear things in songs you never heard before,,,, i saved a lot of my vinyl,, tho i did rip a crapload of CDs, i have since been buying my old music that was on CDs, in vinyl,, the CDs do make great skeet to practice shooting doves,,, 😁

        • I remember my parents not liking my music in the 50's & 60's .Each generation has a different style we as "oldies" must be more tolerant

          • Good music should tell a story, a lot of the music these days is just the same 4-5 words repeated, boring. I grew up in the sixties and seventies, love rock, a great ballad and pop music.

            • I listen to my CD's every Friday while I clean bathrooms etc., and I have a LOT of CD's. I listen to The Beatles, Beachboys, Bread, Pilot, The Searchers, Boz Scaggs, Eric carmen, ELO, Peter Allen, Queen, Supertramp along with plenty of others. I also have some new CD's such as Sam Smith, Adele and Ed Sheeran and I can most definitely say there is a huge difference. My old music is all very different, it's upbeat and happy while Adele's songs have so much angst I find it difficult to listen to the entire CD. It all sounds the same no matter who is singing. Male or female it sounds the same. There is a high rate of suicide amongst young people today and while I bop along with my "old" music I often think that life was more simple and happy, we had so much to look forward to, despite the Vietnam War, we never had cause to consider killing ourselves. Music should be uplifting and if it isn't there's something wrong with it.

              • music is VERY powerful stuff, more important than most political speeches, It can sway emotions much faster, it can be, often is, subliminal. Try to not tap your finger or foot to a drum beat of a favorite tune when it's playing - or if it's only 'playing' in your head. People who know these things - know these things.... we need to be very careful these days, especially, what we listen to, and let our children listen - or be exposed - to.

                • As someone born in the early 80's and raised by depression era grandparents, who grew up in a housing commission dense suburb/area, my taste in music is extremely eclectic. I love old time music from centuries ago, sea shanties, throat singing, easy listening, pop, country, top 40, punk, emo, all types of rock and metal, today's music. There are some songs from any of those and other genres that i don't like, but equally, there are songs i love. There's even some songs i love for the lyrics but not so much the music it has been sung to. Hubby and i have thousands of CDs in our collection, and probably about 2500 DVDs/Movies in that separate collection too. Yes, we can fall out of love with certain bands, musicians, songs or movies, but then it is nice to revisit those from time to time as well and we can and do fall in love with music again. I would never expect anyone to like all the music i enjoy listening to, but it never hurts to have an open mind and listen to something that someone else enjoys. Ask them why they like it- it might help to strengthen your friendship or relationship.

                        • Just as we grow and change, our thoughts, attitudes, friends and lovers, so too does music change. I started liking music in the mid 1960's. The "British Invasion" was in full swing in Canada and I swung along with it. My pleasure grew with te addition of R&B, the Blues, Jazz and some single Country acts. Now, I find there are still a few oldies and newbies that get my blood boiling. Music, like beauty, is all in the eyes (ears) of the beholder (listener). It's not worth getting all upset about. There is stuff out there for every taste. Just be patient and maybe another Janis Joplin will appear.

                        • Music is just something that continually evolves. People get way too attached to certain genres or artists and disregard everything else. There is ALWAYS good music being made. I find the close mindedness quite a shame. Sometimes people look for reasons to dislike things instead of give them a chance and find any positives in the music. There is an element of ego and selfishness involved in it all imo. Obviously not every song etc has to be for everyone though. I wouldn't call things I no listen to bad. I just simply moved on and kept listening to other things as I grew as a person.

                            • I must admit that I still like listening to the 60-90's music. Some of the music of today is not worth listening to with words that you can't understand. At the moment I am listening to Cruise 1323 with music from the 60's/70's. Music that gets your feet tapping & longing to get up & dance. You can't beat it.

                              • Well firstly I hate CD's they don't sound right to me at least way to clean without any of the hiss's pops and crackles so I have kept all my Vinyl bought all that I can on Vinyl and not CD and only have a very small collection of CD's. I will admit that DVD's are good for video but you have to start with great masters and then edit the hell out of them to get a half way decent DVD or Blu Ray. As for the crap you hear over the internet it's not worth listening to it is so bad it makes 78's look brilliant but then again I have a decent Valve Amp a very good Preamp a direct drive Turntable and high end speakers so I can move things around by the noise coming out of the speakers alone just by playing with the ballance. The stuff the wife bought I can't stand but my records all the ACDC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and so forth still sound as good today as they did when new. The wife's easy listening Your the Voice and other rubbish like that I didn't like when new and still dislike it today so I can not really say it's got any worse to my ears, but what I like I can play as it was meant to be played so loud it makes your ears bleed and you are deaf for a week. I suppose it all depends on why you got a certain record if you only bought it because everyone else was raving about it then it doesn't age well but if oyu got it because you really liked it then it is timeless.

I have a few CD's and some older LP's he gave me back and some I've since purchased tracks or albums online and put them on to CD. I love 70-80's music best. I do also have some more modern stuff like Daft Punk, The Weeknd.

It really is just a commodity now - and with short attention spans, you get the music to suit - pleasant at the time but disposable. The big change is the singles and album charts - there isn't much cross over - mostly it is 'singles' artists (mostly airplay) and album artists. Gone are the middle of the road 'older' artists from the singles charts - would you get a Gordon Lightfoot, Glen Campbell, Captain and Tenille and the like hitting No. 1 anymore? Not saying that was a style of music I enjoyed that much, but it gave variety. Now it's just the latest fad which usually disappears shortly after reaching the upper reaches of the charts.

I still enjoy the thousands of songs I collected from the 1930s to maybe 2000 are still fantastic. I bought music tracks for the music not due to the circumstances etc. I think I only bought a couple of albums, as most only had one song that I was interested in. The music is still as great as the era that produced it.

Music we can sing along to, words we can remember and sing along with. How much of what passes for Music today is just Noise? Be honest, how many of today's songs can you actually remember the words, recognise the tunes? People go in their 10s, 100s of 1000s to so called Concerts put on by so-called Stars and what do they do? As soon as the Star appears they all start screaming and yelling so that whatever the Star is allegedly singing is drowned out. Religious or not I am willing to bet that almost everyone can remember the tunes and very often the words of every Christmas Carol ever written. Recently I decided to listen to what one of those people called Rappers was saying - they don't Sing. One so called song was almost pornographic with the Rapper telling some girl what he would like to do to her and what with. Another one, after which I gave up, the Rapper simply repeated the same words over and over and over again. That is Not Music it is just meaningless Noise.

I hate the songs (any era) that just take a snippet of a lyric and repeat that for the whole song or take the soundtrack and sing over it (unless it is really well done like when some classical music is mixed with a real song with real lyrics). I hate how women are oversexualised and are wearing less and less and are "expected" to be overly sexual in their dance moves and I also hate when one "formula" is successful, all of the sudden there are a million copycat artists or bands and they (in most part) all sound and look the same.

I heard a large array of music from various age groups. I am still going to say my Baby Boomer Generation has the best. We also had a wonderful music department right next door and on "open mike" afternoons many of this younger generation opted for their parents music which made my very happy that I could sing along....not so good for everyone else 😉🤣

Some old songs trigger memories of either happy times, or very painful times. I was born late 1964 but I love the folk songs of that decade and just yesterday I was listening to Joni Mitchell and her "Blue" album on YouTube as well as "Old Man" by Neil Young which always hits me like a ton of bricks emotionally as it reminds me of a departed loved one. But the 70's and 80's were when I really started to grow from a child into an adult and I love listening to Guns and Roses, Bon Jovi, Phil Collins and many more. But the "music" of today is superficial and even if I am trying to learn the words so that I can sing along it isn't deep and I only recall the words when I actually hear the first notes of the song when I listen again. It is quite meaningless, there are some exceptions like Adele's lyrics in her song writing style, but generally speaking I could never cry or mourn with today's mix of "noise", much of it computer generated. I believe that the days are long gone when you were able to listen to something like Beethoven's 9th or Claire de Lune, which I have been known to chop up vegetables while listening on repeat and feel the intensity or the peace from the notes of each song. Music, either yesterday's or today's, is personal and I think that's what makes it profound to each person, but it would be a boring world without it! Thanks for reading.

To a lot of people, it would never be classical music, while to others that was real music. Personally, I love music with substance, and how it makes me feel. Music is all about the emotions it makes your feel. It can rev you up to want to dance or bring you down to tears. Of course, there are a myriad of emotions in between. I enjoy music that makes me feel calm, happy and hopeful. Your taste in music also changes in life. At least mine has. Later in life, I appreciate music that brings me closer to God and feels my heart with love and hope for mankind. In my teens, it was all about fun and knowing all the lyrics. Now most music I don't understand the lyrics, and when I do, I am ashamed as where we have gone as a society. Actually, music with no lyrics can bring out the most emotions. That takes real skill on the part of the composer. There are so great composers out there, but they don't get the credit they deserve. It's all about who makes the music charts and has the most fans!

And singers from previous decades (like Sinatra) were still on the charts. There was something for everyone. I can honestly say that I have never heard anything by Taylor Swift. I listen to music that was popular when I was growing up, from the 70s,80s,90s. It never gets old.

I love my CD's and listen to them often. It is sad in my opinion how the music of today has changed. Just listen to what you like.

I have no idea what the words are to most of the music they play but many need to take lessons on how to play real music. The music of the 60's and 70's and ome of the 80's was the best music it had meaning, and new what they were playing about. I wish that some of the older music would come back. But sadly most of the older singers are gone now and all we have is the junk that I can not stand so I do not turn the tv or radio on. When it coes to music the U.S. lost many great singers forever and all the great music went down the tubes.

I like music from WW1 through to now albeit I think the 60's had the best music. I do not like rap as it is usually all swearing and anger and that is if you can understand it - not my cup of tea. I don't like all the music and agree a lot of it does not stand up but the classics do and a lot of the 60's stuff is still being played today. Enjoy what you like.
