What recipes were you most fond of while growing up?
Christina C 46645606-Nov-21 10:00 am
Who cooked your favourite recipes while you were growing up? You don't need to share the recipe though you can if you wish. Just the name and why you were so fond of it. Was it your grandma with her famous mint choc slice? Your Dad who was the noodle king? Mum who made the best ever cookies? Which foods gave you the best memories?

My Mother's chocolate meringue pie. Also her sloppy joes and baked beans and potato salad all of which I have the special recipes for. I liked the stuffed steak also.

Haggis, black pudding, stovies, macaroni cheese, rabbit. Maybe a pheasant bought at the pub quietly. Many offal dishes that are shunned now.

In post war Britain, we ate whatever was served and my Nan made the most of whatever was available. She spent hours slow cooking dishes such as 'Spotted Dick', 'Black Puddings' and 'Rissoles' which have my grandchildren gagging at the thought. I loved 'Spotted Dick' for special occasions - a steamed suet pudding with currants or raisins in it and served with thick home made custard.

That's a lot of elbow grease! I tried beating egg whites by hand for a pavlova once. Arms were really sore by the end of it. Result was yummy though :)

Mum's stovies and macaroni cheese. Can manage stovies but not macaroni cheese. Need Scottish red cheddar for that.

We always had family over so it was more to do with what they brought over. Rotten corn, crayfish, hangi, paua (abalone), kina (sea urchin) and wild pig. I was scared of Julia Child and her cleaver, but loved Hudson & Hall and Graham Kerr.

Yum! That reminds me a lot of family gatherings actually. Nan used to make a raw fish salad for gatherings and aunty sometimes would share a loaf of rewena bread. I love rewena bread! I should look for a recipe.

Rewana is a Maori version of sour dough really. And I make raw fish with coconut cream, etc every Christmas. Oh the calories!

My dad was the noodle king ^-^ He always made the best noodles. Us kids used to look at him with puppy dog eyes when he made them. Mum used to make the yummiest chocolate coffee Birthday cake (she was a chef) and our family members still request it to this day. Many fond memories :)

it was a combination of coffee and chocolate cake. Mum used to add an espresso shot in place of vanilla essence which complimented the chocolate flavours beautifully.
