Cyclone in North Island NZ
mary c17-Feb-23 05:52 pm
Just checking in to see that all is well with people on here who are in the North or have family/friends in the regions hit by the cyclone. Thinking of everyone- just so sad for those who have lost their lives, their families, whanau. And for all those with homes, businesses etc lost or severely damaged. xox

That's very kind of you Mary thinking of those affected by the cyclone here in NZ luckily I live in the South Island where we were perfectly fine but it sure has brought back vivid memories of our own natural disaster here in Christchurch years ago so the entire NZ is feeling for those in the North :(

oh yes Annette..Chch will always be before and after. I remember distinctly where i was when i heard hubby's rellie Jamie had died- in the CBD- hubby's neice got out of the bar they managed and her step bro' right behind her but he got hit by overhead concrete. It was beyond belief seeing the aftermath on tv. My big sis still traumatized- she worked in a school science Lab at Aranui high school- all the glass crashed around her. I wish i was down there to go to the Concert that Neil Finn has organized for the Cyclone..

I am so sorry you lost a family member during our quakes over here.I knew one person that died in the CTV building where most of the deaths occured sadly, she was the mother of my eldest sons best friends so it was very sad.I used to go to Aranui High lol but it's called something else now but don't ask me what. The tickets to that concert sold out within 6 hours and we missed out which was a shame because we wanted to go so much to show our support,it was a really good line up.

oh the CTV disaster was incredibly tragic...just so sad, and how awful for your son's best friend. It still seems unreal that our hometown was hit like that- it just seemed so unlikely- i never remember many quakes there growing up. Its the last place here in NZ i would have thought it would happen to. Oh i didn't know Aranui had been renamed? Bit of a co-incidence eh of all the schools hehe. I went to Villa Maria- such a good Saintly girl i was haha. I heard the concert raised alot of money- that is great- sorry you missed going xx

I remember a very small shake back when my eldest son was only 15 months old (he's 29 now) but it was nothing too worry about but never imagined we would cop it many years later, always thought it would be Wellington. We have been getting quite a few shakes here in NZ lately but touch wood they don't increase in size or are shallow. They did well with the concert which was so good to hear,I think it was like $200,000,yeah pretty gutted we didn't get to go but oh well these things happen Xx

That is so good that money was raised. I was reading that people whose homes are red stickered- which means they can't go back to them? still have to pay rates! man that seems so unfair eh. Hubby's mum lived on New Brighton rd in a red zoned area back in 2011..she moved up to wellington.Gawd where is safe to live now?!

Thanks for your show of concern and kindness Mary. I live in the waitakere’s in Auckland, we count our blessings that we are safe, and our families through the country are safe, it sure was a traumatising experience for us all; keeping our homes from flooding, cleaning up after the cyclone carnage to our community, slips, fractured roads, fallen tree’s! We were without power and internet for 5 days and sometimes water. Our hearts go out to the volunteers who lost their lives trying to rescue people and their homes, the lost animals, livelihoods. New Zealand is a small country with a big heart, we’re resilient and we will recover, blessings

Thankyou Mary for checking up on people through Aotearoa. I live in Whangarei and we did have heavy rain and the wind was very bad fast and loud. At my place there was damage to the trees and the rain was not as heavy as on the other side of Hatea Drive. I did need to shut windows and the likes. My little dog was buzy coming in for a towel dry so that was some fun.

climate change it might be but the Tonga volcanic eruption also played a part. Krakatoa did the same in the late 1800s

We only had a foot of water through our Garage and Hallway ( in Auckland) and so I think we escaped when one sees it was upto the roofs of many of the houses on the East Coast. We are good at managing and handling sand bags now. Never thought we would have to have that skill.

So true- just finding it hard to believe and looking at parts of the Hawkes Bay..was it not meant to hit there so hard? It seemed like things were less prepared for there.
