Amazon closing down BookDepository :-(
Andrew C 28719605-Apr-23 12:19 pm
Amazon bought BookDepository back in 2011, and now they are closing the online book store with last orders needing to be placed by 26 April.

Another once great source of books gets closed by a greedy corporate giant. Free shipping was great, the range was really good, the prices were good (cheaper than pretty much anywhere else). :-(

      • You can get vouchers from here for Mighty Ape (they do price matching, so if you see a book cheaper elsewhere they will usually try to match it) or Whitcoulls

        • Unfortunately they won't price match the soon-to-be-defunct BookDepository, who were always cheaper than MightyApe.

      • Isn't all this stuff available at a price on line? Do you really need a hard back copy? Trees will love Amazon

        • Reading on a screen is a horrible experience. Plus, if you use one of those idiotic "cloud"-only sites, they can remove any book (or game or movie) whenever they feel like it, even though you've already paid for it. And you can't have a bookshelf full of books to admire and reminisce. Then there's the "Politically Correct" morons going around re-editing everything - with a proper book you've still got the original version as the author intended it to be.

      • Please everybody, just do not deal with Amazon in any form. They are just like Hitler in the 1930's, trying to take over the world.

        • BookDepository was good because they sold only books. MightyApe got greedy and tries to sell almost everything. Amazon got even greedier and not only sells almost everything, but also acts as a marketplace, so you never know if your purchase is coming from Amazon or one of the many retailers who sell stuff their, nor if your not careful whether it's new or second-hand. TradeMe (NZ's version of eBay) has gone the same way. TheMarket is similarly greedy, although all their stuff comes from the various brands owned by The Warehouse parent company. There are NZ online bookstores like TheNile and Fishpond, but they're insanely over-priced compared to BookDepository or even MightyApe.

      • Oh wow, I didn't know that, I certainly found it a great range & low prices too & just a trusted, reliable site.
