Eating Gluten Free in Restaurants

I have tried eating at restaurants that specify Gluten Free. I have Coeliac disease and am allergic to Wheat. Almost a week ago I went to a nearby Venue for dinner with friends. I ordered a Barramundi and veg. Gluten free. I was assured twice it was gluten free. Unfortunately in the early hours I experienced abdominal pains in my small and large intestine. Almost 6 days later and I am still in pain. Should there be a thorough investigation into Restaurants to make sure they are safely preparing the food not to cause harm to their patrons with this condition or would it be safer for those who suffer CD to not eat out?

    Cross contamination it's always a risk when eating out.

      That's just plain negligence to advertise your selection as gluten free and have it not turn out to be true. You could have had a worse reaction. Celiac disease can be very distressing if you provoke the symptoms with the wrong food. You must say something to the manager and make him comp you a truly gluten free meal. If not, leave a poor review on their website. But dont just let it go......

        I doubt they care. I may have an opportunity tomorrow with friends. Not sure yet. I need to cease eating out for dinner because no one can be trusted.

      Yes, from your experience I would say yes. Why dont u check in with your Department of Health.

          I don't really understand the current planet...in the 1970s through to the 1990s I worked in really busy kitchens all over the world...my job was to supply good food rapidly and make sure that everything was clean fresh and safe...nobody seemed to have unusual food requirements...nobody was allergic to food...nobody got sick nobody died...I fed hundreds (proably thousands) of people and they were happy...I would not want to work in any kitchen now...its a weird sad place.... I have sat down with young chefs and talked with them...they described my time in catering as "The Golden Years"....

            I agree, The meals were always presented with care and mostly enjoyable to eat. I have observed the quality not the same and not with passion we once had in this Country.

            My sister in law lives in Canberra and is coeliac. She brought down everything she wanted to eat and it does make it very difficult as a hostess. However, I understand. I am intolerant of soy, dairy fat and onions.I troll through every ingredient at Restaurants and there is nothing worse than to wake in the middle of the night with cramping pains and rushes to the toilet. In my early years I had none of this but culinary additives, including MSG - "CHICKEN SALT" to the uninitiated are now in even the simplest items such as tins of chopped tomatoes. The longer we rely on good from overseas, especially China, the worse this will be.

            I am not sure where you live but here in AUSTRALIA the law is part of the problem. Companies are allowed to label items "gluten free" if they only contain a VERY small amount of gluten. I think it is outrageous. It is probably not even the Restaurant's fault. I think there should be an investigation into it. Luckily I am not a Coeliac but I do have a problem with gluten.               Thank you for letting me know with regards to label items. I purchased gluten free biscuits from the health aisle and as soon as it touched my mouth my gut reacted. At least now I know I will be more careful. Thank you Janet

              Yes - apparently minute amounts are ok - but NOT if you are a Coeliac. Shocking.

            My sister is Coeliac when we go to a party she sometimes brings her own food or check the menu before we arrived at the restaurant so she knows what she wants.

              I once did that when going to a birthday party at a pizza restaurant. I brought my own but I did receive a sarcastic comment from a bloke at the party for not ordering. But it might be best to try to stop all restaurants as recommended onsite.

            Hi Suzy I totally sympathize with you because I am coeliac too and know exactly what you mean,the same thing happened to me just recently when I was told the pasta and the sauce was gluten free so assumed it was safe for me to eat but not the case after enduring hours and several days later of severe abdominal pain,diarrhoea,extreme tiredness and general feeling of being unwell.It really frustrates the hell out of me when we are told things are gluten free but I am pretty sure there is cross contamination going on in these places so I agree it is safer to eat at home unfortunately.

              I let them know and they informed me they will let the Chef know. For us it is best we make our own and take it along. I have had sarcastic comments for not ordering as they specify to me that there is gluten free. I have to explain to these people what has happened in the past when I did order. Unfortunately this is the fourth time the Chef got it wrong. I suspect my friend will ask me to go again this Sunday. I may go but order a cup of tea only. Just to sit and chat is enjoyable.

              Its a damn shame there isn't some sort of testing stick you could put in the food like a thermometer to check it was gluten free. Maybe one day..

              Hi Mary, Menu read GF but it was not. I need to say no more and cut restaurants out for life but it is hard. I want to go out with family and friends and sit and enjoy a meal with them. Eating at home is the safest for me.
