Always bad news on Media

Why is it now that we are inundated with images on TV that is so distressing. This is not good for young children to be seeing constantly and must play on their minds. What are your thoughts?

  • Good news doesn't sell as well as bad. Bad news sells, always does, always will. Don't think young kids really comprehend the news. Can't keep kids blind for ever. there is a switch that says off on the television. You are in control of what you want them to see. Can't see the problem.

    • Watching the News was part of growing up and learning when I was a kid.

      • Same here.

    • Television news started going down the toilet when it stopped being a program...and suddenly became a "show".... it is supposed to be information...not entertainment....or a circus... It has to be grim...because extensive research clearly shows that that is what people expect and actually want....any attempt at "Good News News" ALWAYS fails and gets no viewers....that is the human condition sadly.... helpless to help...maybe you can vent a bit of anger.....but just glad it is not you... not happy with your life?....hey just look at all these people...realise how lucky you are....that kind of thing...sad but true....

      • I've never heard of any young children who are interested in watching the TV news (I certainly never did when I was little), so it is probably an irrelevant question.

        • The TV News shows often try to end on a "feel good" story, which they purposely tease before the ad breaks so that people will stay around to watch it.

          • Violence is what, at the moment, SELLS. So long as the Media Moguls are making truck/lorry Loads of Money they simply don't care what effect their productions may be having on people - young or old. As Gunter L says, most kids today have access to mbile phones, they see the Videos of the Wars, be they created by our politicians or those politicians we like to call Terrorists. There is nothing to choose between the two. We are also told that children can, and do, at the tap of a finger, whether their parents like it or not, access violent pornography any time they want to. Have a look at current TV shows put on by the Commercials and, in Australia, The Australian Broadcasting Commission and, in particular SBS, advertisements repeated ad infinitum for their Series and Films all promoting endless Violence. Adults are becoming inured to the Violence and Children are growing up to believe that Violence, Hatred, Murder, Cruelty are all the norm. Every time there is one of those mass shootings in one of the Most dangerous Countries on Earth, The United States of America, thw Media spends untold hours showing it again and again and talkiing about it endlessly. There probably is lots of good things going on but, at present, news about them does not sell papers, attract people to TV News and the Internet.

            • All the families that I know, whether it be family or just acquaintances, barely have their televisions on and they certainly do not watch news programs. If I had a young family I think I would be doing the same.

              • The world is a very dangerous place there are leaders hell bent on power corrupt Putin Xi the fat guy in North Korea and their Iranian mate. The axis of evil. They murder and inprison with impunity and without just cause. In the old days in your face videos of the horrors by these perpetrators would never be seen the technology wasn't there. Nowadays mobile phones cameras and so forth can beam stuff across the world in seconds It's inevitable children will see this one way or the other. The only way to protect their innocence is to explain it away as best as possible and although they will be affected you must reassure them that you are there to protect them from the evil that exists.
