How much do we know about Rheumatic Fever | ||

On the 12th of July 2023 I had open heart surgery for a complete heart valve replacement & one in need of repair, I kept waking up struggling to breath due to a leak which built up 20 kilos of fluid on my lungs...drowning on the inside, very scary. According to the surgeon, sometime in my life, between the age of 5 & 15, I had developed Rheumatic Fever, which can damage your heart. I do not know much about my medical history as a child, but what concerns me the most, is up until my surgery I had no knowledge of what this condition does to your heart. Why is this medical condition not more knowledgeable & made more aware of to parents of young children if or when they develop a sore throat. I urge parents, grandparents & care givers of children aged between 5 & 15 to be tested for this condition at the first sign of a sore throat & muscle aches, it could be more serious than just the flu. |
