In the days leading up to this Federal budget, I heard the media stating that the Pensioners are one of the biggest groups to benefit the MOST from this budget. I thought oh yea get your facts right... Upon listening to the budget, the announcement was that pensioners would be able to work and earn more before losing part of their pension payments (precisely what I thought it would be ). This only benefits a very SMALL percentage of pensioners who actually work, keeping in mind that there are many pensioners who cannot work due to health problems or disabilities, many who cannot get a job in their local area or due to age discrimination or they have too many responsibilities looking after a very sick partner. Many pensioners do not want to work but are pressured to work in order to survive due to the lousy pension payments, high costs of living, and medical costs. In reality, pensioners had worked for 50 years or more, paying their taxes, helping to grow the country etc, and therefore have the right to retire and enjoy life in their remaining years and should NOT have to work until the day they die just to be able to afford to survive. A lot of people who have not yet retired, including the government, believe that pensioners are a burden on the government's budgets BUT these pensioners did their fair share of work and paid taxes for over 50 years AND continue paying taxes through GST on goods and services, including airport tax when they travel PLUS through council rates whether they rent or own their home |
