Quit tobacco

Has any long term [20 years or more] smoker used vapes/e-cigarettes to stop using tobacco?
I have been smoking for 60 of my 70 years life, now the cost is getting prohibitive so am trying vapes, to some success but not totally.

  • Yes I switched from smoking to vapes and now I don''t even vape anymore.I quit smoking tobacco nearly 5 years ago and wouldn't of done it without the help of a vape.I quit the vape about 5 months ago.

      • after 60 years of putting shite into my body I am too scared to even try that. Not to mention those that stop one addiction seem to replace it with another even if the replacement is socially acceptable :)

    • Vapes just dont compare in my books. To cut the expense I buy duty free cigarettes which are approximately $10 cheaper. Your far better off if you can quit altogether but after trying most cessation products myself and having COPD I still havent managed to quit.

      • Trouble is to get duty free one has to travel from or into NZ. I have been trying different 'disposable' vapes, so far after trying approx 20 different ones have found 2 maybe's. I go for the tobacco one's trying to find similar 'flavour' to my normal tobacco Good luck with your COPD. Partner has it, he used champix to stop, but I wouldn't recommend- it is a mind altering drug

      • I dont know for how much longer but in Australia there is Vape Shops that sell the Duty Free smokes and cheaper tobacco. They have been in operation for over 12 months and appear in many suburbs and even rural areas. I dont understand the legalities I only know that it has kept the costs down for a lot of smokers me included.

wow, I am guessing this is "under the counter" as such. Wonder if it's safe to ask in NZ

      • they brazenly sell them (even the Police buy them) Strange I know.

    • I like smokers as they pay just sooooo much tax into our system. The more they smoke the more tax they pay. It is just a pity that our Health system has to look after them when they all fall down. I speak as a heavy ex smoker and regret the day I ever started but now I can celebrate the day I stopped some years ago. Two organs in your body never do or can heal themselves. One is your heart and the other are your lungs. Ummmmmm

      • People in America were dying from using vapes...I think about 30 in total....they were going to carry out a massive investigation and possibly ban vaping....but then covid hit us all and everyone seems to have forgotten about it...please do a big search online...the info will be there somewhere...I used nicotine gum AND patches at the same time, which you are not allowed to do...and found this worked fine for me... Massive over the top hits of nicotine totally removed my urge to smoke ...AND did not seem to be addictive either...which is interesting

        • From what I understand many of those vape deaths were because of what the people them selves added to the 'e-juice' Interesting no long term addiction, did you have stomach upsets while on the high nicotine?

no but sometimes my heart got a little workout! ...people say its the nicotine that is addictive...I think the other chemicals are to blame!

      • I'm a long term smoker and no plans on quitting .not a dr but I really think vapes are worse for you. I've never heard of getting lung infections as a teenager from cigarettes ... And lord knows what is in those mixtures, at least the tobacco industry is regulated .Yes.. yeah .I can hear all the emails coming in now... but plenty of people dying that r non smokers from lung problems. My grandmother a chain smoker, passed away aged 92 .Not from that either.... So enjoy and make your own cut backs if u can do it ! ;) best wishes

        • It is the cost that is making me think about cutting back. Am now down to 3 or 4 per day with vapes other times. NZ cheapest pack of 20 is $30. Ad they say they are going to restrict the number of places can buy next year down to bout 95 outlets for the whole country

same price here in Australia unfortunately. However we have yet to be forced into cut backs on outlets! That's harsh. Still the more places you seem to go ,the less smoking areas there are too. Good for the younger generations but then they are getting poisoned by these vapes and us old time smokers are getting ripped off and made to feel like lepers. No gross pictures of diseased livers or severe domestic violence warnings on alcohol labels tho. Just pretty labels and where would u like to sit ? Ironic .....?

I agree things are not good. Alcohol causes way more social issues than tobacco ever did. then we have the marijuana debate.....
