Is the latest windows feature update causing you issues?
Katzeye01-Oct-20 10:46 am
So over the weekend my laptop decided it was time for a windows update and silly me started the update,4 friggin hours later!!! and it was still not finished so I perservered and let the update continue for around another hour or so including installing time.My laptop needed a restart so away I go thinking everything is going to run smoothly after the reboot but how wrong I was.Loading windows was a complete nightmare and nothing could be accessed from my apps, just kept closing. It took forever to load a page and I have fast fibre internet and even shutting down it would just go into hibernation mode then take 5-10 minutes to fully shut down.I did a google search on these latest updates as there was two of them and yes many others have had the same issue.I tried to uninstall these updates but Microsoft overided that until finally I found a way to stop them in my settings.I am still having slow loading and shutting down issues though.

  • yes, dont install new windows update. Too many issues. Wait at least one month until they fix it

    • Here's hoping they have come out with a fix for it by then.No I managed to stop the install.

    • you can create a restore point with windows - when windows (on your computer starts acting up (or is out) - go to the restore point when windows on computer was operating fine - just a thought - in addition - create a recovery disk of windows 10 - just a thought - and you can set wndows to update automatic or you have to do update (manual) - me I became friends with a computer geek

    • Yes I did turn updates off but somehow Microsoft bypassed it and started the update.I have sorted it now though.

  • Windows updates are normally very reliable and very solid. Unfortunately Murphy is always around and can sometimes intervene - Murphy's Law! It would seem that your system is fairly old given the time that the update took. The May update was the big one but that was delayed for most people and it would seem that was the one that caused trouble. I would suggest you do a system restore to restore your system to how it was - takes a while but it should fix your problems.

    • My laptop is only 2 years old but I suppose it could be classed as being old now.Last night it starting fixing a driver issue so I have no idea what is going on now.I think I tried a system restore but was unsuccessful so maybe I did not go back far enough.

    • Hi Annette, It's obviously very difficult trying to diagnose problems from a distance. I guess I should have said - how your system is configured rather than suggesting that it may have been old. Two years is definitely not old these days. As I said, the delayed May update was a big one but it shouldn't have taken as long as you suggest. I obviously have no idea what is on your system but it could be that there is something installed there that is slowing things down. You can refresh Windows but to do it successfully means having to install everything again. I wouldn't recommend the option where you leave all programs and just rebuild the Windows part as it could very well be one of the third party programs that is the culprit. There is wealth of information on the web about how to go about these things.

Could be my antivirus Trend which is the only other big installed program.Other than that it's all microsoft stuff. My laptop is HP so could even be a failed update with them.I have a mate who is going to check it out for me because the slow start up is still continuing and there is high CPU from something running on my device.

    • Getting a knowledgeable person to look at it is certainly your best bet. Your Trend Micro anti virus could most certainly be the hassle. It's not one of my favorite anti virus programs. I actually reckon Microsoft Defender built into Windows gives more than enough protection for anybody. It's free - obviously, works pretty well and doesn't hog system resources.

The dude at Noel Leemings insisted it was the best out there but ofcourse he was only trying to make more as an add on after I forked out $800 for the laptop.I might end my subscription and look at just using windows defender now. Thanks for this.

  • Updates are always a worry..what are those monkeys doing to your computer... it works fine but they want to "fix it"...windows or mac, there they are, busily "improving" things .... just don't update anything that is working fine, they all used to release Beta versions so that enthusiasts could test them out ...now they just force feed you the beta as a finished product...why not? ...no-one is stopping them...we are users ...not customers....
