| Seeing as there is a discussion on the word "woke", I thought I would throw my husband's pet hate, the misunderstanding of the word "decimate". Is he correct or not. It is often used to indicate, "to kill a large number of something, or to reduce something severely eg populations of endangered animals have been decimated". Perhaps the word has evolved but the true meaning comes from the word decimal which is based on the number 10. In Roman times it meant, to kill every tenth person, a punishment used in the Roman army for mutinous . |
